Health inequalities among non-lesbian, gay and bisexual sexual minority adolescents: Findings from a national UK cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority individuals who identify with sexual identities other than lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) have increased risk for poor mental health. However, most health research focuses on LGB groups often excluding other sexual minority identities. This study examined 1) sociodemographic characteristics and 2) a range of health indicators and health-related behaviours in other sexual minority identities ([OSI], including those who do not disclose their sexual identity) and in comparison, to LGB and heterosexual peers using data from the UK-wide Millennium Cohort Study. METHODS: T

In pursuit of intimacy: lived experiences of intimacy among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men during COVID-19.

The COVID-19 crisis gave rise to measures such as physical distancing, sheltering in place, and social bubbles that impacted sexual lives profoundly. One group particularly badly impacted by COVID-19 containment, and at risk of sexual and mental health consequences as a result, comprised gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men -- many of whom were more likely to live alone, to have had multiple partners before the epidemic, and some of whom were lacking in peer support for their mental health. This study investigated how members of this group living in Flanders (Belgium) experienced

Modeling the Potential Impact of Scaling Up Event-Driven PrEP Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men who have Sex with Men.

BACKGROUND: Event-driven preexposure prophylaxis/PrEP (EDP), or PrEP taken around the time of sex, could be a preferred option over daily PrEP among cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). However, recommendations for EDP versus daily dosing require consideration of optimal strategies for HIV prevention based on heterogeneous behavioral and biological PrEP indications. METHODS: We used network-based mathematical HIV transmission modeling to understand the potential population-level impact of implementing EDP alongside daily PrEP using the 2-1-1 dosing schedule: 2 p

The Italian Version of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS): Validation Among Mental Health Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience substantial health inequalities, and clinical competence among healthcare providers is a key determinant of equitable care. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS) is a validated instrument for assessing SGM-related clinical competence, but no Italian version has been available. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Italian LGBT-DOCSS among mental health professionals. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to clinicians and trainees ac

Acceptability of HIV self-testing among sexual health service providers and Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, and queer men in Ontario, Canada.

In 2020, Health Canada approved the INSTI human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) self-test. Adoption and distribution of alternative HIV testing interventions, like self-testing, are essential in meeting the United Nations 95-95-95 goals. We explored the acceptability of HIV self-testing among sexual health service providers and Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, and queer men (2SGBQM). Between 2020 and 2021, peer researchers conducted virtual focus groups (13) and interviews (18) with providers (n = 18) and 2SGBQM (n = 38) across Ontario, Canada, and analysed data using community-based participatory rese

Trends in gonorrhoea testing and incidence among gay and bisexual men in Australia during PrEP implementation: an analysis of surveillance data (2012-2023).

OBJECTIVES: Gonorrhoea incidence is increasing globally, with gay and bisexual men (GBM) over-represented in notifications. Changes in behaviour, sexual networks and screening practices associated with HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and treatment-as-prevention may influence gonorrhoea transmission. We describe trends in gonorrhoea testing and incidence among GBM over 12 years spanning PrEP implementation in Australia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using surveillance data from 67 sexual health and general practice clinics between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2023. F

Preferences for HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis among Gay, Bisexual, and Men Who Have Sex with Men in China: a Discrete Choice Experiment.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). This study investigates PrEP usage and preferences among Chinese GBMSM and how key attributes influence their choices using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). Six PrEP attributes were evaluated: dosing frequency, dispensing venue, side effects, effectiveness, follow-up frequency, and extra services. From January to November 2022, a face-to-face survey was conducted among 1186 GBMSM in Xi'an, China. Multi- and mixed-logit models assessed preferences and heterogen

COI barcoding can distinguish bisexual and parthenogenetic populations of Haemaphysalis longicornis in Japan: Revisiting methods with SNP analysis as another possible method.

Haemaphysalis longicornis, the Asian long-horned tick, is an important vector for various infectious diseases, such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) and Japanese spotted fever. In this species, a triploid parthenogenetic reproductive form occurs along with a diploid bisexual form. Several approaches have been used to distinguish these two groups, including the presence/absence of males in the population, karyotyping, flow cytometry, and most recently, mitochondrial phylogeny. Mitochondrial gene (COI) barcoding has also been casually used, although its validity has not been

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clinical competence of health professionals in Poland and Spain: results of the health exclusion research in Europe (HERE) study.

INTRODUCTION: Health disparities experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals have been partially attributed to healthcare professionals' lack of cultural competence in addressing their specific needs. This study aimed to assess the differences in competencies and preparedness among health professionals from Poland and Spain when working with LGBT patients. METHODOLOGY: Data were collected between June and August 2024 through a cross-sectional survey involving 673 health professionals (Mage = 33.54, SD = 9.74; 61.5% female), including 273 participants from Spain a

Military service and health-related quality of life among gay and bisexual prostate cancer survivors: Results from the Restore-2 study.

INTRODUCTION: There are notable disparities in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between gay and bisexual men (GBM) and heterosexual patients with prostate cancer (PCa); however, the role of past military service is unclear. This study examines HRQOL differences in GBM PCa survivors based on reported military service history. METHODS: We used data from the 24-month follow-up survey of the Restore-2 study, a clinical trial which evaluated a rehabilitation programme for GBM PCa survivors. PCa HRQOL was assessed using the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC-50) and the Functional

Comparative microRNAs profile of Schistosoma japonicum male worms derived from single-sex and bisexual infections: Implications of the multifunctional role of microRNA.

Schistosoma japonicum is a dioecious parasite that requires constant pairing between male and female worms for female maturation and egg production. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play crucial roles in regulating various biological processes, including parasite development and host-pathogen interactions, but their functions in schistosomes remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) between mated male (MM) and single-sex male (SM) worms to gain insights into their regulatory roles in schistosome reproduction. Total RNA was extracted from 28-day-old

Understanding associations between sexual identity change and the mental health of lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United Kingdom through longitudinal survey.

While the existence of poorer mental health among lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) populations is well-established, most research does not acknowledge sexual identity shifts when quantifying disparities. This study begins to fill this gap by examining associations between sexual identity change from 2011 to 2023 and current psychological wellbeing and mental health diagnoses self-reported between 2021 and 2023 in the United Kingdom. We utilized a nationally-representative sample of 25,141 respondents aged 16 and older who completed Understanding Society, a longitudinal household survey, in the

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptomology among gay, bisexual, and other sexually minoritized cisgender men in the United States: A latent class analysis.

In the United States, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) disparities among sexually minoritized men (SMM) are well-documented, but diverse PTSD symptom manifestations and related vulnerabilities in this group are understudied. From October 2020 to January 2021, we collected cross-sectional demographic, HIV status, sexual behavior, and mental health data from 6319 trauma-exposed SMM in the American Men's Internet Survey. We used latent class analysis, multinomial logistic regression, and the Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars method to identify PTSD symptom classes, associations with class membership, and

Optimizing HIV Partner Services for Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Previously Diagnosed With HIV: A Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV Partner Services (HIV-PS) is a vital strategy for identifying and linking individuals to treatment and prevention; however, its population-level impact has been limited. This study investigated the potential impact of expanding HIV-PS to include previously diagnosed individuals and a broader sexual partner network in reducing HIV incidence among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). METHODS: Stochastic network models were used to simulate HIV and bacterial sexually transmitted infection transmission within male same-sex partnerships in Atlanta. Two primar

Stigma and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (and additional identities) (LGBTQ+) parent socialization self-efficacy: Mediating roles of identity and community.

In the United States, cultural forces have led to the stigmatization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (and additional identities) (LGBTQ+) parenthood. However, pushing back against this stigmatization, developing a positive LGBTQ+ identity, and investing in one's LGBTQ+ community may inform empowering narratives of future parenthood and related constructs, such as LGBTQ+ parent socialization. Perceived self-efficacy related to preparation for bias (i.e., discussions of discrimination, prejudice, or bias-based bullying) socialization is likely associated with an individual's ow

A systematic review of the prevalence and associated factors of mental health conditions among lesbian, bisexual, and other sexual minority women in Southeast Asia.

The present review explored the prevalence and factors of mental health conditions among lesbian, bisexual, and other sexual minority women (LBSW) in Southeast Asia. It found that the rates of significant depression and depressive symptoms range from 10% to 93.2%, with a median of 27.7%. This wide range can be due to a study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, which found elevated depression, stress, and anxiety rates. Studies also highlight high levels of sadness, hopelessness, sleep and eating problems, fatigue, and suicidal thoughts among LBSW. Suicide rates indicate that LBSW have high

Variations in HIV Prevention Coverage in Subpopulations of Australian Gay and Bisexual Men, 2017-2021: Implications for Reducing Inequities in the Combination Prevention Era.

Using repeated behavioural surveillance data collected from gay and bisexual men (GBM) across Australia, we assessed trends in HIV prevention coverage (the level of 'safe sex' achieved in the population by the use of effective prevention methods, including condoms, pre-exposure prophylaxis [PrEP] and having an undetectable viral load). We stratified these trends by age, country of birth/recency of arrival, sexual identity, and the proportion of gay residents in the participant's suburb. Among 25,865 participants with casual male partners, HIV prevention coverage increased from 69.8% in 2017 to
