A 2-month-old kitten exhibited simultaneously an imperforate anus, hypospadias, rectourethral fistula and genital dysgenesis (penis restricted to the glans, absence of prepuce and bifid scrotum). Surgical correction consisted of separation of the urinary and digestive tracts, perineal urethrostomy and connection of the rectum to the newly made anal opening. Pathological examination of the testes, conventionally removed at 9 months of age, showed no mature spermatozoa and underdevelopment of germ and Leydig cells. In humans, the absence of an anal opening in association with abnormal sexual dev

We present a case of triple gut atresias (foregut, midgut and hindgut) with multiple congenital anomalies presenting as imperforate anus. Abdominal radiography showed the double bubble sign. Upper gastrointestinal study through a nasogastric tube confirmed duodenal obstruction. Exploratory laparotomy, duodeno-duodenostomy for duodenal atresia and a left descending colostomy for anorectal malformation were performed. During extubation, the nasogastric tube came out and could not be reinserted by the anaesthetic team under laryngoscopic guidance. A chest radiograph showed the tube curled in the

Tetrasomy 18p, one of the most commonly observed isochromosomes, consists of two copies of the p arms on chromosome 18[i(18p)]. It is known as a de novo occurrence of non-disjunction or centromeric mis-division during meiosis II in the vast majority of cases. It has a prevalence of 1/140,000-180,000 live births and affects both genders equally. A 28-year-old woman was referred at 33+2 weeks gestation to rule out fetal congenital heart disease. Her prenatal ultrasonography showed intrauterine growth retardation, cardiomegaly, and imperforate anus. Doppler ultrasonographic finding showed fetal a

Autosomal dominant Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is characterized by imperforate anus, triphalangeal and supernumerary thumbs, dysplastic ears and sensorineural hearing loss, and may also involve other organ systems. Strong inter- and intrafamiliar variability is known. Approximately 50% of TBS cases are sporadic and due to de novo mutations in the SALL1 gene. SALL1 encodes a zinc finger protein operating as a transcriptional repressor and localizing to pericentromeric heterochromatin. We traced the parental origin of SALL1 mutations in sporadic TBS by analysis of linkage between SALL1 mutation

The association between congenital duodenal obstruction and concomitant choledochal cyst has not been reported, although duodenal obstruction is known to be associated with many other anomalies. The authors describe 2 patients with choledochal cyst with duodenal obstruction. In 1 patient, a diverticulum type of choledochal cyst was found within an annular pancreas. Cyst excision, choledochojejunostomy, and side-to-side duodeno-duodenostomy were performed. The other patient showed separated duodenal atresia and other multiple anomalies including imperforate anus. A choledochal cyst was noted at

Intrathoracic kidney is a very rare congenital anomaly with only about 50 cases reported in the world literature. Incidence of intrathoracic kidney with Bochdalek hernias was reported to be less than 0.25 percent. The relationship between them remains uncertain. We report a case in which the patient had a normal chest x-ray at birth, but at the age of 5 months an isolated left sided intrathoracic kidney with incomplete duplication was discovered. This was followed by ipsilateral diaphragmatic hernia at the age of nine months. Other coexisting malformations included hydrocephalus and an imperfo

The experience with 211 cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction in Lagos, Nigeria, is described in an attempt to define the pattern in a developing country. Some of the major differences from the established pattern in the West include absence of meconium ileus and the relatively low prevalence of duodenal atresia which accounted for 8 per cent of bowel obstruction. Jejuno-ileal atresia and Hirschprung's disease constituted 21 and 14 per cent, respectively. Imperforate anus, as in the West, was the commonest, occurring in 38 per cent. Although neonatal intestinal obstruction was seen througho

A prospective study was carried out to compare the effectiveness of 4 commonly employed methods of bowel preparation before colorectal surgery: mechanical, mechanical with an antibiotic against aerobes (neomycin), mechanical with another antibiotic against anaerobes (metronidazole), and finally mechanical with a combination of neomycin and metronidazole. The use of mechanical preparation as the sole method was discontinued half-way through the study for ethical reasons. 53 bowel preparations were carried out on 31 patients, 7 adults and 24 children with mainly Hirschsprung's disease and imperf

