Being broken: A qualitative study exploring unexpected death in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and the family experience of care.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child is a catastrophic event, and to experience this loss within the complex environment of a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) can be highly traumatic for parents. With current bereavement literature heavily focused on children with known life-limiting conditions, the unique grief experience of unexpected child death is poorly understood. AIM: The aim of this study was to increase understanding of bereaved family members' experience of care in a PICU after the unexpected death of their child. METHODS: Two focus groups and two interviews were conducted with ad…

Sharing loss online: Social media as a tool for navigating stillbirth grief.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth has profound implications for parents and families, including trauma and prolonged grief. Research indicates that social support is pivotal for parents bereaved by perinatal loss. However, there is limited research considering women's experiences of informal online support following stillbirth loss specifically. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of women living in Australia who engaged with informal online support following stillbirth. METHOD: In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 women aged 29 to 45 years (Mage = 3

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of MDD and CG among bereaved parents of deceased pediatric cancer patients in Cameroon. This cross-sectional study included parents of deceased pediatric cancer patients treated at Mbingo Baptist Hospital between 2015 and 2022. Multivariable stepwise logistic regression identified predictors of MDD and CG. The prevalence o

[A Clinical Case of Grief Hallucination through the Mourning Work Normal Grief and Spiritual Care].

Auditory or visual hallucinations of a deceased person are well known in the normal course of the bereavement process. According to DSM-5, this symptom is included in the associated features supporting diagnosis of persistent complex bereavement disorder. In Japan, however, little is known about these hallucinatory experiences during grieving, and few reports on their prevalence are available. Here, we have reported a clinical case of such experiences following the loss of a spouse. A 66-year-old patient presented to the outpatient department with insomnia after her husband's death. She was pr…

What do we know about needs for help after suicide in different parts of the world? A phenomenological perspective.

BACKGROUND: "A person's death is not only an ending: it is also a beginning - for the survivors. Indeed, in the case of suicide, the largest public health problem is neither the prevention of suicide (...), nor the management of attempts (...), but the alleviation of the effects of stress in the survivor-victims of suicidal deaths, whose lives are forever changed and who, over a period of years, numbers in the millions ..." (Edwin S. Shneidman, 1973). AIMS: As there is no doubt that suicide postvention should be given a more prominent position on the agenda than is presently the case, this pa

Long-term effects of losing a spouse or child in a motor vehicle crash.

In this article we examine the long-term effects of the sudden, unexpected loss of a spouse or child. In the spouse study, interviews were conducted with 39 individuals who had lost a spouse in a motor vehicle crash 4 to 7 years ago and with 39 matched controls. In the parent study, interviews were conducted with 41 parents who had lost a child in a crash and with 41 matched controls. Control respondents were matched to bereaved respondents case-by-case on the basis of sex, age, income, education, and number and ages of children. Significant differences between bereaved spouses and controls we

Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia after the loss of a child to cancer: Randomized controlled trial.

Bereaved individuals often experience sleep problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility and preliminary effects of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-i) in bereaved parents. Parents were randomized to iCBT-i (n = 10) or an active control group (n = 11). Primary outcome (insomnia) and secondary outcomes (prolonged grief, depression, posttraumatic stress, and grief rumination) were assessed pre- and post-treatment, with 9- and 18-month follow-ups. Feasibility was assessed post-treatment and one month later. Most parents reported positive effects of

Lived Experiences of Women Navigating End-of-Life Caregiving and Parenting During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the burden on informal caregivers, particularly those with dual caregiving roles. This grounded theory study explores the lived experiences of women who simultaneously cared for a hospitalized family member at the end of life and for minor children during the pandemic. We aimed to examine how the intersection of these roles influenced women's experiences during caregiving and into bereavement. We analyzed 11 qualitative interviews with bereaved women caregivers in Toronto, Canada, who simultaneously cared for minor children and a dying family member during the…

Walking beside grief.

Grief is universal, yet very isolating. Every culture has rituals, every family its stories of loss, and every individual their private struggles with absence. Very often, grief is treated as something to be repaired, resolved, replaced, or moved beyond. Yet what the bereaved most need is not solutions, but companionship-someone willing to notice, listen, and stay present. This article reflects on bereavement companionship through stories shared during monthly workshops that I lead. The narratives-a child mourning a lost pen that symbolised her absent father, a woman grieving the death of a ne…

Legacy Building in Pediatric End-of-Life Care through Innovative Use of a Digital Stethoscope.

Culturally Embedded, Gendered, and Iterative Grief Among Adult Sons Following Paternal Loss: A Qualitative Study.

The death of a father is a major transition for adult sons, particularly in cultures emphasizing filial duty and masculine norms. This qualitative study explored how 24 bereaved sons in Chinese society experienced paternal loss using in-depth interviews and reflexive thematic analysis. Findings revealed a non-linear, iterative grieving process: sons assumed family responsibilities, maintained relational bonds, managed paradoxical emotions, reflected on father-son relationships, and engaged in recursive coping. Grief was culturally mediated, relational, and identity-transforming, highlighting t

Postmortem tissue donation for research: a positive opportunity?

Previous research using human brain tissue has increased the understanding of many brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Creutzfeldt Jakob disease. However, there are other conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, which remain poorly understood and which require further investigation. The ongoing decline in the consented postmortem rate poses a threat to tissue collections and, consequently, future research. In the setting of the new Human Tissue legislation the authors set out to ascertain whether families recently and suddenly bereaved were willing to grant authorization for tissue
