Metronidazole and Pentoxifylline films for the local treatment of chronic periodontal pockets: preparation, in vitro evaluation and clinical assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is one of the most important chronic inflammatory dental diseases arising from the destructive actions caused by a variety of pathogenic organisms presented in the oral cavity. The aim of this study is the preparation and in vitro evaluation of films for the local treatment of periodontal pockets. METHODS: The prepared films contained either metronidazole (Mtr), for its antimicrobial effect in periodontal diseases, using a mixture of polymers namely hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, Carbopol 934 or locally applied Pentoxifylline (PTX), for its anti-inflammatory activity

Multimodal electrophoresis of gold nanoparticles: a real time approach.

A real time multimodal data acquisition imaging setup is developed for the electrophoretic movement of plasmonic nanoparticles. Movement of the nanoparticles is recorded by time-lapse digital imaging at 8-megapixel resolutions. The analysis of the moving nanoparticle band is performed using threshold image and color extraction at respective time frames. The migration dynamics is sensitive to size, nature and the extent of the surface conjugation to the nanoparticle. The dynamics of color intensity of the nanoparticles is shown to be dependent on the extent of stabilization of nanoparticle (by

Dental health status and endodontic treatment of captive brown bears (Ursus arctos ssp.) living in the Bernese bear pit.

The teeth of five adult captive brown bears (Ursus arctos ssp.) were examined and radiographed for occlusion, loss of teeth, dental plaque and calculus, and attrition under general anesthesia. Deposits of dental calculus were found in various locations with an overall prevalence of 8% to 15% of all tooth surfaces. In all five animals, severe enamel and dentinal attrition defects were observed in canine teeth with exposed pulp. Cage-chewing behavior is probably the main cause for the dental attrition. The composition of the food and feeding management are most likely responsible for the lack of

Primary rhabdomyosarcoma of brain and cerebellum. Report of four cases in infants: an immunohistochemical study.

Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) composed of pure mesenchymal derivatives with both embryonal and mature striated muscle cells devoid of neuroblastic elements should be considered rhabdomyosarcomas. Some 13 cases have been reported, and here we study four additional cases in infancy under 3 years of age which represent 0.82% of 483 intracranial tumors studied by us at the Children's Hospital in the last 12 years. Two cases were localized in the temporal lobes, and two were in the cerebellar vermis. All of them were typical embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas at various stages of differentiat

EGFR Amplification in Diffuse Glioma and Its Correlation to Language Tract Integrity.

Background: The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is an important factor in the behavior of diffuse glioma, serving as a potential biomarker for tumor aggressiveness and a therapeutic target. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides insights into the microstructural integrity of brain tissues, allowing for detailed visualization of tumor-induced changes in white matter tracts. This imaging technique can complement molecular pathology by correlating imaging findings with molecular markers and genetic profiles, potentially enhancing the understanding of tumor behavior and aiding in the form

Oral Hygiene and Dietary Behaviors Among Romanian Schoolchildren: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Oral health in children remains a key public health concern, particularly in regions with limited access to preventive programs. Despite improvements in dental care availability, the prevalence of plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, and carious lesions remains high. This study provides updated regional data for Western Romania-a population previously underrepresented in oral health surveillance-and aims to evaluate oral hygiene behaviors, dietary habits, and clinical oral health indicators among Romanian schoolchildren, identifying potential areas for preventive

Analysis of associations between emotions and activities of drug users and their addiction recovery tendencies from social media posts using structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Addiction to drugs and alcohol constitutes one of the significant factors underlying the decline in life expectancy in the US. Several context-specific reasons influence drug use and recovery. In particular emotional distress, physical pain, relationships, and self-development efforts are known to be some of the factors associated with addiction recovery. Unfortunately, many of these factors are not directly observable and quantifying, and assessing their impact can be difficult. Based on social media posts of users engaged in substance use and recovery on the forum Reddit, we empl

CaMKIIα-NpHR-Mediated Optogenetic Inhibition of DRG Glutamatergic Neurons by Flexible Optic Fiber Alleviates Chronic Neuropathic Pain.

Glutamatergic neurons of the dorsal root ganglion (DRGg) exert a significant effect on peripheral nociceptive signal transmission. However, assessing the explicit modulatory effect of DRGg during chronic neuropathic pain (CNP) with neuromodulation techniques remains largely unexplored. Therefore, we inhibited DRGg by optogenetic stimulation and examined whether it could alleviate CNP and associated anxiety-related behaviors in a chronic compressed DRG (CCD) rat model. The CCD pain model was established by inserting an L-shaped rod into the lumbar 5 (L5) intervertebral foramen, and either AAV2-

Assessing Differential Particle Deformability under Microfluidic Flow Conditions.

Assessing the mechanical behavior of nano- and micron-scale particles with complex shapes is fundamental in drug delivery. Although different techniques are available to quantify the bulk stiffness in static conditions, there is still uncertainty in assessing particle deformability in dynamic conditions. Here, a microfluidic chip is designed, engineered, and validated as a platform to assess the mechanical behavior of fluid-borne particles. Specifically, potassium hydroxide (KOH) wet etching was used to realize a channel incorporating a series of micropillars (filtering modules) with different

Integrating breathing-based stress reduction to address stress and alcohol misuse: A novel digital intervention delivered via telehealth and smartphone application.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a critical factor in the development and progression of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and is associated with negative treatment outcomes. Despite its significance, few behavioral interventions specifically address the stress-related pathology underlying AUD, including stress-induced drinking. To address this gap, this study developed and piloted a novel digital intervention, Emotion Regulation via Breathing for Alcohol Misuse (EBA), targeting stress and alcohol misuse. METHOD: EBA integrates breathing-based stress regulation techniques with cognitive-behavioral strategies t

Prolonged anesthesia induces neuroinflammation and complement-mediated microglial synaptic elimination involved in neurocognitive dysfunction and anxiety-like behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) with a high incidence frequently occur in elderly surgical patients closely associated with prolonged anesthesia-induced neurotoxicity. The neuromorphopathological underpinnings of anesthesia-induced neurotoxicity have remained elusive. METHODS: Prolonged anesthesia with sevoflurane was used to establish the sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity (SIN) animal model. Morris water maze, elevated plus maze, and open field test were employed to track SIN rats' cognitive behavior and anxiety-like behaviors. We investigated the neuropathological b

Effects of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic-interpersonal treatments for eating disorders: a meta-analytic inquiry into the role of patient characteristics and change in eating disorder-specific and general psychopathology in remission.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic-interpersonal therapies (PIT) are two widely used and conceptually different outpatient treatments for eating disorders (EDs). To better understand how these treatments works, for whom, and under what circumstances, there is a need for knowledge about how outcomes are affected by diagnosis, comorbidity, changes in psychopathology, and study design. METHOD: Reports on the effects of CBT and PIT for eating disorders were searched. Rates of remission and changes in ED specific- and general psychopathology were computed. Regression mo

Using a combination of click- and tone burst-evoked auditory brain stem response measurements to estimate pure-tone thresholds.

DESIGN: A retrospective medical record review of evoked potential and audiometric data were used to determine the accuracy with which click-evoked and tone burst-evoked auditory brain stem response (ABR) thresholds predict pure-tone audiometric thresholds. METHODS: The medical records were reviewed of a consecutive group of patients who were referred for ABR testing for audiometric purposes over the past 4 yrs. ABR thresholds were measured for clicks and for several tone bursts, including a single-cycle, Blackman-windowed, 250-Hz tone burst, which has a broad spectrum with little energy above

Immunohistochemical and neurochemical studies on nigral and striatal functions in the circling (ci) rat, a genetic animal model with spontaneous rotational behavior.

Asymmetrical spontaneous turning behavior or circling phenomena are often related to components of the dopaminergic system, particularly to an imbalance of nigrostriatal function. When a rotational preference is observed, it is typically in a direction away from the brain hemisphere with higher striatal dopaminergic transmission. We have recently described a rat mutant (ci) with spontaneous circling behavior and other signs of functional brain asymmetry. Neurochemical determinations showed that mutants of both genders have significantly lower concentrations of dopamine and dopamine metabolites

Multimodal biomarkers of response to transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation in disorders of consciousness: a study protocol.

Patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) have limited options for arousal-promoting interventions. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has shown potential to improve conscious behaviors in a subset of patients with DOC. However, substantial interindividual variability in treatment response remains, and reliable objective biomarkers for identifying patients who may benefit are still lacking. This study is designed as a single-center, prospective, exploratory clinical study. A total of 50 patients with DOC will be consecutivel

Discovering the unexpected: Insights into the dynamics of mouse neural tube closure revealed by time-lapse imaging.

The use of time-lapse imaging to study neural tube closure in mouse embryos has provided unexpected insights into the complex morphogenetic processes involved. When neural tube closure is disrupted, it leads to neural tube defects (NTDs), which are among the most common structural birth defects in humans, associated with long-term disabilities and death. This review explores the growing body of research on time-lapse imaging experiments conducted in mice, emphasizing discoveries of the dynamic cellular movements and changes that enable neural tube formation. Advances in mouse embryo culture an

Trans-Sacral Epiduroscopic Ho:YAG Laser Ablation of the Ligamentum Flavum in a Live Pig.

INTRODUCTION: For the aging population, surgery for lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) requires minimally invasive procedures. Recently, trans-sacral epiduroscopic laser decompression for lumbar disc herniation has been reported with good results. In this study, we devised a new method to perform trans-sacral epiduroscopic laser ablation of the ligamentum flavum (LF), known to be the major cause of LSCS. Using a live pig, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and drawbacks of this procedure. METHODS: Using an epiduroscope, we observed intra-spinal canal structures and then examin

Health and Art (HEART): Integrating Science and Art to Fight COVID-19.

Netting individuals separated from each other by vast distances; the present condition of COVID-19 needs art and its extraordinary capacity to connect human beings and integrate scientific disciplines. We can predict that the COVID-19 pandemic would leave the mind lonely and vulnerable to diseases, for, on the one hand, the COVID-19 pandemic and related problems, in particular social isolation, are itself stressor. On the other hand, studies confirm the potential of COVID-19 to involve the central nervous system by affecting the immune system, either directly or indirectly. The COVID-19 condit

Visualizing non infectious and infectious Anopheles gambiae blood feedings in naive and saliva-immunized mice.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles gambiae is a major vector of malaria and lymphatic filariasis. The arthropod-host interactions occurring at the skin interface are complex and dynamic. We used a global approach to describe the interaction between the mosquito (infected or uninfected) and the skin of mammals during blood feeding. METHODS: Intravital video microscopy was used to characterize several features during blood feeding. The deposition and movement of Plasmodium berghei sporozoites in the dermis were also observed. We also used histological techniques to analyze the impact of infected and uninfec
