Bronchiectasis are defined as an irreversible focal or diffuse dilatation of the bronchi and can be associated with significant morbidity. The prevalence is currently increasing, probably due to an increased use of thoracic computed tomography (CT). Indeed, the diagnosis relies on imaging and chest CT is the gold standard technique. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of heparin on the rat bronchial mucosa changes induced by sulphur dioxide (SO2) inhalation. Sixty five rats were used in this experiment. Five of them constituted a control group, while 60 were exposed to SO2. Forty of the latter subgroup were additionally treated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), either during or after terminating exposure to SO2. Rupture of the trachea and major bronchi usually results from blunt trauma to the chest. To define the characteristics of the condition, the mechanism of injury, presentation and hospital course, the authors reviewed seven cases of tracheobronchial rupture after blunt trauma. Abnormalities in the production and transport of airway secretions play an important role in the pathophysiology of asthma, especially during acute exacerbations of the disease. We report the first case of mixed pulmonary infection with Strongyloides stercoralis and Blastomyces dermatitidis. Histopathology from the lung biopsy showed structures consistent with B. dermatitidis and S. stercoralis. A parasitology exam from a bronchi alveolar lavage yielded an immature rhabditiform larva and female worm. Fungal cultures grew B. dermatitidis.

A 26-year-old female with polysplenia syndrome is reported. She had numerous visceral anomalies including polysplenia, a short pancreas, a preduodenal portal vein, malrotation of the bowel, azygos continuation of the inferior vena cava, bilateral hyparterial bronchi and symmetrical liver lobation. Agenesis of the lung is rare. The cases of ten patients with this malformation are recorded and illustrated. Most had congenital malformation of other organs, especially the heart, as well. All had hypoplasia of the pulmonary artery or its branches. A pantaloon-like appearance of the trachea and the main bronchi on the bronchograms is described. Exercise tolerance was impaired in all patients.

Reports of cavitary lung cancer are not uncommon, and the cavity generally contains either dilated bronchi or cancer cells. Recently, we encountered a surgical case of cavitary lung cancer whose cavity tended to enlarge during long-term follow-up, and was found to be lined with normal bronchial epithelium and adenocarcinoma cells.

Two babies are described with oesophageal atresia, a tracheo-oesophageal fistula and severe subglottic tracheal stenosis. A third baby, who did not survive, had a tracheal agenesis associated with bronchi arising from the oesophagus. The surgical anatomy of the airways from the glottis to segmental bronchi is reviewed with a focused review on pertinent anatomic findings surrounding common surgical procedures. The knowledge of the anatomy of the trachea while performing tracheostomy, tracheal and sleeve carinal resection, and bronchoplastic procedures is addressed. Pertinent anatomic relationships as evident on common computed tomographic imagery are emphasized.

Mounier-Kuhn syndrome, or tracheobronchomegaly, is a rare clinical entity characterized by abnormal dilation of the trachea and main bronchi. The diagnosis can usually be made by measuring the tracheal diameter. We report the case of a 40-year-old black man with refractory lower respiratory tract infection. Tracheobronchomegaly was confirmed through computed tomography.

Radiologic manifestations of X-linked chondrodysplasia punctata (CDPX1) typically include chondrodysplasia, epiphyseal stippling, punctate calcification of cartilage, distal phalangeal hypoplasia, and nasal/midface hypoplasia. We present an infant with CDPX1 demonstrating calcification and stenosis of the entire trachea and mainstem bronchi, as well as possible anterior C1 subluxation due to progression of congenital vertebral dysplasia.
