Short-term effects of cannabis legalisation in Germany on driving under the influence of cannabis: a difference-in-differences analysis using Austria as a control.

BACKGROUND: In April 2024, Germany legalised adult cannabis possession and cultivation, and in August 2024 established legal THC-limits for driving. This study aimed to examine short-term impacts on (1) cannabis use and (2) driving under the influence of cannabis (DUIC), and (3) investigates the extent of DUIC involving cannabis combined with alcohol or other drugs (DUIC(+)). METHODS: Data came from two cross-sectional population surveys in Germany and Austria (control) before (t0: Nov-Dec 2023) and after legalisation (t1: Nov 2024-Jan 2025). We assessed 12-month cannabis use among adults age…

Comparative assessment of radiocarbon and balance method for determining biogenic and fossil CO2 emissions from waste-to-energy plants in Austria and China.

Accurate quantification of biogenic and fossil CO2 emissions from waste-to-energy (WtE) plants is essential for greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting and emissions trading. This study compares two standardized methods - the Radiocarbon Method (ISO 13833) and the Balance Method (ISO 18466) - based on extensive sampling campaigns at three Austrian and one Chinese WtE facility. The Radiocarbon Method determines the biogenic CO2 share via 14C analysis of flue gas, while the Balance Method derives biogenic and fossil fractions through coupled mass- and energy-balance modeling. Across all facilities, both …

Translation, cultural adaption and content validity evaluation of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire into German-a cross-sectional study in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Extending the concept of work-life balance and recognising that many people's lives cannot easily be divided into work and non-work life, Occupational Balance enables the exploration of a person's satisfaction with the balance and variance of occupations in daily life at most contemporary levels. OBJECTIVE: To effectively measure Occupational Balance in the German-speaking population, this study developed a German version of the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11-G) by conducting a cross-sectional study involving translation, cultural adaptation and content validity evaluat

Heterogeneity of treatment preferences in the absence of guideline recommendations - a case vignette study in colorectal cancer tumor boards in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of colorectal cancer, the S3-Guideline of the German Guideline Program in Oncology supports clinical decision-making. Centers certified by the German Cancer Society are required to implement the guideline recommendations as comprehensively as possible. When guidelines provide insufficient or ambiguous evidence, heterogeneity of treatment preferences is likely to emerge across individual centers. The aim of this study is to describe the preferences of the centers' tumor boards for treatment decisions when clear, evidence-based guideline recommendations are lacking.

Nationwide estimates of SARS-CoV-2 infection fatality rates and numbers needed to vaccinate for COVID-19 vaccines in 2024 in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Post-pandemic years are characterized by widespread previous population immunization against COVID-19. Whether and for whom COVID-19 vaccinations are still justified is unclear. We use nationwide estimates of IFR and literature-derived estimates of vaccine effectiveness (VE) to calculate numbers needed to vaccinate to prevent one COVID-19 death (NNV) and for one life-year saved (LYS) in Austria in 2024. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, we calculate SARS-CoV-2 IFR during 2024 in Austria according to previously published wastewater-based infection estimates and available mor…

An imperial-royal first aid rescue kit in Austria's high-mountain warfare 1914-1918: antisepsis, antivenin, and water hygiene.

The development of modern first aid around the year 1900 was intricately connected to industrial standardization, bacteriological advancements, and the dissemination of global medical knowledge. This study examines the material culture of military first aid in high-altitude warfare during the First World War, utilizing a first aid kit from the Imperial-Royal Landwehr documented in the Ortler region (South Tyrol). The research integrates object analysis, comparison with manufacturer catalogues and international first aid kits from the era, and historical contextualization. The first aid kit exh

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and the raccoon (Procyon lotor)-their role and impact of maintaining and transmitting zoonotic diseases in Austria, Central Europe.

The neozoan species raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and raccoon (Procyon lotor) are widespread in Europe and potential vectors of many diseases that can threaten human and domestic animal health. Facing a further spread of these species, it is important to know about (i) pathogens imported and/or (ii) pathogens acquired in the new habitat. Thus, we investigated the parasite fauna of wild raccoon dogs and raccoons from Austria, at the edge of their new distribution range. The eight examined raccoons were nearly free of pathogens including Baylisascaris procyonis, and thus assumed to have…

Infections caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies avium, hominissuis, and paratuberculosis in free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) in Austria, 2001-2004.

Between 2001 and 2004, 14 Austrian free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) infected by Mycobacterium avium species were observed. Eight of the cases were from different geographical regions, and six originated from the same hunting area. The affected animals had signs of diarrhea, severe weight loss, and emaciation. On post-mortem examination, lymphadenitis associated with grossly enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes as well as multiple caseous or purulent nodular lesions in the thickened wall of the intestines were present in all animals. In 10 cases M. avium subsp. avium and in four ca…

Use of pulsed field electrophoresis of DNA restriction fragments for comparing Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from human infections and food in Austria.

Twenty-five Listeria monocytogenes strains of human and food origin were studied, using low-frequency-cleavage restriction endonucleases and pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Sixteen different restriction patterns were obtained using ApaI and SmaI. The human isolates showed profiles different from those of the food isolates, thus strongly suggesting that the two human infections selected for this study did not originate from the contaminated foodstuffs examined at the same time. This method allowed it to clearly distinguish between strains apparently similar [i.e. belonging to the same serovar

[Mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome in Austria -- Report of four cases; one with cardiac arrest. First of two parts: clinical observations (author's transl)].

Since October 1978, four cases of mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome, a disease previously not yet described in our country were observed in our childrens hospital. This particular disease has been described quite frequently in Japan since 1967. It has a characteristic manifestation being mostly benign and self limited. In a few cases however acute cardiac arrest has been described. The first case we observed expired as a result of acute coronary infarction on the twentyfifth day of illness although clinical improvement had been previously noted. At post mortem examination the coronary arteries

Conjoint analysis of social inequality indicators in diet and physical activity app (non-)users: Representative online surveys in Austria, Germany and Italy.

BACKGROUND: Mobile interventions for health promotion (mHealth) are promising behaviour change tools. Yet they are infrequently used, and research suggests that use may be unevenly distributed in the population, potentially widening existing health inequalities. OBJECTIVE: This study tested for individual and joint associations between socio-demographic characteristics and nutrition and physical activity app use. METHODOLOGY: Nationally representative samples for Austria, Germany and Italy were recruited with N = 1974 participants in total. In an online survey, participants reported on nutri…

Operationalizing an ecogeomorphological framework for national-scale landslide susceptibility: A hybrid PCA-AHP approach to support risk-informed spatial planning in Austria.

Human settlements, urban centers, and critical infrastructure in Alpine regions are increasingly exposed to natural hazards. In Austria, while disaster risk management is coordinated nationally, institutional governance is currently distributed across nine federal provinces, resulting in a patchwork of regional datasets and mapping practices. To support greater consistency at the national scale, this study proposes an ecogeomorphological conceptual framework (EGCF) for risk-informed spatial planning, structured around three thematic pillars: ecology, geomorphology, and hydrology. The framework…

Expert Opinions on Postoperative Complications in Breast Cancer Surgery After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy: A Descriptive Study Through Structured Interviews With Surgeons in Austria.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is an important component in preparing breast cancer patients for surgery. Its impact on postoperative complications, such as wound infections and bleeding, remains unclear. While most studies show no increase in complication rates, factors such as smoking may elevate risk. Understanding surgeons' perspectives on bleeding and related influences is therefore essential. METHODS: This study used a questionnaire on bleeding and wound healing. After ethical approval in Vienna and Burgenland, 33 surgeons were recruited. Data were collected between July an
