Differences in normal nasal computed tomography findings in different dog breeds.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for diagnosing canine nasal diseases. However, it cannot easily detect minor abnormalities in inflammatory diseases because they are not accompanied by obvious morphological changes. AIM: The present study aimed to compare the differences in normal CT findings of turbinate structure and mucosa between breeds to establish criteria for CT diagnosis of inflammatory diseases of the nasal cavity. METHODS: CT data from 77 dogs of 5 breeds without nasal diseases were retrospectively studied. The nasal air percentage, which reflects the volum

Ovarian and Uterine Dynamics During the Estrous Cycle in Criollo Breed Mares.

After having been brought to America 400 years ago, the Criollo horse reproduced freely for centuries in the southern part of the American continent. Roughness, resistance, and endurance are typical characteristics of this breed of horses. Although the natural selection that occurred over the centuries may have positively influenced the fertility and longevity of this breed, information regarding ovarian function and other reproductive aspects of Criollo breed mares under natural or controlled management conditions is scarce. The objectives of the present study were to (1) characterize the fol

Assessment of Nasal Structure Using CT Imaging of Brachycephalic Dog Breeds.

The response to treatment of brachycephalic airway syndrome (BAS) varies among brachycephalic dog breeds. We hypothesized that variations in nasal structure are one of the factors responsible for this difference. To confirm this variation, we measured the ratio of the airway cross-sectional area to the total nasal cavity area (AA/NC) in three brachycephalic dog breeds. Head CT images of French bulldogs, shih tzus, and pugs were retrospectively collected. Four specific transverse planes were used to calculate AA/NC ratios. Fifty brachycephalic dogs were included in the study: French bulldogs (n

Cyclic hematopoiesis in a mixed-breed dog: case report and brief review.

An 8-wk-old, male, mixed-breed puppy was adopted from a rescue organization. From the time of adoption, the puppy suffered episodes of illness affecting various organ systems, which resolved with supportive therapy but relapsed once medical therapy was discontinued. Review of the hematologic data revealed cyclic fluctuations in circulating blood cells. Cyclicity was most prominent in neutrophils, with recurrent severe neutropenia. Neutropenic episodes lasted 5-6 d, with regular cycles of 11-14 d between nadir neutrophil counts. Genetic testing determined that the patient was homozygous mutant

Microsporum canis Infection in a Cat Breeder Family and an Investigation of Their Breeding Cats.

Two pediatric cases of Microsporum canis infection that occurred in a cat breeder family and the isolation of dermatophytes from their 166 breeding cats are reported. The patients were a 16-month-old girl and her 26-month-old sister who both had tinea capitis. Their family consisted of six members: the sisters, their great-grandmother, grandmother, grandfather, and mother. Except for the two sisters, the family had no history of skin lesions. The grandmother had been a cat breeder for 20 years. We tested the cats using the hairbrush technique, and 56 of the 158 cats (35%) tested were positive …

A comparative study of breed differences in the anatomical configuration of the equine vertebral column.

The importance of the equine thoracolumbar vertebral column in orthopaedic disorders is well recognized and diagnostic imaging becomes more feasible, but little is known about variations in the anatomical configuration within breeds. In this descriptive post-mortem study, anatomical variations in three widely differing breeds: Warmblood horses, Shetland ponies and semi-feral Konik horses are described. The caudal cervical (C), thoracic (T), lumbar (L) and sacral (S) regions of the vertebral column of 30 Warmblood horses, 29 Shetland ponies and 18 Konik horses were examined using computed tomog

Identification of common predisposing loci to hematopoietic cancers in four dog breeds.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare but aggressive cancer in both humans and dogs. The spontaneous canine model, which has clinical, epidemiological, and histological similarities with human HS and specific breed predispositions, provides a unique opportunity to unravel the genetic basis of this cancer. In this study, we aimed to identify germline risk factors associated with the development of HS in canine-predisposed breeds. We used a methodology that combined several genome-wide association studies in a multi-breed and multi-cancer approach as well as targeted next-generation sequencing, and

Novel radical pelvectomy technique to treat chondrosarcoma in a large-breed dog.

