Use of gamma irradiation technology for modification of bacterial cellulose nanocrystals/chitosan nanocomposite film.

The objective of this work was to investigate the influence of different gamma ray dosages (5, 10, and 10 kGy) on the structural, mechanical, surface and barrier properties of chitosan (Ch) based nanocomposite film. The results showed gamma irradiation caused an increase in the surface hydrophobicity, water vapor permeability and sensitivity of films to water and also, yellowness and opacity of films increased, simultaneously. By increasing the irradiation doses up to 10 kGy, the mechanical properties of Ch/BCNC film was significantly enhanced. As observed by FTIR spectra, no change occurred i

Graphene Oxide-IPDI-Ag/ZnO@Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Nanocomposite Films for Biological Wound-Dressing Applications.

In this work, we proposed a feasible approach to prepare multifunctional composite films by introducing a nanoscaled filler into a polymer matrix. Specifically, thanks to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) acting as a coupling agent, the hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and the hydroxyl groups on the surface of silver-coated zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ag/ZnO) are covalently grafted, forming GO-IPDI-Ag/ZnO (AGO). The prepared AGO was then introduced into the hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) matrix to form AGO@HPC nanocomposite films by solution blending. AGO@HPC…

Improved antifungal activity and stability of chitosan nanofibers using cellulose nanocrystal on banknote papers.

Microorganisms can spread on the surface of banknotes and cause many infectious diseases. Chitosan nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are nanomaterials, which can affect the antimicrobial properties. In this study, the fungal species that grew on the surfaces of collected banknotes from different places were identified. To examine the antifungal effect of the both nanomaterials on the banknotes, the stable coatings using CNFs and CNCs emulsions were prepared by roller coating. The results revealed that the most colonies in the banknotes obtained from the bakeries and butcherie…

Injectable and Gellable Chitosan Formulations Filled with Cellulose Nanofibers for Intervertebral Disc Tissue Engineering.

The development of non-cellularized injectable suspensions of viscous chitosan (CHI) solutions (1.7⁻3.3% (w/w)), filled with cellulose nanofibers (CNF) (0.02⁻0.6% (w/w)) of the type nanofibrillated cellulose, was proposed for viscosupplementation of the intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus tissue. The achievement of CNF/CHI formulations which can gel in situ at the disc injection site constitutes a minimally-invasive approach to restore damaged/degenerated discs. We studied physico-chemical aspects of the sol and gel states of the CNF/CHI formulations, including the rheological behavior in rel…

In this paper, we report on the results of spectrofluorimetric study of new fluorescent sensor based on [Zn2L2] doped in ethyl cellulose. The sensor optical signal is based on the rapid fluorescence quenching in the presence of acetone vapor. The acetone vapor detection limit in a gas mixture by means of sensor based on [Zn2L2] doped in ethyl cellulose is 1.68 ppb. Being highly sensitive to the acetone acetone presence, instant in response and easy to use, the sensor can find an application for the noninvasive diagnostics of diabetes as well as for the monitoring of the content of acetone acet…

Pulmonary exposure to cellulose nanocrystals caused deleterious effects to reproductive system in male mice.

Over the past several years there has been an increased number of applications of cellulosic materials in many sectors, including the food industry, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. However, to date, there are few studies investigating the potential adverse effects of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The objective of this study was to determine long-term outcomes on the male reproductive system of mice upon repeated pharyngeal aspiration exposure to CNC. To achieve this, cauda epididymal sperm samples were analyzed for sperm concentration, motility, morphological abnormalities, and DNA damage. Tes…

Bacterial Cellulose-Based Biomimetic Nanofibrous Scaffold with Muscle Cells for Hollow Organ Tissue Engineering.

In this study, we built a bilayer nanofibrous material by utilizing the gelatinization properties of potato starch (PS) to interrupt bacterial cellulose (BC) assembly during static culture to create more free spaces within the fibrous network. Then, muscle cells were cultured on the loose surface of the BC/PS scaffolds to build biomaterials for hollow organ reconstruction. Our results showed that the BC/PS scaffolds exhibited similar mechanical characters to those in the traditional BC scaffolds. And the pore sizes and porosities of BC/PS scaffolds could be controlled by adjusting the starch c…

Crystallization, structural relaxation and thermal degradation in Poly(L-lactide)/cellulose nanocrystal renewable nanocomposites.

In this work, crystallization, structural relaxation and thermal degradation kinetics of neat Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and its nanocomposites with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and CNC-grafted-PLLA (CNC-g-PLLA) have been studied. Although crystallinity degree of nanocomposites remains similar to that of neat homopolymer, results reveal an increase on the crystallization rate by 1.7-5 times boosted by CNC, which act as nucleating agents during the crystallization process. In addition, structural relaxation kinetics of PLLA chains has been drastically reduced by 53% and 27% with the addition of nea…

Exploring the drug migration process through ethyl cellulose-based films from infrared-spectral insights.

