Opioid poisoning is a frequent cause of death in drug addicts and occurs with opioid treatment. Quetiapine is often found in forensic autopsies and may increase the risk of fatal opioid poisoning by enhancing sedation, respiratory depression, hypotension and QT prolongation. We systematically searched for studies of acute toxicity of quetiapine or other antipsychotics combined with morphine or methadone. Case reports describing toxicity of quetiapine combined with morphine or methadone were also included. We retrieved one human study that observed pharmacokinetic interaction between quetiapine

Staphylococcus aureus represents an organism of striking versatility. While asymptomatic nasal colonization is widespread, it can also cause serious infections, toxinoses and life-threatening illnesses in humans and animals. Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP), one of the most prevalent causes of foodborne intoxication worldwide, results from oral intake of staphylococcal enterotoxins leading to violent vomiting, diarrhea and cramps shortly upon ingestion. The aim of the present study was to compare isolates associated with SFP to isolates collected from cases of human nasal colonization and c

The use of pesticides has rapidly increased in Japan since the end of World War II, significantly reducing work burdens and boosting food production. In the meantime, pesticides, responsible for poisoning and environmental pollution, have for many years posed grave issues that have had to be tackled by scientists of rural medicine for a long period. The Japanese Association of Rural Medicine, founded by the late Toshikazu Wakatsuki, has grappled with those issues for many years. Above all, the association has fulfilled its social obligations, such as by bringing the toxicity of organic mercury

Fifteen yearling steers were used to study the preventive effect of vitamin E on the protection against free radicals produced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The animals were randomly divided in three equal groups and treated as follows: group A--previously injected (i.m.) with 15 IU/kg BW on the 15th and second day before the trial and drenched with 0.05 ml/kg BW CCl4; group B--only drenched with the same dose of CCl4; group C--drenched with a placebo. Food intake was recorded and blood samples collected daily for 8 days after the CCl4 drenching to compare the activity of aspartate aminotran

The antidotal action of atropine sulfate and 2-pyridine aldoxime methiodide (2-PAM) against poisoning attributable to the new procarbamate insecticide benfuracarb [(ethyl N-[2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethylbenzofuran-7-yloxycarbonyl (methyl) aminothio]-N-isopropyl-beta-alaninate] was compared utilizing rats as our experimental model. Both the intraperitoneal and oral administrations of these antidotes were examined after five, ten, fifteen and thirty minutes exposure periods, following treatment with benfuracarb at dose levels approximating LD50 and LD100. The results obtained demonstrate that both th

Human porphyrias are rare inborn disorders of porphyrin metabolism. Porphyria cutanea tarda is one such disorder, which may occur spontaneously after the ingestion of drugs and alcohol. This is the "constitutional" type and is associated with a deficiency of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase in the liver. This constitutional type must be differentiated from the "acquired" type, which occurred in hundreds of people poisoned by hexachlorobenzene in Turkey. Morphological changes observed in the livers of animals and humans vary greatly. Porphyria cutanea tarda may be associated with very little live

To study under standardized experimental conditions the effect of a CO2-induced hyperventilation therapy on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) levels following acute CCl4 poisoning, rats received 2.5 ml CCl4/kg BW by gastric intubation and were subsequently either treated by CO2-induced hyperventilation or kept in an atmosphere containing air. Peak levels of CCl4 were observed in the fat, liver and blood 3-6 h after the intoxication and were found to be considerably lower in animals treated by CO2-induced hyperventilation compared to their respective controls. These data therefore strongly support th

Botulism is a neuroparalytic disease caused by exposure to botulinum neurotoxins produced by anaerobic spore-forming bacteria of the genus Clostridium. This disease occurs in both humans and wild and domestic animals, and is currently becoming an increasingly serious problem worldwide due to high animal mortality and economic losses. The clinical signs observed during the progression of botulism are nonspecific and difficult to unequivocally associate with this disease entity. The aim of this study is to present laboratory diagnostics of suspected botulism cases reported in Poland in 2022-2024

This article shows the isolated and combined effects of pesticides on animals. It is known that depending on the dose and duration of exposure to various xenobiotics, the same substances, different effects can occur in the body. At the same time, the main types of combined action include the effects of summation or additive action, potentiation or synergism, as well as antagonism. From here, there may be direct or indirect disorders in humans and animals. Of great interest is the neurotoxic effect of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, a representative of which is sumi-alpha. They have been sho

Clostridium perfringens uses its large arsenal of protein toxins to produce histotoxic, neurologic and intestinal infections in humans and animals. The major toxins involved in diseases are alpha (CPA), beta (CPB), epsilon (ETX), iota (ITX), enterotoxin (CPE), and necrotic B-like (NetB) toxins. CPA is the main virulence factor involved in gas gangrene in humans, whereas its role in animal diseases is limited and controversial. CPB is responsible for necrotizing enteritis and enterotoxemia, mostly in neonatal individuals of many animal species, including humans. ETX is the main toxin involved i

The central nervous system's extrapyramidal system provides involuntary motor control to the muscles of the head, neck, and limbs. Toxicants that affect the extrapyramidal system are generally clinically characterized by impaired motor control, which is usually the result of basal ganglionic dysfunction. A variety of extrapyramidal syndromes are recognized in humans and include Parkinson's disease, secondary parkinsonism, other degenerative diseases of the basal ganglia, and clinical syndromes that result in dystonia, dyskinesia, essential tremor, and other forms of tremor and chorea. Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most significant public health hazards. The clinical findings in the victims of the Japanese and Iraqi outbreaks have disclosed the pronounced susceptibility of the developing brain to MeHg poisoning. This notion has triggered worldwide scientific attention toward the long-term consequences of prenatal exposure on child development in communities with chronic low level dietary exposure. MeHg neurodevelopmental effects have been extensively investigated in laboratory animals under well-controlled exposure conditions. This article provides an updated overview o

Metals are a component of a variety of ecosystems and organisms. They can generally be divided into essential and nonessential metals. The essential metals are involved in physiological processes once the deficiency of these metals has been associated with diseases. Although iron, manganese, copper, and zinc are important for life, it has been evidenced that they are also involved in neuronal damage in many neurodegenerative disorders. Nonessential metals, which are metals without physiological functions, are present in trace or higher levels in living organisms. Occupational, environmental, o

The ways in which animals sense the world changes throughout development. For example, young of many species have limited visual capabilities, but still make social decisions, likely based on information gathered through other sensory modalities. Poison frog tadpoles display complex social behaviors that have been suggested to rely on vision despite a century of research indicating tadpoles have poorly-developed visual systems relative to adults. Alternatively, other sensory modalities, such as the lateral line system, are functional at hatching in frogs and may guide social decisions while ot

The clinic table of serious scorpionic envenimation is dominated by cardiovascular and pulmonary perturbations. The physiopathology of cardiac failure in man as well as at animal is again badly elucidated. The aim of our study has consisted in evaluating the hemodynamic variations of the Rat poisoned by the venom of the Buthus occitanus scorpion and to contribute through the analyse of plasmatic concentrations of catecholamines and by an histomorphometric study of muscular microcirculation to explain the mechanism of the hemodynamic perturbations and cardiac failure. 51 rats corresponding to 9

RATIONALE: Succinylcholine has been increasingly used in the theft of animals. Because of the presence of residual levels of succinylcholine in poisoned animals, it is harmful for people to eat foods derived from these animals. Therefore, a method should be immediately established to determine succinylcholine and its metabolite in animal-derived foods.
METHODS: A fast, highly sensitive method, combining solid-phase extraction (SPE) with ultra-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/ESI-MS/MS), was developed for the determination of succinylchol

BACKGROUND: Workers can be injured by animals such as mammals and insects. Previous studies found that most animal-related occupational fatalities were caused by horses and cattle. We analyzed characteristics of recent nonfatal severe animal-related injuries in US workers.
METHODS: The severe injury reports (SIR) database, collected by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, contains employer self-reports of inpatient hospitalizations and amputations. We used 2015-2021 SIR data to assess properties of animal-related injuries, including the type of animal involved, the nature of the

Relative susceptibility to fluoride (F) toxicosis in the form of osteo-dental fluorosis was observed in an observational survey of 2,747 mature and 887 immature domestic animals of diverse species living in areas with naturally fluoridated (>1.5 ppm F) drinking water. These animals included buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis), cattle (Bos taurus), camels (Camelus dromedarius), donkeys (Equus asinus), horses (Equus caballus), goats (Capra hircus), and sheep (Ovis aries). Of these mature and immature animals, 899 (32.7 %) and 322 (36.3 %) showed evidence of dental fluorosis with varying grades, respecti

Rabies is a public health problem of significant importance in the majority of Southern and Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. In some of these countries, there is a considerable death rate due to rabies. Dogs are the main source of human infection, while cats constitute the second most important group of domestic animals followed by cattle, sheep, goats, camels, donkeys and then wild animals. There are around 300 reported human cases in these regions annually, with several hundred thousand post-exposure treatments. Laboratory confirmation of rabies cases is not always perform

The binding of carbon disulphide sulphur was studied in the spinal cord and its axons of four control and four phenobarbitone pretreated adult rats 3 and 6 h after an intraperitoneal injection of 650 mumol of CS2 in olive oil. The binding of CS2 carbon was measured in the same fractions of two adult control rats 4.5 h after a similar administration of 1.3 mumol of the compound for reference. The specific binding of sulphur was highest in the axons of control animals 3 h after the injection while binding was 17.5% smaller in the axons of phenobarbitone treated animals. The uptake of sulphur was
