Neonatal aphakia is associated with altered levels of dopamine metabolites in the non-human primate retina.

Neonatal aphakia is associated with retardation of the axial elongation of the neonatal eye. In contrast, form deprivation increases axial elongation, an effect that has been associated with decreased retinal dopamine metabolism. The present investigation was conducted to test the hypothesis that neonatal aphakia induces an effect on the levels of retinal dopamine opposite to form deprivation. Lensectomy and vitrectomy were performed on the right eyes of rhesus monkeys at approximately 1 week of age; their left eyes were unmanipulated. Axial length was measured by A-scan ultrasonography. Prior…

Simultaneous surgery for corneal edema and aphakia: DSEK and placement of a retropupillary iris claw lens.

PURPOSE: The aim was to report the surgical outcomes of simultaneous Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) with a retropupillar … a retropupillary fixated iris claw lens was shown to be a safe surgical technique in patients with aphakia without capsular support and corneal swelling. This surgery resulted in stable endothelial cell counts during the first 6 months after the surgery and an improvement in visual acuity.

Dynamic tube movement after reimplantation of Ahmed glaucoma valve in a child with glaucoma in aphakia.

A 10-year-old girl underwent an Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation as a primary procedure for glaucoma in aphakia due to congenital cataract surgery. Following an unintended accidental excision of AGV tube during bleb revision for hypertensive phase, AGV was explanted and a second AGV was implanted in the same quadrant after 2 weeks. This resulted in a rare complication of dynamic tube movement in the anterior chamber with tube corneal touch and localised corneal oedema. Excision of the offending unstable tube and placement of a paediatric AGV in a different quadrant led to resolution of …

Simultaneous correction of post-traumatic aphakia and aniridia with the use of artificial iris and IOL implantation.

BACKGROUND: Combined post-traumatic aniridia and aphakia demand extensive and complex reconstructive surgery. We present our approach for simultaneous correction of this surgical situation with the use of the ArtificialIris (Dr. Schmidt Intraocularlinsen GmbH, Germany) with a foldable acrylic IOL Lentis L-313 (Oculentis, GmbH, Germany) sutured to its surface. The novelty (our first operation was on June 2010) of this surgical technique is based on the combined use of foldable (with closed haptics) IOL and Artificialiris to correct post-traumatic aniridia and aphakia. METHODS: Four consecutive…

Artisan iris-claw lenses for the correction of aphakia in children following lensectomy for ectopia lentis.

PURPOSE: To describe the results of Artisan iris-claw lens implants in children with aphakia following lensectomy for ectopia lentis. METHOD: We measured visual acuity, refractive error and endothelial cell counts and recorded complications in a group of children after insertion of Artisan iris-claw implants. RESULTS: Artisan implants were implanted in eight eyes of five children. Mean follow-up was 28 months (range: 4-58 months). The mean preoperative LogMAR best-corrected visual acuity was 0.21 ± 0.2, and postoperatively, mean LogMAR uncorrected visual acuity was 0.04 ± 0.09 (p=0.04). Mean…

[The preclinical diagnosis, prevention and treatment of postoperative iridocyclitis in patients after intraocular aphakia correction].

Three hundred and fifty-two patients with senile cataract were followed up. Herpes-virus and Chlamydia infections were proven to be important in the development of exudative complications as observed during the early postoperative period in patients after cataract extraction and IOL implantation. The phagocyte index as well as the phagocyte number were found to be reliably reduced versus the normal values in patients with postoperative iridocyclitis.

Aphakia correction by synthetic intracorneal implantation: a new tool for quantitative predetermination of the optical quality.

To improve the a priori estimation of optical quality of synthetic intracorneal implantation, numerical calculations were performed involving the intraocular overpressure, the cleavage depth and the type of the implant. Optical correction ratios, that were determined, are in close agreement with the obtained mechanical effects.

Epikeratoplasty for adult and pediatric aphakia, myopia, and keratoconus: the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary experience.

Between February, 1985 and February, 1987, 49 eyes of 47 patients underwent epikeratoplasty for one of the following indications: adult aphakia (21 eyes; 20 patients), pediatric aphakia (10 eyes; 10 patients), myopia (7 eyes; 6 patients), and keratoconus (11 eyes; 11 patients). Follow-up at least 12 months (average = 18 months) is available for all 49 eyes. Of 49 eyes, 44 (90%) were anatomically successful with an intact, clear lenticule at least 12 months post-operatively, with no significant difference between the four groups (adult aphakia = 90%, pediatric aphakia = 90%, myopia = 86%, and k…

[Experiences with secondary implantation of the Choyce Mark IX anterior chamber lens in unilateral aphakia].

Choyce Mark IX lenses were implanted in 72 patients between 71 and 86 years of age suffering from unilateral aphakia, who could not be helped with contact lenses; 38 of the patients were observed for a period of more than 16 months. The lenses were attached in the angle of the anterior chamber. None of the patients showed signs of the previously feared complications such as corneal decompensation, secondary glaucoma or iridocyclitis. The Choyce lens is ideally suited for secondary implantation. The operation is simple and post-operative reactions disappear in less than a week. The lens sits fi…

Epikeratophakia: the surgical correction of aphakia. II. Preliminary results in a non-human primate model.

We have developed a new form of refractive surgery, epikeratophakia, in which a disc of donor corneal tissue is lathed to a specific dioptric power and sutured on top of the recipient's cornea after the recipient epithelium has been removed. The optical correction obtained with epikeratophakia should be similar in quality to that of a contact lens, but would be permanent and would require no maintenance. A non-human primate model was used to test the predictability, stability, and clarity of epikeratophakia grafts. After surgery, the grafts did not always re-epithelialize readily; this problem

The influence of new surgical procedures on retinal pathology in aphakia after congenital cataract surgery.

After reviewing the incidence of aphakic retinal detachment more specifically on eyes that have been submitted to surgery for congenital cataracts, the authors make some remarks and discuss the value, the advantages, and the yet unknown risks that the new methods of lens removal may have as regards retinal pathology. Special consideration is given to the balance of the advantages: more complete elimination of the opacities, lower incidence of immediate morbidity, better visual results and postoperative possibilities of retinal examinations; against the, as yet unknown, late retinal complicatio

Complications and visual outcome of sutureless, scleral fixated intraocular lens in cases with traumatic aphakia.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to describe the complications and outcome of sutureless scleral fixated intraocular lens (SFIOL) implantation in traumatic aphakia. SETTING: The study was conducted in a tertiary eye care centre in South India. DESIGN: The study involved a retrospective data analysis. METHODS: Medical records of cases with traumatic aphakia who had undergone sutureless SFIOL implantation in the last 2 years were included in the study. Data on intraoperative and postoperative complications and visual outcome were collected and analysed. RESULTS: In total, 45 cases were recr…
