Diversity of Babesia in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Poland.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were: (1) to estimate Babesia prevalence in the most common species of tick in Poland, Ixodes ricinus, in two recreational areas (Urwitałt in the Mazury Lake District and Bielański Forest in Warsaw), and (2) to evaluate the molecular diversity of Babesia isolates in questing I. ricinus in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Questing ticks were collected from vegetation in forest areas in Urwitałt near Mikołajki and in Bielański Forest (Warsaw). Purified genomic DNA was used with specific primers to amplify a fragment of the Babesia spp. 18S rRNA gene. RESULTS: Tick-

High seroprevalence of Babesia antibodies among Borrelia burgdorferi-infected humans in Sweden.

In northern Europe, tick-borne diseases such as Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are well known. The actual incidence of Babesia infections, however, has remained elusive. In this study, the prevalence of antibodies against two Babesia spp. was investigated in a cohort of patients that were seropositive for Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.). Data were compared to a control group of healthy individuals. Sera were collected from 283 individuals residing in the southernmost region of Sweden, Skåne County. Almost one third of the sera were from patients with a conf

Seroprevalence of babesiosis in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals.

UNLABELLED: Interest in Babesia species is gaining an increasing attention as an emerging tick-borne pathogen. Infection is primarily transmitted through Ixodes ticks, and alternatively by blood transfusions from asymptomatic donors. AIM: The aim of the study was detection of Babesia seroprevalence in different groups of population with the usage of experimental B. divergens whole-cell slide antigen and commercial B. microti immunofluorescence assay substrate slide. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Indirect immunofluorescence assay trial was performed by testing of 145 blood samples of different origi

Babesiosis Surveillance - Wisconsin, 2001-2015.

Babesiosis is an emerging zoonotic disease caused primarily by Babesia microti, an intraerythocytic protozoan. Babesia microti, like the causal agents for Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, is endemic to the northeastern and upper midwestern United States where it is usually transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Although babesiosis is usually a mild to moderate illness, older or immunocompromised persons can develop a serious malaria-like illness that can be fatal without prompt treatment. The most common initial clinical signs and symptoms of babesiosis (fever, fatigue, chills, …

Human babesiosis on Nantucket Island. Clinical features.

Between 20 July and 15 Octoboer 1975, five cases of human infection with Babesia microti were diagnosed on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The illness was characterized by fever, drenching sweats, shaking chills, myalgia, arthralgia, extreme fatigue, and a mild-to-moderate hemolytic anemia. None of the patients had a history of splenetomy. Although all patients responded symptomatically to treatment with oral chloroquine phosphate, parasitemia and fatigue frequently persisted for several weeks to months.

Tafenoquine Is a Promising Drug Candidate for the Treatment of Babesiosis.

Due to drug resistance, commonly used anti-Babesia drugs have limited efficacy against babesiosis and inflict severe side effects. Tafenoquine (TAF) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2018 for the radical cure of Plasmodium vivax infection and for malaria prophylaxis. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of TAF for the treatment of Babesia infection and elucidated the suspected mechanisms of TAF activity against Babesia parasites. Parasitemia and survival rates of Babesia rodhaini-infected BALB/c and SCID mice were used to explore the role of the immune response in Babesia inf

Genetic Diversity and Coexistence of Babesia in Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from Northeastern China.

Background: Human babesiosis is an emerging zoonotic disease transmitted by ticks in China. A few systematic reports on Babesia spp. was involved with ticks, especially in the human babesiosis endemic areas in Northeastern China. Materials and Methods: Ticks were collected from 30 individual waypoints along 2.0 km transects in two recreational forests. Babesia spp. infection in ticks was screened by amplifying the partial 18s rRNA gene with subsequent sequencing. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between tick infection and related environmental ris

Babesiosis: An unusual cause of sepsis after kidney transplantation and review of the literature.

We report a unique case of babesiosis presenting as sepsis after kidney transplantation. A 70-year-old female kidney transplant recipient presented with fever, hemolytic anemia, and acute kidney injury, and met three of four systemic inflammatory response syndrome criteria. Serology was positive for Babesia microti, confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. The patient was treated with atovaquone and azithromycin and made a full recovery. Reports of babesiosis after solid organ transplantation are rare, with only four prior cases reported in the literature. We report the first case of babesiosis…

Statewide Passive Surveillance of Ixodes scapularis and Associated Pathogens in Maine.

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the primary vector of multiple human pathogens, including the causative agents of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Both I. scapularis and its associated pathogens have expanded their geographic range throughout the northeastern Unites States and into northern New England. Through this study, we present an updated distribution of I. scapularis in Maine and report the first statewide passive surveillance infection and coinfection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia microti within the state's I. scapular…

Babesia banethi sp. nov. in red foxes.

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are widespread tick-borne intraerythrocytic protozoa, infecting a broad range of vertebrate hosts. Red foxes are reservoirs of Babesia vulpes, belonging to the Babesia microti-like group (clade I), and play an important role in the epidemiology of canine and wildlife babesiosis. Besides B. vulpes, another species of this genus was molecularly reported in red foxes from Israel and Iraq and provisionally named "Babesia sp. MML-2014"; however, no morphological description of this small Babesia species was provided, preventing a proper species naming. METHODS: Infection w…

Babesiosis in dogs and cats--expanding parasitological and clinical spectra.

Canine babesiosis caused by different Babesia species is a protozoal tick-borne disease with worldwide distribution and global significance. Historically, Babesia infection in dogs was identified based on the morphologic appearance of the parasite in the erythrocyte. All large forms of Babesia were designated Babesia canis, whereas all small forms of Babesia were considered to be Babesia gibsoni. However, the development of molecular methods has demonstrated that other Babesia species such as Babesia conradae, Babesia microti like piroplasm, Theileria spp. and a yet unnamed large form Babesia …

Anti-babesial activity of a series of 6,7-dimethoxyquinazoline-2,4-diamines (DMQDAs).

Diminazene aceturate (DA), imidocarb dipropionate (ID), atovaquone (ATO), azithromycin (AZI), clindamycin, and quinine have been used to treat animal and human babesiosis for many years, despite their negative effects and rising indications of resistance. Thus, finding anti-babesial compounds that can either treat the infection or lower the dose of drugs given has been a primary objective. Quinazolines are one of the most important nitrogen heterocycles, with a wide range of pharmacological activities including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, sedative-hypnotic, anti-histaminic, anti-cancer, and

Confirmatory testing of military blood donors screening positive for Babesia infection.

BACKGROUND: Babesia microti is a transfusion-transmitted pathogen. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends blood donor screening only in endemic states, whereas the Military Health System performs universal Babesia screening regardless of geographic location. However, the epidemiology of Babesia positivity and clinical follow-up among blood donors in non-endemic regions remains poorly characterized. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study evaluating Babesia screening results from three military blood donation centers in non-endemic states: Naval Base San Dieg…

Babesiosis.

Babesiosis is the disease caused by infection of the erythrocytes of mammals by Babesia species, which are Apicomplexa protozoa belonging to the suborder Piroplasmidea and the family Babesiidae. They are different from the Theileriidae, which can also infect white blood cells and endothelial cells. Babesiosis is one of the most important tick-borne infectious diseases of domestic and wild mammals and still poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for veterinary practitioners around the world. It is an increasing problem worldwide because of the expansion of tick habitats and the
