A 53-year-old male was found dead in his home. The deceased's head, almost totally skeletonized, was lying at a distance of about 150 cm from the thorax inlet. The other occupant of the flat was a mongrel sheepdog. The autopsy conducted for the inquest established extensive damage to soft tissue in the head, neck and chest. The second to sixth cervical vertebrae were missing. The seventh cervical vertebra and the right first rib displayed bone lesions. The tissue injuries were attributed in the diagnosis to post-mortem canine gnawing. Cause of death was given as intermittent haemorrhaging of t

Inhalation of methanol by pregnant mice before gestation day nine (gd 9) produces fetal skeletal alterations, principally in the cervical region. The appearance of these defects suggests homeotic shifts in segment identity, patterning, or both. To explore this possibility, detailed morphological analyses of the effects of methanol on fetal skeletal development were done. Pregnant mice were gavaged with 0, 4.0, or 5.0 g/kg methanol (MeOH) split in two doses on gd 7, the most sensitive day for induction of skeletal alterations with methanol. Dams were killed on gd 18 and the fetuses were counted

Pathologic processes that may involve the chest wall include congenital and developmental anomalies, inflammatory and infectious diseases, and soft-tissue and bone tumors. Many of these processes have characteristic radiologic appearances that allow definitive diagnosis. Sternal deformities can be visualized at radiography and their severity quantified with computed tomography (CT). In cervical rib, CT with multiplanar reconstruction may demonstrate relevant anatomic detail and the relationship between bone deformity and arterial compression. In Poland syndrome, radiography reveals an area of …

BACKGROUND: No study specifically analyzes trampoline fracture patterns across a large population. The purpose of this study was to determine such patterns.
METHODS: We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database for trampoline injuries between 2002 and 2011, and the patients were analyzed by age, sex, race, anatomic location of the injury, geographical location of the injury, and disposition from the emergency department (ED). Statistical analyses were performed with SUDAAN 10 software. Estimated expenses were determined using 2010 data.
RESULTS: There were an estima

During dissection of a 70-year-old male donor, several anatomical variations were observed, highlighted by a bilateral variant middle scalene muscle in the superolateral thoracic wall. The variant scalene muscle was traced from the transverse processes of cervical vertebrae to the fourth rib with a pronounced fascial slip. The elongated middle scalene muscle was thick in girth and abnormally wide at its insertion (56.0 mm), which is hypothesized to reflect compensatory hypertrophy secondary to lung carcinoma. A bilateral wrist extensor variant also was observed as well as an anomalous left ver

A 59-year-old previously healthy man with a 50-pack-year smoking history presented with rib pain 1 month after a mechanical fall. Physical examination revealed a 1.5 cm right cervical lymph node and a 0.9 × 0.9 cm scalp nodule. The patient had only noticed the scalp lesion a month prior to presentation. Chest X-ray revealed a 5.8 × 5.0 cm left infrahilar mass. CT angiography demonstrated extensive metastatic mediastinal and right hilar adenopathy as well as hepatic, right adrenal and brain lesions. Pathology from fine-needle aspiration of cervical lymph nodes and punch biopsy of the scalp lesi

Positional asphyxia refers to asphyxia resulting from an abnormal body posture that obstructs pulmonary ventilation. We report two cases in which individuals were unable to escape from positions that interfered with respiration, and cervical fractures were found upon autopsy. In the first case, a female in her 70s was found dead in a prone position on a bed following a traffic accident. Forensic autopsy findings suggested that she died from respiratory failure due to shallow breathing associated with pain from a rib fracture and prolonged prone positioning, possibly influenced by potential spi

OBJECTIVE: To determine the critical load of the osteoligamentous cervical spine in frontal plane. DESIGN: Whole human cervical spine specimens were loaded in axial compression with increasing force until the point of buckling. BACKGROUND: The osteoligamentous cervical spine and the surrounding muscles support the weight of the head and the external loads applied to it. Critical load is the maximum compressive force that the spinal column can sustain before buckling. Critical loads have been obtained for the osteoligamentous thoracolumbar spine (without the rib cage) and the lumbar spine. Crit

Tracheal hypoplasia is a major concern in brachycephalic dogs, but there is no consensus for the trachea in brachycephalic cats. We aimed to compare tracheal length and diameter between normo- and brachycephalic cats using computed tomography (CT) image measurements and evaluate their usefulness in tracheostomy planning. A total of 15 normocephalic and 14 brachycephalic cats were included in the study. Tracheas of normocephalic cats were significantly longer compared with brachycephalic cats. No difference was detected in tracheal diameter between normocephalic and brachycephalic cats. Both gr

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a condition caused by compression of the neurovascular structures leading to the arm passing through the t … t undergo first rib resection and anterior scalenectomy, as well as resection of any rudimentary or cervical ribs. In the case of arterial TOS, the subclavian artery often requires reconstruction as well. Regardless of the type of TOS encountered, proper treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach.

A rare presentation of arterial thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is described in a young woman. Arterial TOS caused by a cervical rib produced acute upper extremity ischemia due to subclavian artery aneurysm formation. Clinical presentation also included left hemiparesis caused by right subclavian artery thrombosis and retrograde embolization of thrombus via the common carotid artery to the right middle cerebral artery distribution. Surgical repair of the subclavian artery was performed, but permanent neurologic deficit remained. Acute thrombosis of the right subclavian artery can produce cerebr…

In this study, the axial skeletons of two Early Paleocene marsupials, Mayulestes ferox and Pucadelphys andinus, were analyzed functionally and compared to that of six South American and three Australian species of extant marsupials. In the case of the South American opossums, myological data of the epaxial musculature were collected and analyzed and osteological-myological associations were related to locomotor behavior. Various features of the vertebral column that relate to diet or to locomotor or postural patterns were pointed out. These features include: the craniocaudal development of the

CASE REPORT: Perthes syndrome, or traumatic asphyxia syndrome, results from a severe crush injury of the thorax. It manifests itself with facial and upper chest petechiae, subconjunctival hemorrhages, cervical cyanosis, and occasionally neurological symptoms. A patient who had been incarcerated under a block of marble presented with severe traumatic asphyxia syndrome complicated by pulmonary contusion, fractures of the right clavicle and the 8th and 9th ribs, minimal right hemothorax, liver contusion, and bilateral optic disc edema.
COMMENTS: To our knowledge, we present the first case of Per

A morphology based imaging review is presented of the characteristic skeletal deformities associated with acardius anceps in three acardiac twins. These fetuses demonstrated poorly developed skulls, limb reduction defects, and phocomelia of the upper limbs, as well as narrow thoracic cages with or without the complete development of ribs, clavicles, scapulae, and cervical, thoracic, or lumbar vertebrae. However, their lower limbs and pelvic girdles were almost normal. The authors conclude that skeletal development is likely to be jeopardized in the area adjacent to the heart and in the cephali

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is an unusual skeletal disorder characterized by congenital fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae which can be sporadic or familial. KFS emerges to be a failure of the normal segmentation and fusion of the mesodermal somites during 3(rd) and 8(th) weeks of embryonic development. The triad of low posterior hairline, short neck, and restricted neck motion is present only in 50% and often associated with scoliosis, spina bifida, Sprengel's deformity, cervical ribs, deafness, cleft palate, renal anomalies, congenital heart defects, and so on because of heterogeneous …
