Housing accommodation preferences of people with psychiatric disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: The study sought to identify the types of housing preferred by people with psychiatric disabilities seeking accommodations through a community mental health service in Sydney, Australia. METHODS: Housing options available in the mental health service's catchment area were identified, and the extent of demands on residents' behavior that was associated with each option was assessed using an established measure. Clients examined descriptions of each housing option and rank-ordered the options based on their preferences. Clients' current levels of functioning and symptoms were also as

Lessons Learned From a Trial of a Bilingual Community-Based Peer Navigation And mHealth Intervention to Address HIV, STI, HCV, and Mpox Inequities Among GBQMSM and Transgender and Nonbinary Persons in Appalachia.

Our community-based participatory research partnership developed and tested the bilingual Appalachian Access Project, a peer navigation and mHealth intervention designed to promote HIV, sexually transmitted infection, hepatitis C virus, and mpox prevention and care among gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men and transgender and nonbinary persons in Appalachia and to support medically supervised gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) access among those desiring it. Although the intervention did not achieve its intended behavioral outcomes (e.g., increased use of HIV testing

Changes in heroin-related ambulance attendances following the introduction of a medically supervised injecting room in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality and broader social harms globally. Supervised Injecting Facilities (SIFs) are harm reduction interventions that reduce overdose risk and facilitate access to health services for marginalised individuals. While international evidence supports the effectiveness of SIFs, Australian population-level surveillance data quantifying their impact on emergency medical service utilisation remain limited. METHODS: Using data from the National Ambulance Surveillance System, we conducted a retrospective, interrupted time serie

Syndromic surveillance using monthly aggregate health systems information data: methods with application to COVID-19 in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of SARS-CoV-2 circulation is imperative to inform local public health response. However, it has been hindered by limited access to SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests and testing infrastructure. In regions with limited testing capacity, routinely collected health data might be leveraged to identify geographical locales experiencing higher than expected rates of COVID-19-associated symptoms for more specific testing activities. METHODS: We developed syndromic surveillance tools to analyse aggregated health facility data on COVID-19-related indicators in seven low- and middl

Epidemiology and surveillance of human animal-bite injuries and rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, in selected counties in Kenya, 2011-2016.

BACKGROUND: Human animal-bite injuries are a serious public health problem due to associated risk for rabies virus exposure. Animal-bite injuries especially dog bites are useful indicators for assessing the risk of rabies virus transmission and need for rabies post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Understanding the epidemiology and surveillance of animal bites and rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is critical in implementing Kenya's national rabies elimination strategy. We aimed to describe the incidence of human animal-bite injuries, patient/biting animal characteristics, uptake of rabies PEP and f

Audit of clinical judgements and actions in an audiological investigation of school entrant children screened positive for hearing loss.

Of 117 children attending an aural clinic after screening positive by one or both of two tests for hearing loss at school entry, 43 (36.8%) were either seen again for review or listed for surgery. Clinical findings which were significantly associated with either being reviewed or listed for surgery, as opposed to being discharged, were the presence of conductive or sensory neural hearing loss, pronounced negative pressure, reduced compliance volume or absent stapedial reflexes on impedance testing and the presence of an abnormal tympanic membrane associated with effusion on otoscopy. Identification of multiple potential viral diseases in a large urban center using wastewater surveillance.

Viruses are linked to a multitude of human illnesses and can disseminate widely in urbanized environments causing global adverse impacts on communities and healthcare infrastructures. Wastewater-based epidemiology was employed using metagenomics and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays to identify enteric and non-enteric viruses collected from a large urban area for potential public health monitoring and outbreak analysis. Untreated wastewater samples were collected from November 2017 to February 2018 (n = 54) to evaluate the diversity of human viral pathogens in collected samp

Effectiveness of Oral Cholera Vaccine in Haiti: 37-Month Follow-Up.

The first oral cholera vaccine (OCV) campaign, since its prequalification by the World Health Organization, in response to an ongoing cholera epidemic (reactive vaccination) was successfully conducted in a poor urban slum of approximately 70,000 inhabitants in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 2012. Vaccine coverage was 75% of the target population. This report documents the impact of OCV in reducing the number of culture-confirmed cases of cholera admitted to the Groupe Haïtien d'Etude du Sarcome de Kaposi et des Infections Opportunistes (GHESKIO) cholera treatment center from that community in the 3

Location-allocation and accessibility models for improving the spatial planning of public health services.

This study integrated accessibility and location-allocation models in geographic information systems as a proposed strategy to improve the spatial planning of public health services. To estimate the spatial accessibility, we modified the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) model with a different impedance function, a Gaussian weight for competition among service sites, a friction coefficient, distances along a street network based on the Dijkstra's algorithm and by performing a vectorial analysis. To check the accuracy of the strategy, we used the data from the public sterilization progra

Clinically detectable copy number variations in a Canadian catchment population of schizophrenia.

Copy number variation (CNV) is a highly topical area of research in schizophrenia, but the clinical relevance is uncertain and the translation to clinical practice is under-studied. There is a paucity of research involving truly community-based samples of schizophrenia and widely available laboratory techniques. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of clinically detectable CNVs in a community sample of schizophrenia, while mimicking typical clinical practice conditions. We used a brief clinical screening protocol for developmental features in adults with schizophrenia for identifying

[Frequency and determinants of inter-hospital transfers in the Local Health Unit of Frosinone, Italy in the years 1997-2005].

Community and rural hospitals rely to a greater extent on transferring acute patients to other settings which can provide the required definitive care. Using data on all hospital discharges of patients from the 11 acute care hospitals of the Frosinone Local Health Unit (7 of which were publicly run, and 4 were run by privates) over the period 1997-2005, a study was carried out to assess the frequency, time-trend and determinants of transfers. Between 1997 and 2005, 8,009 patients (1.3%) were transferred to acute care hospitals, while 2,499 (0.4%) were transferred to long-term and rehabilitatio

Suicides in the midnight sun--a study of seasonality in suicides in West Greenland.

Greenland is the most extreme of human habitats in regard to annual changes in natural light. From being very low, the rate of suicides in Greenland has increased during the past few decades to be among the highest in the world. Several studies have shown seasonality in suicides with spring or summer peaks, but this has not been previously shown in Greenland. Official data from 1968 to 1995 from West Greenland were pooled. A significant seasonality in the 833 suicides was found using Rayleigh's test, a peak in June and a trough in the winter. Suicides increased during the period, and reached h

The relationship of obsessive-compulsive disorder to putative spectrum disorders: results from an Indian study.

The relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and putative obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum disorders is unclear. This study investigates the prevalence of putative OC spectrum disorders in OCD subjects in a controlled clinical design. The putative OC spectrum disorders studied included somatoform disorders (body dysmorphic disorder [BDD] and hypochondriasis), eating disorders, tic disorders (e.g., Tourette's syndrome [TS]), and impulse control disorders (e.g., trichotillomania). Only those disorders that are commonly noted to be possibly related to OCD are studied. Included i

Course of alcoholism in homeless men in Munich, Germany: results from a prospective longitudinal study based on a representative sample.

In an earlier paper (Fichter, M. M., Quadflieg, N. (1999). Alcoholism in homeless men in the mid-nineties: results from the Bavarian Public Health Study on Homelessness. European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience 249:34-44), we reported data on alcoholism and comorbidity in 265 homeless men in Munich. There-as in this paper-we divided the sample into three groups based on a lifetime diagnosis of alcohol dependence (N = 187), alcohol abuse (N = 17), and no diagnosis of alcoholism (N = 61) at baseline assessment. This study reports a three-year prospective longitudinal assessment