Microdeletion of 16q12 is a rare chromosomal abnormality. We present the cases of two Japanese patients with developmental and renal symptoms of differing clinical severity. Both patients had 16q12 interstitial microdeletions that included the entire SALL1 gene. Patient 1 was a 15-year-old Japanese boy clinically diagnosed with branchio-oto-renal syndrome with mild developmental delay, but with no imperforate anus or polydactyly. Array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH) indicated a 5.2 Mb deletion in 16q12, which included SALL1. Patient 2 was a 13-year-old Japanese boy diagnosed with Town

We describe a novel autosomal recessive malformation syndrome in four related individuals from a geographically isolated Native Alaskan community, who have facial defects similar to those of individuals with Treacher Collins (TCS) and Miller syndrome. Distinctive findings include malar and mandibular hypoplasia, lower eyelid coloboma, choanal atresia, orofacial clefting, and external ear malformation with preauricular tags. Intellect is normal and profound mixed hearing loss has been observed in affected adults. Variable extracranial findings include atrioseptal defect, renal dysplasia, and im

Fourteen infants and children, 6 males & 8 females, with lipomyelomeningoceles were reviewed from October 1982 to December 1991 at Taichung Veterans General Hospital. The age at diagnosis ranged from 3 days to 5 years. The chief problems included mass on the back, urinary distention, weakness of lower limbs and poor bowel control. The cutaneous lesions over the lumbosacral region were subcutaneous lipoma, dimples and hemangioma. There were several associated anomalies, such as occult spina bifida, syringomyelia, sacrococcygeal dysgenesis, high-types imperforate anus, genitourinary anomalies, c

This report analyzes the course of 146 pediatric patients with colostomies in reference to problems with colostomy formation, management, and subsequent closure. Colostomy was performed predominantly for Hirschsprung's disease (70 cases) and imperforate anus (46 cases). A transverse colostomy was done in 120 patients (82%), and a sigmoid colostomy in the remaining patients. Loop colostomies were five times more frequent than divided colostomies. Early major complications occurred in 24 patients (16%). Stomal complications occurred in 69 patients and were more frequent after loop colostomies. C

BACKGROUND: Diphallus, also known as penile duplication, is a rare malformation, seen once in every 5 to 6 million births. Newborns showing this condition present higher mortality rates due to malformations and infections. The underlying etiology of this malformation is uncertain, but it is thought to be associated with trauma, drug use, or infections that may affect fetal the mesoderm between the 23rd and 25th day of pregnancy. Our objective is to describe this rare malformation - diphallus - through magnetic resonance imaging, as well as additional findings.

BACKGROUND: congenital pouch colon (CPC) is an extremely rare Congenital gastrointestinal pathology, in which the normal colon is either partially or completely replaced by a pouch-like dilatation communicating with the urogenital tract through a fistula. That's divided into 2 types: Complete CPC and Incomplete CPC. Worldwide and middle east Arabian ethnicity except for Indians, show high scarcity regarding the incidence. Herein, we report a case of incomplete congenital pouch colon syndrome with glandular hypospadias and cardiac anomalies that are considered to be the 2nd documented case in t

BACKGROUND: Anophthalmia and microphthalmia are etiologically and clinically heterogeneous. Lenz microphthalmia is a syndromic form that is typically inherited in an X-linked pattern, though the causative gene mutation is unknown. Townes-Brocks syndrome manifests thumb anomalies, imperforate anus, and ear anomalies. We present a 13-year-old boy with a syndromic microphthalmia phenotype and a clinical diagnosis of Lenz microphthalmia syndrome.

Background: VACTERL association consists of Vertebral, Anorectal, Cardiac, Tracheo-Esophageal, Renal, and Limb defects. The diagnosis depends on the presence of at least three of these structural abnormalities. Methods: The clinical presentation and diagnostic prenatal imaging of VACTERL association are comprehensively reviewed. Results: The most common feature is a vertebral anomaly, found in 60-80% of cases. Tracheo-esophageal fistula is seen in 50-80% of cases and renal malformations in 30% of patients. Limb defects including thumb aplasia/hypoplasia, polydactyly, and radial agenesis/hypopl

Terminal myelocystocele is a rare type of neural tube malformation, consisting of a skin-covered lumbosacral mass, highly associated with other complex abdominal malformations within the OIES complex (omphalocele, imperforate anus, exstrophy of the cloaca and spinal defects). We present a case of a premature female with an extensive lumbosacral mass at birth, as well as an omphalocele, cloacal exstrophy, renal abnormalities, and sacral agenesis. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging revealed a meningocele sac herniating through the bone defects and containing a syringocele sac. Advanced imaging te
