Herd- and cow-level prevalence of digital dermatitis in the Netherlands and associated risk factors.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to reevaluate the prevalence of digital dermatitis (DD) and associated risk factors in The Netherlands. Between May 2002 and December 2003, information about the presence or absence of DD lesions and other claw disorders on the hind claws of dairy cows in The Netherlands was collected by 20 hoof trimmers during trimming of all dairy cows in 383 herds. A questionnaire was used to acquire information regarding management and housing. Additional information, such as parity, breed, and stage of lactation of the cows, was provided by the Dutch Herd Bo

Antifibrinolytic therapy for preventing oral bleeding in people on anticoagulants undergoing minor oral surgery or dental extractions.

BACKGROUND: Individuals on continuous treatment with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are at increased risk of bleeding complications during and after oral or dental procedures. Anticoagulant treatment is preferably continued at the same dose, since dose reduction or discontinuation of treatment is associated with an increased risk of thromboembolism. The use of haemostatic measures during or after the procedure (or both) could enable continuation of the oral anticoagulant treatment. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the efficacy of antifibrinolytic agents for p

Carotid endarterectomy for symptomatic carotid stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the most common cause of long-term disability. Severe narrowing (stenosis) of the carotid artery is an important cause of stroke. Surgical treatment (carotid endarterectomy) may reduce the risk of stroke, but carries a risk of operative complications. This is an update of a Cochrane Review, originally published in 1999, and most recently updated in 2017. OBJECTIVES: To determine the balance of benefit versus risk of endarterectomy plus best medical management compared with best medical management alone, in people with a recent symptom

Association between maternal and fetal characteristics and levator hiatal dimensions in the second stage of labor.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the pelvic floor hiatal dimensions in labor, despite this being the soft tissue complex through which the fetus passes in a vaginal delivery. Intrapartum assessment of pelvic floor hiatal dimensions, particularly in the second stage of labor, may improve understanding of the variation in levator hiatal measurements and their change between maternal and fetal characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: To assess the levator hiatal dimensions at rest during the passive second stage of labor using three-dimensional (3D) transperineal ultrasound, participants were consented

Association between antenatal care utilization, preeclampsia, and neonatal Apgar scores among postnatal women in Eswatini: an analytical cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder that occurs during pregnancy significantly associated with maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is associated with complications for both mothers and babies although 10 - 20% may be prevented through proper antenatal care (ANC) utilization. In Eswatini, despite high ANC coverage, there has been an increase in maternal and neonatal deaths with limited evidence of the associated factors. Therefore, this study examined the utilization of ANC services, prevalence, and factors associated with pre-eclampsia and low Apgar Score among Postn

Determinants of Catch-up Growth in Early Childhood: A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Growth failure in the first 1000 days of life can have a major impact on a child's health. Therefore, catching up on growth in early childhood is essential to prevent nutritional problems, especially stunting, as indicated by the height for age z-score (HAZ). Catch-up growth after a period of malnutrition in the first 1000 days of life can be measured as an improvement in linear growth using HAZ parameters. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the factors that influence catch-up growth in early childhood based on the HAZ. METHODS: This three-year cohort study used two waves o

Comparative audit of radiation in medicine resources in Anglophone West African countries of Nigeria and Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: In the past 25 years, access to training and services in radiation in medicine (RIM) has improved in Nigeria and Ghana, but intra-country setbacks and inter-country disparities persist. In 1999, Nigeria had fewer than 1500 radiographers, 150 radiologists, and just 15 medical physicists. Only two of its 41 universities offered radiography programmes. Ghana faced similar limitations in human and institutional resources. This study seeks to promote international peer benchmarking by auditing the current status of human and institutional resources supporting the training and practice

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for people with β-thalassaemia.

BACKGROUND: Thalassaemia is an autosomal recessive blood disorder, caused by mutations in globin genes or their regulatory regions, resulting in a reduced rate of synthesis of one of the globin chains that make up haemoglobin. In β-thalassaemia there is an underproduction of β-globin chains combined with excess of free α-globin chains. The excess free α-globin chains precipitate in red blood cells, leading to their increased destruction (haemolysis) and ineffective erythropoiesis. The conventional treatment is based on the correction of haemoglobin through regular red blood cell transfusions a

Indigenous knowledge of Rift Valley Fever among Somali nomadic pastoralists and its implications on public health delivery approaches in Ijara sub-County, North Eastern Kenya.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease whose outbreak results in heavy economic and public health burdens. In East Africa, RVF is mainly experienced in arid and semi-arid areas predominantly inhabited by the pastoralists. These areas experience sudden, dramatic epidemics of the disease at intervals of approximately 10 years, associated with widespread flooding and the resultant swarms of mosquitoes. Pastoralists' indigenous knowledge and experience of RVF is critical for public health interventions targeting prevention and control of RVF. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional
