Attractiveness, diagnostic ambiguity, and disability cues impact perceptions of women with pain.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: This experimental study investigated how physical attractiveness, disability cue, and diagnostic ambiguity stereotypes impact perceptions of a patient's pain/disability and personality. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: After viewing photographs of women pictured with or without a cane, accompanied by descriptions of the women's diagnosis (fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis), 147 university students rated the women's pain/disability and personality. RESULTS: Analyses revealed that more attractive women received lower ratings on pain/disability and higher ratings (more positive) on

Congenital lumbar spinal stenosis with ossification of the ligamentum flavum in achondroplasia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Achondroplasia is a genetic disorder of bone growth. Congenital spinal stenosis is a well-known complication of this disease, but, to the best of our knowledge, no cases involving combined stenosis with congenital lumbar spinal stenosis and ossification of the ligamentum flavum in achondroplasia have been reported previously. In this report, we describe a case of a patient with congenital spinal stenosis with achondroplasia combined with ossification of the ligamentum flavum at the lumbar spine, which we treated with decompressive surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old Japane

MRT letter: Human bloodstains on antique aboriginal weapons: a guiding low-vacuum SEM study of erythrocytes in experimental samples on ethnographically documented biological raw materials.

The aboriginal use of reed and bone as raw materials for knives and daggers, respectively, has been well-documented ethnographically in some geographical areas of Melanesia. Because of the significant role that these weapons played in inter- and intra-ethnic aggression, they can potentially have retained smears from the contact with human blood. To carry out a guiding low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of specific interest to ethnography, the outsides of a fragment of stalk of giant cane (Arundo donax) and tibial diaphysis of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) were smeared with perip

Condylar bony changes in patients with temporomandibular disorders: a CBCT study.

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of osteoarthritis most commonly depends on clinical and radiographic findings. The present study attempted to observe the bony changes in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) patients from all age groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first-visit clinical records and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of 440 TMJs from 220 consecutive TMJ patients were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: The most frequent condylar bony change observed was sclerosis (133 joints, 30.2%) followed by surface erosion (129 joints, 29.3%), flattening of the articular surface (112 joints, 25.5%), and d

Impact of carbon ion radiotherapy for unresectable osteosarcoma of the trunk.

BACKGROUND: The authors summarized the outcomes of patients with unresectable osteosarcoma of the trunk who received carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT). METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective analysis of 78 patients who had medically inoperable osteosarcoma of the trunk and received treatment with CIRT between 1996 and 2009. Tumor sites included the pelvis in 61 patients, the spine and paraspinal region in 15 patients, and other sites in 2 patients. The median applied CIRT dose was 70.4 Gray equivalent (GyE) in a total of 16 fixed fractions over 4 weeks. RESULTS: The minimum duration of

Foot drop caused by a lesion in the thoracolumbar spine.

STUDY DESIGN: Fifteen patients with foot drop caused by a thoracolumbar spine lesion were retrospectively investigated. OBJECTIVE: To clarify surgical outcomes and prognostic factors for foot drop owing to thoracolumbar disease. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although the literature contains some reports of the surgical outcome for foot drop because of lumbar degenerative disease, to the best of our knowledge, little is known about foot drop resulting from thoracolumbar lesions. METHODS: Thoracolumbar lesions were classified into 2 groups (ossification of the ligamentum flavum; OLF, and osteop

Laserlight cues for gait freezing in Parkinson's disease: an open-label study.

