[Hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic-uremic syndrome--E. coli as the etiologic agent. I. Bacteriology and pathogenesis].

Since 1983 when the connection between haemorrhagic colitis (HC), haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), and intestinal infections by verotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC, EHEC) was demonstrated, a lot of arguments has been accumulated showing verotoxins (Shiga-like toxins, SLT) and adhesive fimbria to play a key role in the pathogenicity of the respective E. coli group. The toxins bind via Gb3 receptors to the target cells and after internalization inhibit the protein synthesis. Due to the particular clustering of receptors at cell surfaces, vascular endothelial cells, intestinal epithelial cells as

Pathological and bacteriological investigations of Pasteurella multocida-induced epididymitis in calves.

Between June 2017 and October 2023, five cases of epididymitis caused by Pasteurella multocida were confirmed in four Japanese Black calves and one Japanese Black-Holstein crossbreed calf across five farms in three prefectures in Japan. Although P. multocida is primarily known to cause respiratory diseases in cattle, its role in reproductive disorders, particularly in epididymitis, has not been extensively studied. Histopathological examination showed pyogranulomatous lesions in the epididymal duct and surrounding areas, consisting of ductal extension, immune cell infiltration, epithelial dege

Comparative tests of quality of bacteriological investigation with Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolation.

The results of comparative experimental studies of identification of nontoxigenic C. diphtheriae strain by three different commercial laboratories are presented. A typical nontoxigenic strain of C. diphtheriae biovar mitis was used. For the studies, three lines of ten-fold dilutions of bacterial culture were prepared, followed by control planting on the medium and counting CFU/ml. In the experiment, tampons were pooled with a 24-hour bacterial culture of a nontoxigenic C. diphtheriae strain. Tampons were provided from three different laboratories - ∑-Transwab® with Ames liquid medium (from the

Bacteriological, Clinical and Virulence Aspects of Aeromonas-associated Diseases in Humans.

Aeromonads have been isolated from varied environmental sources such as polluted and drinking water, as well as from tissues and body fluids of cold and warm-blooded animals. A phenotypically and genotypically heterogenous bacteria, aeromonads can be successfully identified by ribotyping and/or by analysing gyrB gene sequence, apart from classical biochemical characterization. Aeromonads are known to cause scepticemia in aquatic organisms, gastroenteritis and extraintestinal diseases such as scepticemia, skin, eye, wound and respiratory tract infections in humans. Several virulence and antibio
