Disrupted intrathalamic and thalamocortical structural covariance networks in posttraumatic stress disorder.

The thalamus is a heterogeneous structure crucial for corticocortical communication, affective-perceptual integration, motor preparation, and memory-related functions. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by various symptoms that likely relate to thalamic functions. Group-level and individual differential structural covariance (SC) analyses were conducted on intrathalamic, thalamocortical, and thalamosubcortical volumetric networks by segmenting structural MRI data from 2,784 subjects (PTSD n = 1,306; controls n = 1,478) into 25 thalamic nuclei per hemisphere. We found that PT

Multi-tasking deep network for tinnitus classification and severity prediction from multimodal structural MR images.

Objective:Subjective tinnitus is an auditory phantom perceptual disorder without an objective biomarker. Fast and efficient diagnostic tools will advance clinical practice by detecting or confirming the condition, tracking change in severity, and monitoring treatment response. Motivated by evidence of subtle anatomical, morphological, or functional information in magnetic resonance images of the brain, we examine data-driven machine learning methods for joint tinnitus classification (tinnitus or no tinnitus) and tinnitus severity prediction.Approach:We propose a deep multi-task multimodal fram

Corticostriatal functional connectivity of bothersome tinnitus in single-sided deafness.

Subjective tinnitus is an auditory phantom perceptual disorder without an objective biomarker. Bothersome tinnitus in single-sided deafness (SSD) is particularly challenging to treat because the deaf ear can no longer be stimulated by acoustic means. We contrasted an SSD cohort with bothersome tinnitus (TIN; N = 15) against an SSD cohort with no or non-bothersome tinnitus (NO TIN; N = 15) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). All study participants had normal hearing in one ear and severe or profound hearing loss in the other. We evaluated corticostriatal functional

Clinical approach to monitoring variability associated with adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is a voice disorder characterized by considerable intra- and intersubject variability. Although objective, acoustic measures of voice may provide a metric for ADSD, such measures can be inefficient in documenting such characteristics. This project integrated a simple auditory-perceptual measure termed "laryngeal overpressure" (LO) with measures of acoustic variability. METHODS: Ten adults diagnosed with ADSD were sequentially followed over a period of 3 to 6 months. Standard voice recordings were obtained at each point, and acoustic measures wer

A discrete serotonergic circuit involved in the generation of tinnitus behavior.

Although dysregulated serotonergic neurotransmission has been implicated in the pathophysiology of tinnitus, the precise neural circuit mechanisms underlying this complex sensory neurological disorder remain elusive. In the current study, we investigated whether a serotonergic input from the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) to the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), a key auditory brain region whose hyperactivity is associated with tinnitus, modulates behaviors in mice consistent with the presence of tinnitus. Using neural tracing and viral-genetic methods, we identified an anatomically and functionally

Manual laryngeal reposturing as a primary approach for mutational falsetto.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Mutational falsetto is a functional voice disorder characterized by failure of the male high-pitched preadolescent voice to transition to the lower pitch of adolescence and adulthood. Few objective outcomes data exist regarding the effectiveness of voice therapy for this poorly understood disorder. This study examined the immediate effects of a single therapy session using manual laryngeal reposturing as a primary approach in the management of mutational falsetto. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series, pre-/posttreatment. METHODS: Manual circumlaryngeal techniques, i

Inputs to a physiologically characterized region of the inferior colliculus of the young adult CBA mouse.

Presbycusis is a sensory perceptual disorder involving loss of high-pitch hearing and reduced ability to process biologically relevant acoustic signals in noisy environments. The present investigation is part of an ongoing series of studies aimed at discerning the neural bases of presbycusis. The purpose of the present experiment was to delineate the inputs to a functionally characterized region of the dorsomedial inferior colliculus (IC, auditory midbrain) in young, adult CBA mice. Focal, iontophoretic injections of horseradish peroxidase were made in the 18-24 kHz region of dorsomedial IC of

[Significance of auditory processing deficits for the pathogenesis of reading and spelling disorders].

