[Non-drug toxicoderma by a respiratory or probable percutaneous route (fluorocarbons, butane, phenyl-azo-beta-naphthol)].

Four cases of cutaneous rash, clinically more or less similar to erythema multiforme have been observed in patient who either stayed in a room with an accidentally high content of fluorocarbons, or had a skin contact with butane or phenyl-azo-beta-naphthol. The cutaneous lesions appear to be secondary to absorption of the toxic product, and probably induced by inhalation rather than by percutaneous penetration. Arguments for the responsibility of the substances rely on anamnestic data.

Analysis of Cost and Patient Charges at a Regional Burn Center.

Burn injuries present significant public health and economic challenges in the United States. This study aimed to evaluate the key drivers of burn care costs by assessing relative changes in variable direct costs (VDC). A retrospective review of burn patients treated between 2022 and 2023 was conducted using cost and clinical data from hospital financial records. Patient demographics and clinical variables, including age, total body surface area, length of hospital stay, number of days on a ventilator, number of procedures, number of complications, number of comorbidities, and presence of inha

Lung Function in Oil Spill Response Workers 1-3 Years After the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effects of inhalation exposures on lung function among workers involved in the mitigation of oil spills. Our objective was to determine the relationship between oil spill response work and lung function 1-3 years after the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) disaster. METHODS: We evaluated spirometry for 7,775 adults living in the Gulf states who either participated in DWH response efforts (workers) or received safety training but were not hired (nonworkers). At an enrollment interview, we collected detailed work histories including information on potential exposure

Colloid administration normalizes resuscitation ratio and ameliorates "fluid creep".

Although colloid was a component of the original Parkland formula, it has been omitted from standard Parkland resuscitation for over 30 years. However, some burn centers use colloid as "rescue" therapy for patients who exhibit progressively increasing crystalloid requirements, a phenomenon termed "fluid creep." We reviewed our experience with this procedure. With Institutional Review Board approval, we reviewed all adult patients with > or =20%TBSA burns admitted from January 1, 2005, through December 31, 2007, who completed formal resuscitation. Patients were resuscitated using the Parkland f

Longitudinal, population-based analysis of burn injuries across Canada pre-recreational and post-recreational cannabis legalisation.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational cannabis legalisation (RCL) in Canada was implemented in October 2018 following a federal announcement in August 2015, with commercialisation occurring in a staggered, province-dependent manner. Cannabis may increase burn risk through hydrocarbon burns from butane hash oil extraction, inhalation injuries, psychomotor impairment, increasing the risk of flame-related accidents and illicit production practices. How burn-related injuries have changed over time around these policy shifts at a population level remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted an interrupted time ser

Smoke inhalation.

Unfortunately, fires are common events both in urban and rural portions of the United States. Smoke inhalation is the leading fire-related cause of death. The elemental combustion products of fire are light, heat, and smoke. Smoke is a very complex mixture of potentially harmful substances. Although a relatively rare presenting event to small animal hospitals, when animal fire victims do appear, clinicians must know how to recognize the signs of smoke inhalation and how to successfully deal with them. This discussion will investigate the toxic nature of fire smoke, its mechanism of action upon

Sarcoidosis and burn pit exposure in military deployers to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Southwest Asia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inhalational exposures have been hypothesized to play a role in the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis. Herein, we describe a cohort of US Military personnel diagnosed with sarcoidosis during or after deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan, who experienced complex inhalational exposures to burn-pits and desert dust. METHODS: Consecutive military personnel at four sub-specialty clinics across the United States were screened for deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan and diagnosis of sarcoidosis based on 1999 ATS/ERS/WASOG Statement on Sarcoidosis. Detailed demographic,

Management of combined massive burn and blast injury: A 20-year experience.

INTRODUCTION: Blast injuries are complex types of physical trauma resulting from direct or indirect exposure to an explosion, which can be divided into four classes: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. Primary blast injury results in damage, principally, in gas-containing organs such as the lungs (blast lung injury, BLI). BLI is defined as radiological and clinical evidence of acute lung injury occurring within 12h of exposure to an explosion and not due to secondary or tertiary injury. BLI often combines with cutaneous thermal injury, a type of quaternary blast injury, either in ter

Iraq/Afghanistan war lung injury reflects burn pits exposure.

This descriptive case series retrospectively reviewed medical records from thirty-one previously healthy, war-fighting veterans who self-reported exposure to airborne hazards while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and the present. They all noted new-onset dyspnea, which began during deployment or as a military contractor. Twenty-one subjects underwent non-invasive pulmonary diagnostic testing, including maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) and impulse oscillometry (IOS). In addition, five soldiers received a lung biopsy; tissue results were compared to a previously published sample fr

[Analysis of the treatment of 82 patients with inhalation injury].

