The binding of EPF to lymphocytes stimulates the release of soluble mediators, active in T cell dependent reactions, namely the rosette inhibition test and the adoptive transfer of contact sensitivity. Two patients with a trophoblastic tumour (one with an invasive mole and one with a choriocarcinoma) had early pregnancy factor (EPF; detected by rosette inhibition test) in serum. In both cases the EPF already disappeared during surgery which suggests that EPF could be a useful and sensitive tumour marker if laboratory technology for its detection could be improved.

Previous investigations demonstrated three taxonomic groups among 22 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium smegmatis.
