OBJECTIVE: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is among the autoimmune disorders caused by antiphospholipid antibodies, which provoke blood clots (thrombosis) in arteries and veins. It can also cause such complications as severe preeclampsia, miscarriage, premature birth, and stillbirth in pregnant women. We studied 30 children with systemic lupus erythematosus in order to detect the clinical, pathological and serological findings associated with the development of thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic anemia. Evidence is presented for the existence of antibodies against platelet glycosphingolipids in sera of patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and antiplatelet antibodies. Increased binding of IgG/IgM to neutral glycosphingolipids or gangliosides extracted from donor platelets was measured by an ELISA in 17 sera of 30 patients. Thirteen sera, five with anticardiolipin antibodies, demonstrated an increased binding to sulphatides confirmed by immuno HPTLC. Four sera showed reactivity with the platelet minor gangliosides established by immuno-HPTLC.

Anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) and lupus-like anticoagulant (LLAC) have been studied in a group of 142 non-hospitalized and a group of 72 hospitalized HIV infected patients.
