BACKGROUND: The invasive nature of surgery, with its increased exposure to blood, means that during surgery there is a high risk of transfer of pathogens. Pathogens can be transferred through contact between surgical patients and the surgical team, resulting in post-operative or blood borne infections in patients or blood borne infections in the surgical team. Both patients and the surgical team need to be protected from this risk. This risk can be reduced by implementing protective barriers such as wearing surgical gloves. Wearing two pairs of surgical gloves, triple gloves, glove liners or c

The purpose of this collective review is to discuss management of operating room personnel who have had occupational exposure to blood and other body fluids that might contain hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). HBV postexposure prophylaxis includes starting hepatitis B vaccine series in any susceptible unvaccinated operating room personnel who sustain an exposure to blood or body fluid during surgery. Postexposure prophylaxis with hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) is an important considerat

The first diagnostic kits utilizing the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique were developed in mid-eighties, and since then, this technique has become an increasingly important tool for screening multiple samples of blood or serum for presence of antibodies to various infectious pathogens, especially human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in blood banks. However, most of the commercial diagnostic kits currently available in the market are too expensive, hence not easily affordable in most Diagnostic Laboratories. We designed an ELISA kit for diagnosis of HIV and compared it with som

Recently it has become urgent to establish a risk control system against emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Many of the emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases such as AIDS and viral hepatitis, are induced by viral infection via blood. The main causative agents of blood-born viral infection are hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human T cell leukemia virus type1 (HTLV1), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human parvovirus B19. They play the main role in viral hospital infections. The risk of them being transmi

Blood-borne infection associated with injection drug use is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Over the last decade, HIV infection and its clinical sequelae have had a significant impact on research and interventions involving injecting drug users (IDUs) in the United States and elsewhere. Discussed are some of the major intervention options for reducing blood-borne infections in general and HIV in particular. The use of multiple interventions is considered within the community context in which both IDUs and service providers operate. Intervention options discussed include treatme

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection of Legionella spp. in clinical bronchial fluid samples was constructed. The assay could detect a 375 bp fragment of the 16S RNA gene, equivalent to 10 cfu in simulated clinical bronchial fluid and blood samples. Seven clinically relevant Legionella spp. involving 12 serogroups produced a positive signal, whereas three Legionella spp. and none of a panel of 26 bacterial strains produced a signal in the constructed assay. Investigation of bronchial fluid from 51 patients with clinically suspected Legionnaire's disease revealed the presenc

BACKGROUND: Syringe services programs (SSPs) aim to prevent the transmission of blood-borne pathogens, tissue infections, and overdose among people who use drugs (PWUD). This article describes the implementation of SSPs at 2 US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers.
OBSERVATIONS: SSPs can increase access to sterile equipment, promote safe disposal, reduce health care costs, and improve patient access to care. Despite these developments, SSPs remain limited. Established SSPs at the Alaska VA Healthcare System and VA Southern Oregon Healthcare System have allowed for quality harm …

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne infectious disease with a high mortality rate. Co-infections with SFTS virus (SFTSV) and other pathogens can exacerbate the condition, leading to rapidly progressive multiple organ failure. We reported a case of SFTS complicated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aspergillus fumigatus. Despite active symptomatic supportive treatment (including anti-virus, anti-infection, anti-antifungal treatment, liver protection, and other advanced life supports), the patient's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to multiple organ failure. The

Over 170 million patients worldwide are chronically infected with Hepatitis C virus (HCV); making it a globally important infection. Dentists constantly handle sharp instruments infected with biological fluids and are therefore considered at high-risk of contracting HCV infection. Needle-stick injuries seem to be the most common route of exposure to blood-borne pathogens in dental practice. Moreover, endodontist's constant use of sharp instruments such as endodontic files with limited operative vision in a small working field (i.e. root canal system) increases their risk of exposure to infecti…

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne pathogens cause emerging zoonoses, and include fastidious organisms such as Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Because of their obligate intracellular nature, methods for mutagenesis and transformation have not been available.
RESULTS: To facilitate genetic manipulation, we transformed A. phagocytophilum (Ap) to express a green fluorescent protein (GFP) with the Himar1 transposase system and selection with the clinically irrelevant antibiotic spectinomycin.
CONCLUSION: These transformed bacteria (GFP/Ap) grow at normal rates and are brightly fluorescent in human, monkey, and t

Canine vector-borne pathogens (CVBPs) pose a major challenge in shelter medicine, yet data from shelter populations in Vietnam remain unknown. This study determined the prevalence, and risk factors of CVBPs in shelter dogs in northern Vietnam. Blood samples from 300 apparently healthy dogs from three shelters in Hanoi were screened by PCR for Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Rickettsia spp., and Mycoplasma spp. Representative positive amplicons underwent Sanger sequencing and BLAST analysis. Sequence analysis showed 96.07-100% identity with reference strains, with phylogenetic trees confirmin

Infective endocarditis is a severe disease with high mortality. Despite a global trend towards an increase in staphylococcal aetiologies, in older patients and a decrease in viridans streptococci, we have observed in recent studies great epidemiologic disparities between countries. In order to evaluate these differences among Mediterranean countries, we performed a PubMed search of infective endocarditis case series for each country. Data were available for 13 of the 18 Mediterranean countries. Despite great differences in diagnostic strategies, we could classify countries into three groups. I

Zika virus (ZIKV), a relative newcomer from the flavivirus group that includes dengue, Japanese encepahalitis and yellow fever, is one of the emerging pathogens that is fast transcending geographical boundaries. It is a vector-borne disease transmitted by the same Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which cause dengue and chikungunya. In addition to the vector-mediated transmission of Zika fever, probable human-to-human transmission through exchange of body fluids, including sexual and perinatal transmission and through blood transfusion, makes containment of this new entity more challenging.

Deer are important blood hosts for feeding Ixodes ricinus ticks but they do not support transmission of many tick-borne pathogens, so acting as dead-end transmission hosts. Mathematical models show their role as tick amplifiers, but also suggest that they dilute pathogen transmission, thus reducing infection prevalence. Empirical evidence for this is conflicting: experimental plots with deer removal (i.e. deer exclosures) show that the effect depends on the size of the exclosure. Here we present simulations of dynamic models that take into account different tick stages, and several host specie

BACKGROUND: Sepsis within the first 3 days of life remains a leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, few studies have addressed the epidemiology of sepsis in late preterm and term neonates, particularly in Asia. We aimed to estimate the epidemiology of early-onset sepsis (EOS) in neonates born at ≥35 0/7 weeks' gestation in Korea.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in neonates with proven EOS born at ≥35 0/7 weeks' gestation from 2009 to 2018 at seven university hospitals. EOS was defined as identifying bacteria from a blood culture within 72 hours after birth.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) is an arthropod-borne virus, an etiologic agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), an infection involving the central nervous system. The disease is endemic in a large region in Eurasia where it is transmitted mainly by Ixodes ricinus in Europe and I. persulcatus ticks in Asia. This is the most important tick-transmitted arbovirus of human pathogenicity in Europe. The Białowieza Primeval Forest is a well-known endemic focus of tick-borne encephalitis. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of tickborne encephalitis vi

The genome revolution is providing fresh insights into host and parasite genomes, and new tools are becoming available for examining host-parasite interactions at the proteome level. Technologies such as surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (SELDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) can be applied to discover biomarkers (alterations in both host and parasite proteomes) associated with parasitic diseases. Such biomarkers can represent host proteins, fragments of host proteins or parasite proteins that appear in body fluids or tissues following infection. Individual biomarkers or