Freezing of gait (FOG) and falls are major sources of disability for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and show limited responsiveness to medications. We assessed the efficacy of visual cues for overcoming FOG in an open-label study of 26 patients with PD. The change in the frequency of falls was a secondary outcome measure. Subjects underwent a 1-2 month baseline period of use of a cane or walker without visual cues, followed by 1 month using the same device with the laserlight visual cue. The laserlight visual cue was associated with a modest but significant mean reduction in FOG Questionna

An exploration of step time variability on smooth and irregular surfaces in older persons with neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Increased step time variability, particularly on an irregular surface, has been associated with impaired mobility function and a variety of diseases. However the biomechanical necessity, or advantage, of increasing step time variability has not been identified. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of gait data previously obtained on 42 subjects age 50 or older with neuropathy who walked on smooth and irregular surfaces, the latter with and without three interventions (cane, ankle orthosis and wall touch) that provided frontal plane support. FINDINGS: Step time variability o

[Central cervical cord syndrome: a case report on rehabilitation, with special references to accidental falls in the elderly].

An 81-year-old man with Parkinson's disease was admitted to our hospital with impaired function of all extremities. Four weeks before his symptoms developed, he had tripped on the steps, fallen and bruised his jaw. Following this episode he experienced a few more falls inside his house. On examination his greatest weakness was in the hands and wrists. He was hyper-reflexic in all extremities and had bilateral Babinski's sign. He could not walk and needed physical assistance in most of his daily living activities. X-ray films of the cervical spine showed significant degenerative changes. The ma

[A case of Crow-Fukase syndrome which developed seven years following myelopathy of unknown origin].

A rare case of Crow-Fukase syndrome was reported, which developed 7 years following myelopathy of unknown origin. In September 1983, a 31-year-old man came to our department for progressive gait disturbance and numbness in both lower extremities. Examination on admission showed hyperreflexia with clonus and moderated muscle weakness of legs, and paresthesia below Th9 level, but myelography and CT indicated no abnormality. Thereafter, he was doing as well as walkable with a cane, but in 1989 he developed hypertrichosis, skin pigmentation, leg edema and gynecomastia with aggravation of numbness

Rituximab in refractory chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a disorder in which early effective treatment is important to minimize disability from axonal degeneration. It has been suggested that some patients with CIDP may benefit from rituximab therapy, but there is no definitive evidence for this. METHODS: Baseline and post-rituximab-therapy neuromuscular Medical Research Council (MRC) sum scores, Inflammatory Neuropathy Cause and Treatment (INCAT) disability score, and functional status were assessed in 11 patients with refactory CIDP. RESULTS: The MRC sum score, INCAT disab

Diagnostic Challenge of a Tumor-mimicking Spinal Pseudogout Lesion: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Retro-odontoid pseudotumor (ROP) is a non-neoplastic soft-tissue mass occurring around the C2 odontoid process and is most often associated with rheumatoid atlantoaxial instability. In rare instances, calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition (pseudogout) in the C1-C2 ligaments - a presentation known as "crowned dens syndrome" - can produce a periodontoid mass. Such CPPD-induced lesions usually present with acute neck pain and stiffness, with calcifications visible around the odontoid process on imaging. However, these masses can occasionally enlarge and compres

Balancing gain and diversity: Optimal contribution selection for sustainable genetic improvement in sugarcane.

Sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids), the source of ∼80% of the worlds sugar, has experienced a plateau in genetic improvement over recent decades. This stagnation is largely due to the crop's complex polyploid genome and long breeding cycles, which limit the efficiency of traditional selection methods. Genomic selection (GS) has been proposed to accelerate breeding progress in sugarcane by enabling faster improvement of key commercial traits such as cane yield, sugar content, and disease resistance. However, especially in clonally propagated outbred crops like sugarcane, intensive GS can reduce

Similar Habitat Gradients Across Native and Invasive Ranges Elicit Divergent Evolutionary Responses.

Knowledge about an invasive species' biology within its native range illuminates the underlying evolutionary processes that occur following introduction. Cane toads (Rhinella marina) were introduced to coastal Queensland in 1935 and continue to expand their range across Australia. Despite low genetic diversity, they have accelerated their expansion across novel, arid environments as they travelled westward, differing from their eastern Australian conspecifics in morphology, physiology, and behaviour. The recent discovery of two ecotypes (from wetter 'rainforest' and drier 'coastal' areas) in t