Using novel time-dependent ATR-FTIR technique and two-dimensional correlation analysis (2 Dcos), the migration behavior of drugs with varying water solubilities was investigated with ethyl cellulose (EC) films prepared with different kinds of pore formers and/or plasticizers. Three major stages were determined for drug migration: (1) water migrated from the drug-saturated solution to the other side of the EC film, (2) upon saturation of the film, water migration ceased and enough pore former was dissolved, and (3) upon dissolution of enough pore former, channels were formed between both sides …

Microcrystalline cellulose membrane for re-epithelisation of chronic leg wounds: a prospective open study.

Treatment of chronic leg ulcers remains a major health care issue. Although many reports have examined different topical dressings, none have specifically looked at microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). We aimed to evaluate in a prospective, open study the safety and performance of a MCC membrane (Veloderm) in a series of chronic leg wounds of different aetiology. Fifty-five patients participated in this study. The membrane was applied every 5-10 days for 1 month, immediately after surgical debridement. The wound bed was assessed on days 7, 15 and 30 for erythema, pain, exudate level and infection…

Cellulose-based dual-network hydrogels combining reversible Schiff base interactions and photopolymerized covalent networks.

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels have attracted considerable interest for biomedical applications due to their inherent biocompatibility, structural flexibility, and renewable origin. Among them, cellulose and its derivatives represent particularly promising building blocks; however, the limited mechanical stability and rapid degradation of conventional polysaccharide hydrogels under physiological conditions remain major challenges for their practical implementation. In this work, we report the development of cellulose-based dual-network hydrogels combining reversible Schiff base interactions an…

Controlled functionalization of cellulose nanocrystals directs polymer-specific protein coronas and immune cell interactions.

Polymer coatings are widely used to suppress nonspecific protein adsorption and modulate nanoparticle-cell interactions. However, the biological outcomes of polymer-functionalized nanoparticles remain difficult to predict in complex biological environments because protein corona formation rapidly alters nanoparticle identity. This challenge is particularly pronounced when hydrophobic moieties are incorporated for imaging or therapeutic applications, as they can promote nonspecific interactions at the nano-bio interface. Herein, we establish a modular grafting-to platform based on cellulose nan…

Hydroxypropyl cellulose-based conductive hydrogels with water-content-regulated electromagnetic shielding and multifunctional sensing.

Thermoresponsive polysaccharide hydrogels have attracted considerable attention for wearable electronics owing to their high water content, flexibility, and stimuli-responsive characteristics. However, the role of hydration-state evolution in regulating electromagnetic behavior remains insufficiently understood. Herein, a hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based thermoresponsive conductive hydrogel was developed by integrating a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)/HPC double network with a carbon nanotube (CNT)-based conductive framework. The reversible phase transition of the PNIPAM/HPC network i…

Au-loaded ZnO immobilized cellulose-derived carbon beads for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline.

The elimination of tetracycline antibiotics from aqueous environments remains a significant challenge. In this work, Au-loaded ZnO immobilized cellulose-derived carbon beads (Au/ZnO@C) composite materials, with varying Au molar ratios, were synthesized through a one-pot approach. The Au/ZnO@C composite featured a metal-semiconductor architecture built from Au nanoparticles deposited on ZnO. The introduction of Au nanoparticles can modify the interfacial electronic structure of ZnO and promote charge transfer between Au and ZnO. Meanwhile, using cellulose-derived carbon beads as a carrier effec…

Rapidly polymerized cellulose-based hydrogel pads enabled by bromothymol blue for multifunctional fruit storage.

Hydrogel absorbent pads prolong shelf life of foods, but moisture regulation remains challenging. Herein, a bromothymol blue (BTB)-induced ZnCl2-dissolved cellulose/poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) hydrogel (ZnC/PHEA-B) was developed via rapid free-radical polymerization. BTB concentration gradients (0-80 mg) were established to regulate polymerization behavior and optimize hydrogel performance. BTB accelerated polymerization, reducing the peak-temperature time from 1140 s to 270 s and increasing the peak temperature from 26.1 to 53.3 °C. Based on polymerization behavior, mechanical properties, a…

Sustainable ethyl cellulose fibrous films with nitrogen-carbon dots for fresh-cut apple preservation.

Sustainable active packaging films are increasingly being explored as practical tools for prolonging the freshness of sliced fruits. This study reports the fabrication of ethyl cellulose/poly(ethylene oxide) fibrous films incorporated with nitrogen‑carbon dots (NCDs) using a simple electrospinning technique for active food packaging applications. The NCDs were prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal method using neem leaves as the precursor. As confirmed by HR-TEM, the synthesized NCDs had a quasi-spherical shape with a diameter of ~1.6 to 3.4 nm. In addition, the NCDs incorporated fibrous films e…

Thin carboxymethyl cellulose-shellac bilayer films with asymmetric water vapor transport for grape preservation.

Thin (~30 μm) bilayer films were fabricated via layer-by-layer casting by varying the relative thicknesses of a hydrophilic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) inner layer and a hydrophobic shellac (SHL) outer layer, aiming to achieve direction-dependent water vapor transport and grape preservation. Structural analyses (FT-IR, XRD, SAXS, SEM) confirmed distinct bilayer morphology with a dense, pore-free microstructure and good interfacial adhesion. The CMC and SHL layers retained their characteristic structural features, suggesting limited interlayer diffusion stabilized by hydrogen bonding and van …
