Bacillus subtilis is the best-studied Gram-positive microorganism, but little is known about how the presence and utilization of diverse carbon sources impacts its production of biofilm. BACKGROUND: The main component of potatoes is starch, which can serve as an easy breeding ground for Bacillus cereus during storage. This can decrease the shelf life of potatoes and pose food safety issues.
METHODS: This study isolated several strains of B. cereus from rotten potatoes in the market as well as one of their bacteriophages, Bacillus phage PHZU0001, from municipal sewage. Early trials of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)-based immunotherapy for melanoma consistently show a trend toward improved clinical outcomes in patients treated with BCG compared with observation alone. As an extension of these findings, investigators have initiated the Malignant Melanoma Active Immunotherapy (MMAIT) trials in patients with stage III (MMAIT-III) and stage IV (MMAIT-IV) disease.
