Plantaricin A reverses resistance to ciprofloxacin of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by inhibiting efflux pumps.

Overexpression of Staphylococcus aureus efflux pumps is commonly associated with antibiotic resistance, causing conventional antibiotics to be unsuccessful in combating multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Reducing the activity of the efflux pump is an urgently required to tackle this problem. Here, we found that plantaricin A (PlnA), an antimicrobial peptide derived from Lactobacillus plantarum, had a synergistic effect with ciprofloxacin (CIP), reducing the IC90 of CIP by eight times. Subsequently, changes in membrane permeability, membrane potential, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) w

Antibiotic and antimicrobial peptide combinations: synergistic inhibition of Pseudomonas fluorescens and antibiotic-resistant variants.

Variants resistant to penicillin G (RvP), streptomycin (RvS), lincomycin (RvL) and rifampicin (RvR) were developed from a colistin-sensitive isolate of Pseudomonas fluorescens LRC-R73 (P. fluorescens). Cell fatty acid composition, K(+) efflux and sensitivity to antimicrobial peptides (nisin Z, pediocin PA-1/AcH and colistin) alone or combined with antibiotics were determined. P. fluorescens was highly sensitive to kanamycin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol at minimal inhibitory concentrations of 0.366, 0.305 and 0.732 μg/ml respectively. P. fluorescens, RvP, RvS, RvL and RvR were resistant to

[Experimental study of the allergic properties of tomicide. The allergic properties of the native preparation].

The allergenic properties of thomycide, an antibacterial substance produced by Streptococcus sp., Thom-1606 active against Streptococci, Staphylococci and Ps. aeruginosa were studied in the reactions of hypersensitivity of immediate (HIT) and delayed (HRT) types. It was found that thomycide induced no HIT in guinea-pigs sensitized with the preparation. The reaction of HRT was slightly pronounced in the animals and must be defined by the nutrient medium used for the strain growth. Preliminary exposure of the animals to thomycide resulted in lower levels of anaphylactic reactions in the animals

Genomic insights into probiotic functionality of Enterococcus hirae 3K isolated from Egyptian coastal sediments with special reference to exopolysaccharide production and antimicrobial activity potential.

Marine lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial microbes that play a vital role in maintaining aquatic ecosystems and have significant pote … ied in the genome sequence. Genome mining identified genes encoding enterolysin A and lanthipeptide bacteriocins, signifying a broad antimicrobial potential that correlates with the observed inhibitory activity against the target microbial pathogens. Additionally, exopolysaccharide (EPS) biosynthetic clusters were also predicted in silico, indicating the capac …

Investigation of the Effects of Postbiotics Obtained from Pediococcus acidilactici on Specific Biomarker Expressions in Intestinal Tissue.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is a layered structure comprising fundamental components that play important roles in regulating paracellular permeability. Disruption of intestinal barrier homeostasis predisposes to infections, mucosal damage, and metabolic and allergic diseases. To provide protection against potential damage to the intestinal mucosa, agents such as prebiotics and probiotics are recommended due to their ability to secrete components and metabolites (e.g., bacteriocins, organic acids, enzymes) that can exert beneficial biological effects. The aim of this study is to comprehensiv…

R pyocin sensitivity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates from different disease types.

Introduction. Multidrug-resistant infections by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa are common in healthcare settings but are increasingly difficult to treat due to high rates of antimicrobial resistance.Hypothesis/Gap Statement. Interest has developed in using R pyocins, bacteriocins produced by P. aeruginosa, as a species-specific treatment. We hypothesize that understanding the connections between disease type and R pyocin sensitivity will inform future treatment development.Aim. To evaluate the patterns of R pyocin sensitivity across a library of 247 clinical P. aeruginosa is…

Recent Advancements in Harnessing Lactic Acid Bacterial Metabolites for Fruits and Vegetables Preservation.

Postharvest losses in fruits and vegetables exert substantial economic and environmental repercussions. Chemical interventions are being widely utilized for the past six decades which may lead to significant health complications. Bioprotection of fruits and vegetables is the need of the hour in which use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with GRAS status predominantly stands out. Incorporation of LAB in postharvest fruits and vegetables suppresses the growth of spoilage organisms by synthesizing various antimicrobial compounds such as bacteriocins, organic acids, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), exopolys…

Dynamic changes in the Streptococcus pneumoniae transcriptome during transition from biofilm formation to invasive disease upon influenza A virus infection.
