BACKGROUND: Bromine compounds are used in several drugs, including over-the-counter drugs. They sometimes cause intoxication known as bromism. Although the acute neurological symptoms and sequelae of bromism vary, few reports have mentioned acute encephalopathy.

A negatively charged biradical intermediate was successfully generated in the gas phase via cyclization of the deprotonated bicyclo[8.3.0]tr … ogen-containing substrates carbon tetrachloride, carbon tetrabromide, and bromotrichloromethane via bromine or chlorine atom abstraction, which supports its biradical structure. The results presented in this study indicate that cyclizations commonly used in solution to form biradical intermediates from enediyne compounds may also occur in the gas phase.

A new two-step one-pot aminobromination/chlorination of carbonyl alkynes has been achieved via a Michael addition of aliphatic secondary amines and subsequent β-bromination/chlorination of the obtained enamines to afford various α-X (X = Br or Cl) enamino ketones/esters in moderate to good yields. A solvent-controllable protocol has been developed to produce versatile 3-(2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl)acrylates in moderate yields by using toluene as the solvent and chain alkyl propiolates as alkynyl substrates.

We have developed a method for the stereoselective coupling of terminal alkynes and α-bromo carbonyls to generate functionalized E-alkenes. The coupling is accomplished by merging the closed-shell hydrocupration of alkynes with the open-shell single electron transfer (SET) chemistry of the resulting alkenyl copper intermediate. The search for reactions where KOtBu and other tert-alkoxides might behave as single electron donors led us to explore their reactions with tetrahalomethanes, CX₄, in the presence of adamantane. A facile and highly enantioselective approach towards 2-substituted 3-bromopyrrolidines has been developed. The process involves an amino-thiocarbamate catalyzed bromoaminocyclization of 1,2-disubstituted olefinic amides. The pyrrolidine products could readily be converted into other useful building blocks including a dihydropyrrole and a 2-substituted pyrrolidine.

Cu(I)-catalyzed reaction of o-bromobenzaldehydes with β-ketoesters using Cs(2)CO(3) as a base and 2-picolinic acid as an additive proceeds under mild conditions and gives access to substituted naphthalenes in a single step with yields ranging from 71 to 86%. The new annulation process relies on a domino Knoevenagel condensation/C-arylation/1,2-addition/carboxylic acid cleavage. The annulation can also be achieved with o-iodobenzaldehyde.
