I am in the passenger seat of my own body: a qualitative interview study of the relationship between binge eating and concurrent problematic alcohol use.

BACKGROUND: The association between binge eating and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) has been demonstrated in genetic, population-based, and clinical studies. Individuals with binge eating report more binge drinking and heavier alcohol consumption than those with eating disorders (EDs) without binge eating. Co-occurring EDs and AUDs are linked to higher levels of ED symptoms, depression, anxiety, and more severe psychosocial impairment compared with EDs alone. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how adults with concurrent binge eating and perceived alcohol problems experience these t…

Adolescent binge alcohol exposure accelerates Alzheimer's disease-associated basal forebrain neuropathology through proinflammatory HMGB1 signaling.

Human studies suggest that heavy alcohol use may be an etiological factor contributing to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology. Both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and AD share common underlying neuropathology, including proinflammatory high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1)-mediated neuroimmune signaling and basal forebrain cholinergic neuron degeneration. Adolescent onset of binge drinking represents a significant risk factor for later development of an AUD, and accumulating evidence suggests that adolescent initiation of heavy alcohol use induces HMGB1 signaling and causes dege…

Drinking and smoking patterns amongst women attending an antenatal clinic--I. Before pregnancy.

This paper provides basic epidemiological data on smoking and drinking patterns before pregnancy amongst 1117 pregnant women attending a Lon … ge weekly alcohol consumption was related to both the usual frequency and amount drunk, but also to binge drinking, beverage choice and combination, and reasons for drinking. In general, drinking was frequent and light. Those women who drank more per week tended to drink more frequently than those in the lower weekly consumption bands. Fourteen per cent of the s …

Social motives for drinking in students should not be neglected in efforts to decrease problematic drinking.

High heavy drinking prevalence persists in students. Recently, drinking motivation received a lot of attention as an important determinant. … gressions tested relationships between motives and problematic drinking (>weekly drinking, ≥monthly binge drinking and being at risk for problematic drinking by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT]). Social motives had the highest prevalence, followed by enhancement, coping and conformity motives. Men engaged more in problematic drinking and rep …

Drinking and Obesity: Alcoholic Liver Disease/Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Interactions.

Alcohol and obesity are the main risk factors for alcoholic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), respectively, and they frequently coexist. There are considerable synergistic interaction effects between hazardous alcohol use and obesity-associated metabolic abnormalities in the development and progression of fatty liver disease. Intermittent binge-drinking has been shown to promote steatohepatitis from obesity-related steatosis, and binge-drinking is associated with progression to cirrhosis even when average alcohol intake is within the currently used criteria for a NAFL

Individual and sex differences in frontloading behavior and approach- avoidance conflict preference predict addiction-like ethanol seeking in rats.

Recent research has identified sex-dependent links between risk taking behaviors, approach-avoidance bias and alcohol intake. However, preclinical studies have typically assessed alcohol drinking using a singular dimension of intake (i.e. drinking level), failing to capture the multidimensional pattern of aberrant alcohol-seeking observed in alcohol use disorder. In this study, we sought to further explore individual and sex differences in the relationship between approach-avoidance bias, frontloading (bingeing and onset skew) and multiple addiction-like indices of ethanol seeking that include

Dorsomedial Striatum Calcium Permeable AMPA Receptors in the Development of Aversion-Resistant Alcohol Drinking.

RATIONALE: Alcohol use disorder is defined by drinking alcohol despite knowledge of negative consequences, often referred to as aversion-resistant drinking (ARD). The dorsomedial (DMS) and dorsolateral striatum (DLS) are necessary for goal-directed and habitual action selection, respectively. Leading hypotheses posit that once drug use becomes compulsive, DMS dependence degrades while DLS dependence increases. This shift may be mediated by changes in synaptic weights from glutamatergic inputs. OBJECTIVES: Using a combination of western-blot, micro-injections, and ex-vivo electrophysiology, we

Escalation of intake under intermittent ethanol access in diverse mouse genotypes.

Experimental animals offered continuous 24-hour free choice access to ethanol rarely display voluntary ethanol consumption at levels sufficient to induce intoxication or to engender dependence. One of the simplest ways to increase voluntary ethanol intake is to impose temporal limitations on ethanol availability. Escalation of ethanol intake has been observed in both rats and mice under a variety of different schedules of alternating ethanol access and deprivation. Although such effects have been observed in a variety of rat and mouse genotypes, little is known concerning possible genetic corr

Long-term drinking stability in the open-access self-administration monkey model.

The Non-Human Primate (NHP) model for the study of Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) as developed in our laboratories is critical to our understanding of the pathophysiology of voluntary, chronic, ethanol consumption. Previous work in this model established categories of ethanol consumption that parallel reported categories of human consumption across a spectrum spanning low drinking, binge drinking, heavy drinking, and very heavy drinking, albeit at generally higher daily intakes across categories than documented in people. Original categories assigned to ethanol consumption patterns were establish…
