The change in illicit drug use from 1975 to 1978 was studied in Chicago veterans. Barbiturates and amphetamine use has decreased significantly. Nearly a sevenfold increase in pentazocine use has occurred. All but one of the pentazocine users added tripelennamine to the intravenous or subcutaneous injections. Sixty-four instances of medical or psychiatric complications including seizures, abscesses, depression, and psychosis occurred in the 69 pentazocine and tripelennamine users. We conducted a case-control study to evaluate severe physical abuse of the elderly treated in two Chicago area Level I trauma centers. This report details whether physicians are adequately reporting cases of abuse to Adult Protective Services (APS), and assesses 1 year. The failure to report two-thirds of the cases and the substantially higher risk of death during the first year after hospitalization indicates the need for improved identification, reporting, and intervention. Using data from the Welfare, Children, and Families project (1999), a probability sample of 2,280 low-income women with children living in low-income neighborhoods in Boston, Chicago, and San Antonio, we examine the effects of relationship violence before age 18 and in the past year on frequency of adult intoxication. Two antigen detection systems, Clearview Chlamydia (Unipath Ltd., Bedford, United Kingdom) and Chlamydiazyme (Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Ill.), were compared with culture for the diagnosis of chlamydia infection in women attending gynecological clinics. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a unique retrovirus associated with specific malignancies of T cells in humans. The virus is endemic to Japan, the Caribbean, Africa, and the southeastern United States. We report here the first case of HTLV-I-associated lymphoma in an atypical host. The incidence of antibodies in this individual with a T-cell malignancy strongly suggests HTLV-I virus as the causative agent. Direct identification of viral DNA using an HTLV-I-specific probe provides definitive evidence of infection.
