Effects of restraint and immobilization on electrosensory behaviors of weakly electric fish.

Weakly electric fishes have been an important model system in behavioral neuroscience for more than 40 years. These fishes use a specialized electric organ to produce an electric field that is typically below 1 volt/cm and serves in many behaviors including social communication and prey detection. Electrical behaviors are easy to study because inexpensive and widely available tools enable continuous monitoring of the electric field of individual or groups of interacting fish. Weakly electric fish have been routinely used in tightly controlled neurophysiological experiments in which the animal

Microbial communities and inflammatory response in the endometrium differ between normal and metritic dairy cows at 5-10 days post-partum.

Post-partum metritis is among the most prevalent disease in dairy cows affecting animal welfare and inflicting considerable economic loses. While post-partum contamination of the uterus is rife in dairy cows, only a fraction of these animals will develop metritis. Our main objective was to compare the bacterial communities and the inflammatory response in the endometrium of healthy and metritic dairy cows. Holstein-Friesian cows (n = 35) were sampled immediately following clinical classification as healthy (n = 21), suffering from metritis (n = 13) or septic metritis (n = 1), based on veterina

[Use of original plant communities as indicators for the occurrence of common ticks].

In an investigation conducted in the South and West Bohemian region the author paid attention to the incidence of the tick Ixodes ricinus and foci of tick-borne encephalitis in original plant communities. In Southern Bohemia in places of original communities of acidophil oak forests, oak-hornbeam woods and their mosaic combinations as well as combinations of flowers and beech forests and meadows and alder trees the author detected 93.5% of the breeding places of ticks. In Western Bohemia in original oak forests there were 97.2% breeding places of Ixodes ricinus. In other original plant communi

Common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis Linnaeus, 1758): food and medicine for people in the Amazon.

BACKGROUND: In the Amazon rainforest, biodiversity is a significant resource for traditional communities, as it can be used as a relevant source of protein and it has a promising zootherapeutic potential. Studies on knowledge and ways how local peoples use the fauna are still incipient. This paper presents both the knowledge on and food and medicinal uses of common opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) by riverine communities in an Amazon floodplain region. METHODS: The study was conducted with riverine communities in the municipality of Abaetetuba, Pará, Brazil. The main methods used were structur

"When a dog bites someone": Community and service provider dynamics influencing access to integrated bite case management in Chad.

This study aims to identify factors on the community, the human health and the animal health provider level that determine access to Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and animal rabies diagnosis in the light of a future integrated bite case management (IBCM) approach for rabies control in Chad. The study was embedded in an overall project conducted from 2016 to 2018, to determine rabies burden and vaccine demand in West and Central Africa. Data collection took place during the projects closing workshops with stakeholders organized between August and September 2018 in the three study zones in Cha

Characterization and Comparison of Microbiota in the Gastrointestinal Tracts of the Goat (Capra hircus) During Preweaning Development.

Bacterial communities in gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) play an important role in animal health and performance. Despite its importance, little information is available on the establishment of microbial populations in the goat GIT or on changes occurring during early development. Therefore, this study investigated the bacterial community dynamics of the rumen, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colon in 15 goats at five developmental stages (0, 14, 28, 42, and 56 days old) by using 16S rDNA sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR technology. 940 genera were found to belong to 44 phyla distr

Evidence supporting an altered immune response in ASD.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by deficits in social interactions, communication, and increased stereotypical repetitive behaviors. The immune system plays an important role in neurodevelopment, regulating neuronal proliferation, synapse formation and plasticity, as well as removing apoptotic neurons. Immune dysfunction in ASD has been repeatedly described by many research groups across the globe. Symptoms of immune dysfunction in ASD include neuroinflammation, presence of autoantibodies, increased T cell responses, and enhanced innate NK cell an

Assessing multiple foodborne, waterborne and environmental exposures of healthy people to potential enteric pathogen sources: effect of age, gender, season, and recall period.

Information is lacking in Canada on the frequency of exposures of healthy people to enteric pathogen sources (i.e. water, food, animal contact) at the community level. This information is critical to develop more robust risk assessments and prioritize control measures. A 12-month-long cross-sectional telephone survey of 1200 healthy individuals in a sentinel community was performed. Survey respondents were divided into three recall period groups (3, 7, 14 days). The occurrence of 46 exposures (including water, animal contact, environmental contact and high-risk foods) was assessed per recall p

Use of anesthetic agents in neonates and young children.