Surgical management of chondrosarcoma with hemipelvectomy is well described, but there have been no reports on extensive excision involving bilateral pubis and unilateral ischium. This report describes a novel pelvectomy technique for the treatment of chondrosarcoma in a large-breed dog. A 12-year-old Labrador Retriever presented for tenesmus due to a large, intra-pelvic mass which was confirmed on computed tomography (CT). Surgery involved removal of the entire left ischium and both pubic bones with preservation of both hind limbs. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a high-grade chondr

Closed spinal dysraphism in a 6-month-old mixed breed dog.

The term spinal dysraphism defines an incomplete fusion or a bone defect that affects the neural structures of the spinal cord due to a neural tube malformation. A 6-month-old, male, mixed-breed dog, was evaluated for paraparesis, pelvic limb proprioceptive ataxia, faecal and urinary incontinence. A neurological examination indicated an L4-S3 spinal cord segment lesion. A thoracolumbar and lumbosacral spine magnetic resonance imaging was performed and a closed spinal dysraphism, with the presence of a lipomyelomeningocele, was detected. The magnetic resonance imaging showed an entire narrowing

Inbreeding, effective population size, and coancestry in the Latxa dairy sheep breed.

Traditionally, breeding programs have estimated and managed inbreeding based on pedigree information. The availability of genomic marker panels has made possible new alternatives to achieve more precise estimates, for example in case of missing pedigree. The objective of the present study was to assess and compare, different estimation methods (pedigree-based methodologies, single SNP-based approach (homozygosity) and runs of homozygosity-based method) to analyze the evolution of genetic diversity measured as inbreeding or as coancestry of 3 selected populations of Latxa dairy sheep (Latxa Car…

CT variants of the caudal vena cava in 121 small breed dogs.

Computed tomography is increasingly used as a treatment planning method in canine patients with diseases of the retroperitoneum, however, published information on normal variations in the caudal vena cava (CVC) are currently lacking. The objectives of this retrospective descriptive study were to characterize CVC variants using CT angiography in a sample of small breed dogs and localize the CVC bifurcations for each variant. Inclusion criteria were small breed dogs (weight ≤ 15) that underwent contrast-enhanced CT scans of the CVC, abdominal aorta, and CVC tributaries. A total of 121 small bree

A genome-wide scan for diversifying selection signatures in selected horse breeds.

The genetic differentiation of the current horse population was evolutionarily created by natural or artificial selection which shaped the genomes of individual breeds in several unique ways. The availability of high throughput genotyping methods created the opportunity to study this genetic variation on a genome-wide level allowing detection of genome regions divergently selected between separate breeds as well as among different horse types sharing similar phenotypic features. In this study, we used the population differentiation index (FST) that is generally used for measuring locus-specifi

Long-bone properties and development are affected by caponisation and breed in Polish fowls.

1. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of caponisation on bone development of males of two native breeds in Poland. 2. The weight, length and cross-sectional area of tibiae and femora were measured, densitometric measurements and tests of strength were determined and dimensions were calculated. 3. Breed and caponisation did not influence bone weight and length. Higher mechanical strength of the femur was found in entire males, mainly in the Polbar breed. Tibial strength was reduced in capons of the Green Partridge breed. Maximum elastic strength was greater in the Polbar, irres

Microsatellite based Genetic Variation among the Buffalo Breed Populations in Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Eight microsatellite loci were used to define genetic diversity among five native water buffalo breeds in Pakistan. MATERIAL … all loci except ILSTS049 were found significantly deviated from HWE, most likely due to non-random breeding. The five buffalo populations were genetically less diverse as indicated by a small mean Fst value (0.07). The average gene flow (Nm) indicative for population migration was calculated as 3.31. Nei's original measures of genetic distance (Ds) reveal …

Metastatic Leiomyosarcoma Originating in the Thigh Skeletal Muscle of a Larry Breed Hen.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor arising from the smooth muscle of any soft tissue. Occurrence of this tumor in the skeletal muscles is rare. A 6-year-old Larry hen was examined because of lameness in one leg. A firm mass was palpable in its right thigh muscle, and radiographs showed extensive involvement of the surrounding soft tissues. The chicken was euthanatized. At postmortem examination, the primary tumor in the thigh skeletal muscles was firm and pink on its cut surface, and metastatic nodules were observed in the liver, spleen, kidneys, heart, and lungs. On histopathologic examinati
