Body mass index and weight change in relation to triple-negative breast cancer survival.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of body mass index (BMI), weight change on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) prognosis in a population-based prospective cohort study. The current analysis included 518 participants diagnosed with TNBC in Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study. Weight at 1 year prior to cancer diagnosis, at diagnosis, and at 6, 18 and 36 months after cancer diagnosis and height at 6 months after cancer diagnosis were assessed. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated in relation to BMI and weight change using Cox proportional haz

Effects of smoking cessation on β-cell function, insulin sensitivity, body weight, and appetite.

OBJECTIVE: To stop smoking is commonly associated with significant weight gain, but the mechanisms for this are poorly understood. We assessed the effects of smoking cessation on body weight, insulin sensitivity, β-cell function, and appetite. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven long-term smokers (n=27; nine females/18 males, 28±1 years, 22.9±0.6 kg/m(2)) attending an ambulatory smoking cessation program in a community hospital in Vienna, Austria were examined at baseline (Visit A; still smoking) and after a minimum of 3 months of smoking abstinence (Visit B; n=14); relapsed smokers were not f…

The influence of maternal body mass index on fetal weight estimation in twin pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) is important in the management of high-risk pregnancies. The possibility that increased maternal body mass index (BMI) adversely affects EFW assessments in twin pregnancies is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal BMI on the accuracy of EFW assessments in twin gestations prospectively recruited for the ESPRiT (Evaluation of Sonographic Predictors of Restricted growth in Twins) study. STUDY DESIGN: One thousand one twin pair pregnancies were recruited. After exclusion, BMI, birthweights, and ultrasound

Body weight and the medial longitudinal foot arch: high-arched foot, a hidden problem?

UNLABELLED: This study had two objectives. First, to determine the prevalence of hollow (high-arched) and flat foot among primary school children in Cracow (Poland). Second, to evaluate the relationship between the type of medial longitudinal arch (MLA; determined by the Clarke's angle) and degree of fatness. The prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity was determined by means of IOTF cut-offs with respect to age and gender. A sample of 1,115 children (564 boys and 551 girls) aged between 3 and 13 years was analyzed. In all age groups, regardless of gender, high-arched foot was diagn

Postmortem heart weight: relation to body size and effects of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

BACKGROUND: Gender, body weight, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are all variables known to influence human heart weight. The impact of cancer is less studied, and the influence of age is not unequivocal. We aimed to describe the relationship between body size and heart weight in a large autopsy cohort and to compare heart weight in patients with cancer, CVD, and other diseases. METHODS AND RESULTS: Registered information, including cause of death, evidence of cancer and/or CVD, heart weight, body weight, and height, was extracted from the autopsy reports of 1410 persons (805 men, mean age 6…

Effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on body weight: a meta-analysis.

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), approved as glucose-lowering drugs for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, have also been shown to reduce body weight. An extensive Medline, Cochrane database, and Embase search for "exenatide," "liraglutide," "albiglutide," "semaglutide," and "lixisenatide" was performed, collecting all randomized clinical trials on humans up to December 15, 2011, with a duration of at least 24 weeks, comparing GLP-1 receptor agonists with either placebo or active drugs. Twenty two (7,859 patients) and 7 (2,416 patients) trials with available results on body…

Effects of naltrexone on food intake and body weight gain in olanzapine-treated rats.

Blockade of opioidergic neurotransmission contributes to reduction in body weight. However, how such blockade affects body weight gain (BWG) attributed to second generation antipsychotic agents (SGAs) has not yet been established. Here we examined the effects of an opioid receptor antagonist, naltrexone (NTX), on food intake and BWG associated with an SGA, olanzapine (OL). Four groups of Wistar Han IGS rats were treated for 28 days with either OL (2 mg/kg twice daily, intraperitoneal (IP)), a combination of OL (2 mg/kg twice daily, IP) + extended-release NTX (50 mg/kg, one-time, intramuscular …

Nuts improve diet quality compared to other energy-dense snacks while maintaining body weight.

Previous studies have reported that regular nut consumption reduces cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and does not promote weight gain despite the fact that nuts are energy-dense. However, no studies have investigated the body composition of those regularly consuming nuts compared to similar intakes of other snacks of equal energy density. This parallel study (n = 118) examined the effects of providing daily portions (~1100 kJ/d) of hazelnuts, chocolate, or potato crisps compared to a control group receiving no snacks for twelve weeks. Effects on body weight and composition, blood lipids and l…

Central amylin acts as an adiposity signal to control body weight and energy expenditure.

The pancreatic B-cell hormone amylin has been proposed to be both a satiation signal and an adiposity signal. The effects of peripheral amylin on energy balance are well investigated, but the effects of central amylin are less clear. We determined the effects of low doses of amylin administered into the 3rd cerebral ventricle (i3vt) on food intake, body weight and other indices of energy balance. Amylin (2 pmol/h) significantly lowered body weight compared to saline after 2 weeks of infusion, independent of whether prior body weight was decreased by fasting, increased by voluntary overfeeding …

Genetic analysis of metabolic traits in an intercross between body weight-selected chicken lines.

A network of four interacting loci has been reported previously to influence growth in two lines of chickens divergently selected for body weight at 56 days of age. Located on chromosomes 3 (Growth4), 4 (Growth6), 7 (Growth9), and 20 (Growth12), they explained nearly half of the difference in body weight at selection age between the two lines. The original study reported effects on body weight and fat deposition, but no attempts were made to explore the effects of the network on other phenotypes measured in the F(2) population. In this study we conducted further analyses to evaluate the specif…

Dietary tryptophan depletion according to body weight - a new treatment option in acute mania?

Decreased neurotransmission of serotonin (5-HT) was shown to be related to the development of depressive symptoms, whereas recent preliminary evidence suggests that acute mania may be related to a hyperserotonergic state. The reduction of central nervous 5-HT synthesis achieved by a new modification of the dietary rapid tryptophan depletion technique, with the relevant amino acids dosed according to body weight, is hypothesized by the authors to be a further option of treatment during acute mania, in particular in view of a decrease in adverse reactions, a reduced amount of amino acids needed …

Relationship between smoking status and body weight in a military population of young adults.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the association between smoking and body weight in a cohort of young U.S. Air Force recruits (mean age=20 years) enrolled in basic military training (N=35986). Twenty-two percent of recruits smoked daily prior to basic military training (n=8087) and were compared to never smokers, former smokers, and experimental or nondaily smokers. A three-way interaction among smoking status, gender and ethnicity suggested a small effect for daily smoking among White male recruits only and no significant differences for female recruits or members of any othe…

Smoking and body weight as markers of fitness for duty among U.S. military personnel.

BACKGROUND: Both tobacco and overweight present serious threats to public health. Although the military has targeted both health issues, only weight status is included in tests of fitness. This study contrasted the relative utility of body weight and smoking as markers for fitness for duty. METHODS: Using data from the 2002 Department of Defense Survey of Health-Related Behaviors among Military Personnel (N = 12,149; 24.7% female), troops were categorized according to weight (underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese) and smoking status (never smoker, former smoker, or current smoker)…