BACKGROUND: Some drugs used for sedation and anesthesia produce histopathologic central nervous system changes in juvenile animal models. These observations have raised concerns regarding the use of these drugs in pediatric patients. We summarized the findings in developing animals and describe the steps that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and others are taking to assess potential risks in pediatric patients. The FDA views this communication as opening a dialog with the anesthesia community to address this issue. METHODS: We reviewed the available animal studies literature examining t

Colour scales with climate in North American ratsnakes: a test of the thermal melanism hypothesis using community science images.

Animal colour is a complex trait shaped by multiple selection pressures that can vary across geography. The thermal melanism hypothesis predicts that darker coloration is beneficial to animals in colder regions because it allows for more rapid solar absorption. Here, we use community science images of three closely related species of North American ratsnakes (genus Pantherophis) to examine if climate predicts colour variation across range-wide scales. We predicted that darker individuals are found in colder regions and higher elevations, in accordance with the thermal melanism hypothesis. Usin

Possible Dissemination of a Panton-Valentine Leukocidin-Positive Livestock-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus CC398 Clone in Tokyo, Japan.

In the last decade, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been identified in livestock animals, such as swine, poultry, and veal calves, and has been termed livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA). LA-MRSA sequence type (ST) 398 strains can effectively infect and colonize humans, with subsequent human-to-human transmission in both community and hospital settings. Unlike other countries, LA-MRSA had not been reported in Japanese patients until 2019. However, we recently reported a case of intractable arthritis caused by an LA-MRSA CC398 (ST1232) clone, which is a single-locus varia

Cerebral low-density lipoprotein (LDL) uptake is stimulated by acute bile drainage.

Although the cholesterol pool in the central nervous system is considered to be relatively stable, few studies have tested this assumption. The aim of the study was to gain further information on the communication between the extracerebral organs and the brain as far as cholesterol and lipoprotein transport are concerned. Receptor-dependent as well as receptor-independent LDL uptake in the brain were measured, by established methods, after constant 1-h intravenous infusions of [14C]sucrose-labelled hamster LDL and methylated human LDL, both in hamsters with an acute bile fistula and in control

Confronting the barriers to develop novel vaccines against brucellosis.

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease of nearly worldwide distribution. This pathogen causes abortion in domestic animals and undulant fever, arthritis, endocarditis and meningitis in humans. Currently, there is no vaccine licensed for brucellosis in humans. Furthermore, control of brucellosis in the human population relies on the control of animal disease. Available animal vaccines may cause disease and in some cases have limited efficacy. This article discusses recent studies in the development of recombinant protein, DNA and live-attenuated vaccines against brucellosis. Furthermore,

Immunobiology of the serous cavities.

The serous cavities are fluid-filled spaces that surround the lung, heart, and abdomen. One of their main functions is to provide protection and lubrication for their encapsulated organs. In addition to these physiological roles, the serous cavities are rich immune cell reservoirs. Although these cavity-derived immune cells have been studied ex vivo for many years, the past decade has led to substantial advances in serous cavity biology. Importantly, immune mechanisms that occur in these fluid environments and communication networks between these cavities and the tissues that they contain have

Lipid nanotubes unmask neutrophils for complement attack.

Neutrophils, critical components of innate immunity, undergo significant morphological changes during phagocytosis. In this study, we demonstrate that neutrophils exposed to shear stress generate lipid nanotubes (NTs) with a unique composition. Compared with the proteome of whole neutrophils, NTs notably lack cytoskeletal elements and the complement-inhibiting transmembrane protein CD46. Consequently, these NTs are recognized by the complement system and selectively opsonized the complement component C3b. Biophysical characterization of NTs confirmed that their integrity relies on lipid-lipid

Building trust before the next crisis: lessons from the avian influenza front lines.

The United States H5N1 outbreak which began in 2022 had widespread human health, animal health, and economic impacts. This outbreak led to the death or depopulation of over 175 million domestic birds and marked the first time that a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in cattle. Response to this emergency required coordination among various stakeholders in public health and agriculture sectors at federal, state, and local levels. Despite national and local efforts, a lack of trust between stakeholders diminished the efficiency of the response. The National Academies of

The role of microbial genomics in delivering the UK's national action plan for confronting antimicrobial resistance 2024-29.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to human and animal health, in addition to environmental resilience. Countries set the agenda on their national action against AMR in the form of National Action Plans (NAPs), with the UK's latest NAP released in May, 2024. Advances in genomics have strengthened our ability to work towards NAP priorities; however, to date, no mapping of the role genomics plays in contributing to specific goals within the NAP has been undertaken. The UK Research and Innovation-funded Transdisciplinary Antimicrobial Resistance Genomics Network brought together a r