OBJECTIVE: To learn the experiences and improve the treatment of inhalation injury. METHODS: Causes of death and treatment effects were analyzed in a group of 82 patients admitted from January 1994 to April 1998. RESULTS: Among the 82 patients, 33 patients were cured, 11 patients were improved and 38 patients died. Among the 38 cases of death, 24 patients died directly of inhalation injury and 14 patients died of other complications. CONCLUSION: The major causes of death of the patients with inhalation injury are acute intoxication, asphyxia, and ARDS(acute respiratory distress syndrome). F

James Craufurd Gregory, 19th century Scottish physicians, and the link between occupation as a coal miner and lung disease.

By the mid-19th century about 200,000 miners were employed in a UK coal mining industry still growing with the advances of the Industrial Revolution. Coal miners were long known to suffer poor health but the link to inhaling dust in the mines had not been made. In 1813 George Pearson was the first to suggest that darkening of lungs seen in normal individuals as they aged was caused by inhaled soot from burning oil, candles and coal, which were the common domestic sources of heat and light. In 1831 Dr James Craufurd Gregory first described black pigmentation and disease in the lungs of a deceas

Post-mortem detection of gasoline residues in lung tissue and heart blood of fire victims.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether gasoline residues could be detected post-mortem in lung tissue and heart blood of fire victims. The lungs and heart blood were investigated to determine whether they were suitable samples for collection and could be collected without contamination during an autopsy. Three sets of test subjects (pig carcasses) were investigated under two different fire scenarios. Test subjects 1 were anaesthetized following animal ethics approval, inhaled gasoline vapours for a short period and then euthanized. The carcasses were clothed and placed in a house w

Evaluation of Proper Usage of Glucocorticosteroid Inhalers and Their Adverse Effects in Asthmatic Patients.

BACKGROUND: The frequent use of corticosteroid inhalers (CSIs), especially at higher doses, has been accompanied by concern about both systemic and local adverse reactions. The local adverse reactions of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) are considered to constitute infrequent and minor problems. However, while not usually serious, these local adverse reactions are of clinical importance. This study assessed the prevalence of local adverse reactions, their clinical features, role of inhaler devices and current measures that have been suggested to prevent the problem. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

Sex-based differences in lymphocyte proliferation in the spleen after vanadium inhalation.

Vanadium (V) is a transition metal often adhered to particulate matter and released into the atmosphere as vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) by the burning of fossil fuels. This air pollutant causes adverse effects in the immune system. Lymphocytosis and splenomegaly have been reported with increased white pulp in mice after V inhalation. The effect of V on the immune system as related to sex has been poorly investigated. This study sought to determine if V inhalation (a) produced lymphoproliferation that could explain the changes previously observed in the spleen and in peripheral blood lymphocyte co

Acute laryngeal and bronchial obstruction after CS (o-chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile) gas inhalation.

CS gas (o-chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile) is one of the most commonly used riot agents. It can create excessive tearing, conjunctivitis, uncontrolled blinking (blepharospasm) and a sensation of burning and pain at initial exposure. Pulmonary edema (ARDS) and/or diffuse airway lesions on human would be lethal after CS inhalation. We report a case with acute laryngeal and bronchial obstruction due to vocal cord edema and extensive crusting at glottic level, trachea and bronchi. The CS gas was sprayed in a 6 x 6 m(2) closed room, and she was exposed to increased concentration of the gas for 10 s.

Longitudinal changes in lung function following post-9/11 military deployment in symptomatic veterans.

RATIONALE: Exposure to burn pit smoke, desert and combat dust, and diesel exhaust during military deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan (SWA) can cause deployment-related respiratory diseases (DRRDs) and may confer risk for worsening lung function after return. METHODS: Study subjects were SWA-deployed veterans who underwent occupational lung disease evaluation (n = 219). We assessed differences in lung function by deployment exposures and DRRD diagnoses. We used linear mixed models to assess changes in lung function over time. RESULTS: Most symptomatic veterans reported high intensit

Working conditions and environmental exposures among electronic waste workers in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and describe informal e-waste recycling and working conditions at Agbogbloshie, Accra, Ghana. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews which were qualitatively analysed from a grounded theory perspective. RESULTS: Workers obtained e-waste from the various residential areas in Accra, then dismantled and burned them in open air to recover copper, aluminum, steel, and other products for sale to customers on-site or at the nearby Agbogbloshie market. The processers worked under unhealthy conditions often surrounded by refuse and human excreta without any form of protec
