BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of a Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) like disease causing large mortalities in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Asia and in Africa have been reported since 1890. Yet the aetiology of this condition remains elusive. This study is the first to apply state of the art molecular methods to shed light on the nasopharyngeal carrier state of Pasteurellaceae in camels. The study focused on HS causing Pasteurella multocida capsular types B and E. Other Pasteurellaceae, implicated in common respiratory infections of animals, were also investigated.

Salmonella infection causes a wide range of intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations as well as a lifetime carrier state. Untreated patients may develop complications, which can be life-threatening. Electrocardiogram (ECG) changes are a common occurrence in enteric fever and may be helpful in predicting myocarditis. Common ECG changes are decreased amplitude of QRS complexes, QTc prolongation and right bundle branch block. Ventricular bigeminy in enteric fever is a rare phenomenon. We report its occurrence in a patient.

The authors present experimental-epidemiological data permitting to give an objective quantitative characteristics of the hazard of infection in meningococcus infection (including the carrier state and nasopharyngitis). In 70% of cases meningococcus infection occurred at a distance of less than 0.5 meters. With increase of the distance and reduction of the time of contact the risk of meningococcus infection in a collective body falls to the zero (no such phenomenon is observed in other droplet infections).
