[On the syndrome of childhood-hypoglycemia. I. Definition of hypoglycemia in different age-groups and problems of neonatal hypoglycemia (author's transl)].

Hypoglycemia was diagnosed in 118 patients admitted to the University Children's Hospital Basel over 13 years, altogether 137 times. A definition of infantile and childhood hypoglycemia is discussed. Hypoglycemia was accepted as the correct diagnosis in 72 cases (group I), where 2 or more blood sugar values or at least one blood sugar value and one glucose value in the cerebrospinal fluid were below the limit for the age-group. In 46 cases only one abnormal blood sugar value vas documented (group II). In 19 cases no value was found to be definitely below the normal range. 58 patients were newb

Disorders of language development, with particular reference to central deafness.

Many disorders may result in delay of language development. There is on the one hand a large group of children with bilateral peripheral deafness, most of whom will be amenable to appropriate treatment, and on the other a group, possibly more numerous, who have a variety of disorders of speech and language, varying from lack of speech associated with severe mental retardation to more specific defects, such as congenital dyslexia and developmental articulatory dyspraxia. These disorders are probably due to a defect of cerebral function at the highest level and in these children no-one will have

Assessing Blood-brain Barrier Function in the Context of Pain Management.

One essential component of the neurovascular system is known as the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This highly effective biological barrier plays a pivotal role in regulating the brain's internal microenvironment and carefully controlling the passage of various chemicals into and out of the brain. Notably, it serves as a safeguard for the brain, particularly when it comes to the selective transportation of drugs like opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), which are commonly used in the management of chronic pain. It's important to note that during the development of chro

Effects of factors inducing diffuse damage to brain tissue on sleep structure in laboratory rats.

Chronic experiments on laboratory rats with implanted electrodes for recording neocortical and hippocampal EEG and cervical muscle electromyogram traces were performed to study the effects of strong treatments inducing diffuse damage to brain tissue on subsequent sleep. Four different experimental models were used: one "chronic" (generalized cerebral ischemia induced by permanent occlusion of one of the common carotid arteries) and three "acute" (hypoxic hypoxia, hypoglycemia, and "penicillin" epilepsy). Sleep recordings were made in freely moving animals either day-round (in the "chronic" mod

Neuroinflammatory Dysfunction of the Blood-Brain Barrier and Basement Membrane Dysplasia Play a Role in the Development of Drug-Resistant Epilepsy.

Drug-resistance epilepsy (DRE) is a key problem in neurology. It is possible that damage to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) may affect resistance in DRE. The aim of this work was to assess the damage and dysfunction in the BBB in the area of epileptic foci in patients with DRE under conditions of neuroinflammation. The changes to the BBB in temporal lobe epilepsy (by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy), levels of neuroinflammatory proteins, and cytokine levels in the blood (by multiplex analysis) were studied. Increased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) a

Brain mitochondria as a primary target in the development of treatment strategies for Alzheimer disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebrovascular accidents are two leading causes of age-related dementia. Increasing evidence supports the idea that chronic hypoperfusion is primarily responsible for the pathogenesis that underlies both disease processes. In this regard, hypoperfusion appears to induce oxidative stress (OS), which is largely due to reactive oxygen species (ROS), and over time initiates mitochondrial failure which is known as an initiating factor of AD. Recent evidence indicates that chronic injury stimulus induces hypoperfusion seen in vulnerable brain regions. This reduced regio

[Craniocerebral trauma in sports. With recommendations for prevention].

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is found in many sports. A mild head injury (concussion of brain) is found in more than 80%, mainly in sports with contact to others. Especially affected by death are air sports, horse riding and cycling, whereby brain damage often is the leading injury. With the example of a cycling accident the possible processing dynamics of a mild head injury with secondary brain damage through an intracranial hematoma is demonstrated in the following. For the assessment of sports ability, there is often made the division with symptoms as confusion, amnesia and unconsciousness

Brain temperature, body core temperature, and intracranial pressure in acute cerebral damage.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the frequency of hyperthermia in a population of acute neurosurgical patients; to assess the relation between brain temperature (ICT) and core temperature (Tc); to investigate the effect of changes in brain temperature on intracranial pressure (ICP). METHODS: The study involved 20 patients (10 severe head injury, eight subarachnoid haemorrhage, two neoplasms) with median Glasgow coma score (GCS) 6. ICP and ICT were monitored by an intraventricular catheter coupled with a thermistor. Internal Tc was measured in the pulmonary artery by a Swan-Ganz catheter. RESULTS: Mean

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Therapeutic approaches against microvascular injury, and role of neutrophils, PAF, and free radicals.

The asphyxiated newborn undergoes progressive brain damage even after resuscitation. This article reviews the microvascular events that contribute to evolving brain injury. The role of neutrophils, platelet-activating factor (PAF), and free radicals is stressed as pivotal mechanisms of injury and opportunities for therapeutic intervention.

[Does acidosis in brain play a role in Alzheimer's disease?].

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by beta-amyloid plaques, tau pathology, cell death of cholinergic neurons, inflammatory processes and cerebrovascular damage. The reasons for the development of this chronic disease are not known yet. We hypothesize that chronic long lasting mild damage of the cerebrovascular brain capillaries cause hypoperfusion, acidosis and neurodegeneration, and induces a cell death cascade with beta-amyloid dysfunction and tau-pathology and inflammation. Vascular risk factors, such as hyperhomocysteinemia or hypercholesterolemia, may play a role in this process. The ac

Suppressing Interferon-γ Stimulates Microglial Responses and Repair of Microbleeds in the Diabetic Brain.

Microcirculatory damage is a common complication for those with vascular risk factors, such as diabetes. To resolve vascular insults, the brain's immune cells (microglia) must rapidly envelop the site of injury. Currently, it is unknown whether Type 1 diabetes, a condition associated with chronic immune system dysfunction, alters microglial responses to damage and what mechanisms are responsible. Using in vivo two-photon microscopy in adult male mice, we show that microglial envelopment of laser-induced cerebral microbleeds is diminished in a hyperglycemic mouse model of Type 1 diabetes, which
