Prospective Evaluation of a Topical Botanical Skin Care Regimen on Mild to Moderate Facial and Truncal Acne and Mood.

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory condition that can be associated with profound psychosocial impacts. Conventional treatment includes topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and antimicrobials, and some may cause irritation and skin dryness. In this 8-week open-label study, we examined the effects of a botanical skin care regimen (Codex Labs Shaant Balancing regimen) on mild to moderate facial and truncal acne. Twenty-four male and female subjects between the ages of 12 and 45 years were assessed for eligibility, 20 were enrolled, and 15 completed all study visits. Facial and truncal acne l…

A Double-Blinded, Randomized, Vehicle-Controlled Study of the Efficacy of Moisturizer Containing Licochalcone A, Decanediol, L-Carnitine, and Salicylic Acid for Prevention of Acne Relapse in Asian Population.

Many topical agents are available for treating the acute phase of acne; however, few agents have been proven beneficial during the maintenance phase. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of moisturizer containing licochalcone A, 1,2-decanediol, L-carnitine, and salicylic acid during the maintenance phase of mild to moderate acne in Thai patients. Methods. One hundred and ten patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were initially treated with a fixed combination of adapalene 0.1%/benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gel once daily for 8 weeks. Fifty patients who achieved at least 50% reduction …

The management of acne vulgaris in primary care: a cohort study of consulting and prescribing patterns using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink.

BACKGROUND: Effective management of acne vulgaris in primary care involves support (usually provided over a number of consultations) and pre … being for 2 months or less. Prescribing rates for lymecycline and topical combined clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide increased substantially between 2004 and 2013. There were no important changes in consultation rates between 2004 and 2013. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that patients with acne are receiving a suboptimal initial choice of ARMs, longitudinal care …

Systematic review on the rapidity of the onset of action of topical treatments in the therapy of mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris.

The time until a patient achieves a relevant improvement during the treatment of a skin disease is important for selecting a therapy, but ha … dependently by two investigators. With respect to inflammatory lesions, different concentrations of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) or adapalene did not seem to influence the TOA. BPO seemed to act more quickly than isotretinoin and tretinoin. Adapalene showed a shorter TOA than isotretinoin. Conflicting results were seen when comparing adapalene with tretinoin, with a ten …

Combination therapy with retinaldehyde (0.1%) glycolic acid (6%) and efectiose (0.1%) in mild to moderate acne vulgaris during the period of sun exposure--efficacy and skin tolerability.

OBJECTIVES: Acne vulgaris is the most common disease of the adolescence age (70-94%). Main topical treatments for acne vulgaris are retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics in mono or combination therapy. Topical retinoids, some antibiotics and antiseptics although effective on acne lesions, can due photosensitivity or make the skin more sensitive to the sun. How patients experience and manage dryness and irritation from acne treatment.

BACKGROUND: Products that may cause irritation are widely used to treat acne. Irritation has the potential to reduce treatment adherence. How patients manage irritation and dryness is not well characterized. A randomised study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of four topical medications individually and in combination to treat grade I acne vulgaris which is characterised by mild lesions (< 10 in one side of face) consisting of predominantly comedones with occasional pustules in oily skin. Maintaining the inclusion and exclusion criteria 100 patients were selected and divided into 5 groups to receive different topical drugs at random basis in the dermatology OPD. An expert view on the treatment of acne with systemic antibiotics and/or oral isotretinoin in the light of the new European recommendations.

In 2003 the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products amended the summary product characteristics for oral isotretinoin to st … initial combination regimen with systemic antibiotics and topical treatments (topical retinoids +/- benzoyl peroxide). However, the members emphasized that a number of prognostic factors, as well as psychosocial morbidity should be taken into account when choosing the regimen and that these factors may influence the use of oral isotretinoin as first line therapy.

Short-term combination therapy and long-term relapse prevention in the treatment of severe acne vulgaris.

Few long-term treatment regimens for severe acne vulgaris have been investigated in clinical trials. Data were combined from two consecutive, randomized, double-blind, controlled studies to evaluate the efficacy, safety and subject satisfaction of four nine-month regimens in severe acne vulgaris treatment. Subjects were first randomized to receive doxycycline (DCN) and adapalene 0.1% - benzoyl peroxide 2.5% (A/BPO) or vehicle once daily for 12 weeks. Subjects who had at least 50% global improvement were subsequently randomized to receive A/BPO or its vehicle once daily for 24 weeks. Over nine …

What's new in acne? An analysis of systematic reviews published in 2009-2010.

This review highlights clinically important findings about acne treatment identified in nine systematic reviews published or indexed in the period March 2009 to February 2010. A systematic review of dietary influences on acne suggested that a possible role of dietary factors in acne cannot be dismissed, as the studies to date have not been sufficiently large or robust. Another review looked at benzoyl peroxide, which may be enjoying a comeback because of increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics, and suggested that there was a lack of evidence that stronger preparations were more effectiv…

Improvement of cystic fibrosis during treatment with isotretinoin.

A 15-year-old boy with a history significant for multiple respiratory infections since birth presented for evaluation of acne vulgaris. He was initially prescribed doxycycline, topical tretinoin, and topical clindamycin solution, with the later addition of a benzoyl peroxide preparation to his regimen. The patient returned 6 months later after having been diagnosed with CF (cystic fibrosis) by sweat testing and genetic testing. His skin condition had not responded adequately to prior therapy, so all acne medications were discontinued. The 84-kg patient was started on 80 mg (0.95 mg/kg/d) of is…

[Gram-negative bacteria folliculitis].

Gram-negative folliculitis was first described in 1968 and had since given rise to numerous publications. To our knowledge, no case has yet been published in France, although we observed 6 of them in 12 months. Between March, 1985 and March, 1986, samples of pus for bacteriological examination were obtained from all our patients with acnea vulgaris resistant to the standard treatment (i.e. oral tetracycline combined with topical applications of tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide), thus enabling us to detect patients who had a Gram-negative bacillus (GNB) in at least one pustule. Inflammatory and pa…
