Recent Advancements in the Relationship Between the Autonomic Nervous System and the Pancreas, Encompassing the Regulation of Regeneration and Apoptosis.

A previous review by the author reported relationships between the autonomic nervous system and the pancreas, including regulation of regeneration and apoptosis. This review documents the key clinical and laboratory features that have either been discovered since the previous update (published August 2004) or were characterized earlier but have since been confirmed or expanded in subsequent studies. These advancements regarding regulation of insulin secretion, pancreatic regeneration, apoptosis and carcinogenesis, and gene expression and growth factors provide a deeper understanding of how the…

Indirect assessment of autonomic nervous system balance for prediction of hemorrhage: A preclinical study in a porcine model.

Hemorrhage is a common and significant complication of trauma or surgical procedures. Rapid and accurate assessment of a patient's condition during hemorrhage is crucial for management. The primary objective was to describe pupillometry parameters and parasympathetic tone activity (PTA) during hemorrhage. The secondary objective was to develop a model to predict blood losses. In this preclinical study, 15 pigs were used. After anesthesia, 35 mL/kg of blood was removed over 1 h. Hypovolemia was maintained for 90 min. Indirect assessment of autonomic nervous system balance was based on the monit…

Ultrasonography of the Vagus Nerve for ALS Patients: Correlations with Clinical Data and Dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System.

Background and Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of both upper and lower motor neurons, leading to the rapid decline of motor function. In recent years, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has also been increasingly recognized as a contributing factor in various neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS. This study is the second publication from our ALS research cohort at Kaunas Clinics. Our previous work examined ultrasonographic changes in the phrenic nerve as a supplementary diagnostic …

The Effect of Surgical Trauma in the Nasal Cavity on the Behavior in the Open Field and the Autonomic Nervous System of Rats.

In this article, the effect of surgical damage to the nasal mucosa in rats under the action of general anesthesia was investigated. The motor activity and heart rate variability (HRV) of rats were studied before and 2 days after the surgery. After surgical exposure, motor activity decreased, the time of fading and grooming increased, VLF increased, and HF decreased. Surgical trauma of the nasal septum in rats at the early postoperative stage promotes a pronounced stress response in the form of a sharp shift in the balance of the autonomic nervous system towards the sympathetic level and causes…

Cardiovascular Effects of the Essential Oil of Croton argyrophylloides in Normotensive Rats: Role of the Autonomic Nervous System.

Cardiovascular effects of the essential oil of Croton argyrophylloides Muell. Arg. (EOCA) were investigated in normotensive rats. In saline-pretreated anesthetized or conscious rats, intravenous (i.v.) injection of the EOCA induced dose-dependent hypotension. Dose-dependent tachycardia was observed only in conscious rats. In anesthetized rats, cervical bivagotomy failed to enhance EOCA-induced hypotension but unmasked significant bradycardia. In conscious rats, i.v. pretreatment with methylatropine, but not with atenolol or L-NAME, reduced both hypotensive and tachycardiac responses to EOCA. H

An increase in glucose concentration in the lateral ventricles of the brain induces changes in autonomic nervous system activity.

OBJECTIVE: Changes in glucose levels mobilize a neuroendocrine response that prevents or corrects glycemia. The hypothalamus is the main area of the brain that regulates glycemic homeostasis. Metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, are related to imbalance of this control. The modulation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity is mediated by neuronal hypothalamic pathways. In the present work, we investigate whether glucose concentration in the hypothalamic area changes ANS activity. METHODS: Glucose was administered intracerebroventricularly to 90-day-old rats, and samples of bl…

Endotoxin-induced injury of the central, autonomic and enteric nervous systems and intestinal muscularis in Thoroughbred horses.

To evaluate the effects of endotoxin on the morphology of the equine central, autonomic and enteric nervous system and intestinal muscularis, six Thoroughbred horses with experimentally induced endotoxaemia were examined. The lesions in the central nervous system consisted of perivascular oedema around arterioles, suggesting brain oedema, and ring haemorrhages around veins, similar to those in human patients with septic shock. In the cranial mesenteric ganglia, neuronal cell bodies became pink or red, with shrinkage of cytoplasm indicative of ischaemic changes; intramural and perivascular infi

Vestibular nucleus projections to the parabrachial nucleus in rabbits: implications for vestibular influences on the autonomic nervous system.

Acute vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are characterized by autonomic effects such as pallor, nausea, and vomiting. Previous anatomic and physiologic studies suggest that one potential mediator of these effects may be light, direct vestibular nuclear projections to the nucleus tractus solitarius and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. This study presents evidence for relatively dense, direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the parabrachial nucleus. Male albino rabbits received injections of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the vestibular nuclei. The tracer w

Some aspects of the development of the peripheral autonomic nervous system in the abdomen and the pelvis of the rat. Preliminary results.

The development of the relation of the left vagus nerve with the esophagus and the stomach and the relation of the pelvic plexus with the urinary bladder during the last week before birth has been studied by means of the AChE in toto method (Baljet and Drukker 1975, Bloot et al. 1984). It has been established that the gastric branches can be traced as far as the greater curvature until the 18th day. On the 18th day the stomach increases as much in size that on the 19th day these branches can not be traced so far any more. The growth pattern of the left vagus nerve, the stomach and the esophagu

[The present state of knowledge concerning the effect of electromagnetic fields of 50/60 Hz on the circulatory system and the autonomic nervous system].

Diseases of the circulatory system together with neoplastic diseases are recognised as the major health problem in the contemporary world. Their origin and aggravation may be related to the exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) since theoretically, disorders in the functioning of the circulatory system are most likely due to electric impulses generated in it by external magnetic fields. The nervous system, including its autonomic part which regulates, among others, the functioning of the circulatory system, because of its electric nature is another system which may be disturbed by EMFs. Aging-related autonomic nervous system imbalance and adrenergic regulation of immunity: Implications for inflammaging, autoimmunity, and long COVID.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in immune homeostasis by integrating sympathetic and parasympathetic signals that regulate inflammation, immune cell trafficking, and tolerance. Aging is associated with a progressive autonomic imbalance characterized by sympathetic overactivation, reduced parasympathetic tone, and impaired β-adrenergic signaling in immune cells, which together contribute to inflammaging and immune dysregulation. In this review, we discuss how aging-related alterations in adrenergic pathways affect immune cell differentiation and cytokine networks, with p…
