Alginate-modified biochar derived from Ca(II)-impregnated biomass: Excellent anti-interference ability for Pb(II) removal.

A novel biochar modified with sodium alginate was prepared using Ca(II)-impregnated biomass, and used to remove metals from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) was estimated to be 1.225 mmol/g (253.6 mg/g), which is far more than that of most adsorbents. Moreover, the modified biochar had a great anti-interference ability for effective removal of Pb(II) from multi-metal system. The biochar still had strong ability to adsorb Pb(II) when the initial concentrations of interfering ions were 5 times higher than that of Pb(II). Functional groups and minerals of the biochar …

Catalytic biorefining of plant biomass to non-pyrolytic lignin bio-oil and carbohydrates through hydrogen transfer reactions.

Through catalytic hydrogen transfer reactions, a new biorefining method results in the isolation of depolymerized lignin--a non-pyrolytic lignin bio-oil--in addition to pulps that are amenable to enzymatic hydrolysis. Compared with organosolv lignin, the lignin bio-oil is highly susceptible to further hydrodeoxygenation under low-severity conditions and therefore establishes a unique platform for lignin valorization by heterogeneous catalysis. Overall, the potential of a catalytic biorefining method designed from the perspective of lignin utilization is reported.

Theoretical Study on the Reaction Mechanism of Closed-Loop Recyclability of a Biomass-Derived Epoxy Resin Thermoset by Methanolysis.

Epoxy resin thermosets (ERTs) represent a significant category of polymeric materials. However, ERTs have high cross-linking and are difficult to decompose, leading to unacceptable environmental pollution. It is evident that there is a critical need for the development of inherently recyclable ERTs derived from renewable resources. In addition, the feasibility of related reaction mechanisms of the recyclable routes needs to be investigated. In this work, the potential energy surface information for 13 reaction channels was obtained using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311+G-(d,p) lev

Effects of straw return and nitrogen fertilizer application on photosynthesis, biomass, yield and economic benefits of kidney bean.

Kidney bean is an important edible legume crop characterized by a short growth period, strong stress resistance, and wide adaptability. Straw return combined with rational nitrogen fertilizer application is a crucial agronomic measure for improving kidney bean yield and economic performance. However, quantitative analyses of their combined effects on the photosynthesis, biomass, yield, and economic benefits of kidney bean remain insufficient. This study investigated the effects of two straw return methods and four nitrogen fertilizer rates (0, 45, 90, and 135 kg ha⁻¹) on chlorophyll content, p…

Unraveling an Unexpected Trade-Off: The NOx-N2O Evolution and Chemical Mechanism for Co-Combustion of Coal and Biomass.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) reduction is of great significance for further reducing both PM2.5 and ground-level ozone concentrations. Controlling nitrogen oxide emissions from coal-biomass cocombustion is an urgent challenge. This study develops a novel standalone Chemical Reactor Network (CRN) model to mechanistically elucidate the distinct nitrogen transformation pathways in cocombustion environments. This work reveals an enhanced bidirectional NO-N2O interconversion in the dilute phase, mediated through both direct NCO/NH radical routes and indirect pathways involving NO2 intermediates. The key d…

Increasing CO2 concentration promoted the biomass accumulation but decreased the mineral nutrition and forage quality of Leymus chinensis.

The global atmospheric CO2 concentration is predicted to increase from the current approximate 450 to 700 ppm by end of this century. To evaluate its potential impact on sustainability of grassland, Leymus chinensis, the dominant wild forage species in the eastern Eurasian Steppe, was cultivated in two growth chambers for a month with ambient 450 ppm (aCO2) as the control and elevated 700 ppm CO2 (eCO2) as simulation of the future respectively. The eCO2 increased the aboveground biomass, net photosynthesis rate and contents of carbohydrates, as well as the Mn contents in the leaves. The eCO2 d…