OBJECTIVE: It has been claimed that children with dyslexia show auditory processing deficits and a training of auditory perception is recommended as a therapy. this study addresses the question whether a causal connection between auditory perception and dyslexia can be proven empirically. METHOD: 27 dyslexic children with average intelligence and normal hearing and 31 controls were examined. The auditory perception ability was judged with non-linguistic (pitch, tone duration, sound discrimination tasks) and verbal (speech in noise, compressed speech) tasks. In addition auditory short-term mem

Evaluation of the nonorganic hearing loss suspect.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the utility of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in the assessment of the nonorganic suspect because DPOAE analysis constitutes an objective test of hair-cell function that yields audiometriclike data. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of clinical findings. SETTING: Audiology outpatient clinic of our university's medical center. PATIENTS: The study cohort comprised 30 patients who presented with a profile of suspicion for nonorganic hearing loss. Most cases were found, with the aid of DPOAE testing, to be nonorganic or to have nonorganic overlays to org

Poor frequency discrimination is related to oral language disorder in children: a psychoacoustic study.

Some children have difficulty in perceiving differences between sounds, even though they have normal hearing sensitivity, and it has been suggested that such problems could lead to difficulties in language and literacy development. Poor ability to distinguish sounds on the basis of frequency (perceived as pitch) has been described in poor readers on a variety of auditory processing tasks. The aim of the present study was three-fold: to determine whether children with specific language impairment (SLI) have difficulty discriminating frequency, whether this deficit is specific to the frequency d

Unilateral musical hallucinations and all that jazz.

A 78-year-old hearing-impaired woman who presented to hospital with a stroke and a subsequent epileptic seizure later developed unilateral musical hallucinations in her better hearing (right) ear. She was found to have a left-sided temporal epileptic focus and the music ceased after a second anti-convulsant was introduced. Comments are made on unusual features of the hallucination and its probable causation.

Spatial and temporal auditory processing deficits following right hemisphere infarction. A psychophysical study.

Higher auditory function in a patient was investigated following a right hemisphere infarction between the middle and posterior cerebral artery territories involving the insula. The patient complained of lack of musical appreciation and a battery of tests confirmed a dissociated receptive musical deficit in the presence of normal appreciation of environmental sounds and speech. The ability to detect continuous changes in sound frequency in the form of sinusoidal frequency modulation was preserved. There was, however, a deficit in the analysis of rapid temporal sequences of notes which could un

On the effect of cross-hearing and clinical masking on the auditory brain-stem evoked response.

The effects of cross-hearing from the non-test ear were examined during the acquisition of the auditory brain-stem evoked response (ABR). Effective masking levels were derived from a normal hearing subject and the results used to obtain masked versus unmasked ABR thresholds in varying types of unilateral hearing loss. The results indicate that in the presence of a hearing loss adequate masking of the non-test ear is essential for valid ABR results.

Serial auditory-evoked potentials in the diagnosis and monitoring of a child with Landau-Kleffner syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A boy, aged 2 1/2 yr, experienced sudden deterioration of speech and language abilities. He saw multiple medical professionals across 2 yr. By almost 5 yr, his vocabulary diminished from 50 words to 4, and he was referred to our speech and hearing center. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to heighten awareness of Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) and emphasize the importance of an objective test battery that includes serial auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) to audiologists who often are on the front lines of diagnosis and treatment delivery when faced with a child experiencing u

Testing the dual-pathway model for auditory processing in human cortex.

Analogous to the visual system, auditory information has been proposed to be processed in two largely segregated streams: an anteroventral ("what") pathway mainly subserving sound identification and a posterodorsal ("where") stream mainly subserving sound localization. Despite the popularity of this assumption, the degree of separation of spatial and non-spatial auditory information processing in cortex is still under discussion. In the present study, a statistical approach was implemented to investigate potential behavioral dissociations for spatial and non-spatial auditory processing in stro
