The purpose of this study was to investigate the present physical, mental, and psycho-social health of Vietnamese refugee children. Questionnaires were sent or given to adoptive families, foster families, and Vietnamese children living in the United States with their family units. Otitis media, respiratory ailments, and varicella constituted a large number of their initial medical problems. Severe nightmares and temper tantrums occurred frequently during their first year. It was found that the children's health and emotional problems improved markedly after the first year. Despite stormy pasts

The intergenerational continuity of child maltreatment (CM) is a growing public health concern. Identifying modifiable risk and protective factors involved in these cycles is crucial. A previous scoping review synthesized the literature on psychosocial factors associated with intergenerational CM up to 2018. Since then, a sizable number of studies have been published; this updated review aims to summarize this recent literature. We conducted a comprehensive search across five major databases (PsycINFO, Scopus, Medline, Social Work Abstracts, and ProQuest Dissertations/Theses) from November 201

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mothers play a significant role as primary caregivers for children with congenital heart disease (CHD) within the family. Given the complex health needs of children with CHD, coping strategies are needed to deal with the challenges associated with caring for their children with the condition. Coping mechanisms encompass fostering resilience, seeking support, and maintaining a positive outlook to navigate stress, uncertainty, and obstacles throughout their child's medical journey with CHD. The objective of this study is to explore the coping strategies employed by moth

BACKGROUND: The critical need for assistive technology (AT) for children with brain injury is recognized. Despite its importance, there is scant literature on how delays and denials in the provision of AT affect recovery and rehabilitation.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the complex ecosystem of AT usage and barriers to access, drawing upon the perspectives of clinicians, vendors, and parents in an exploratory qualitative study.
DESIGN: This is a companion study to a quantitative retrospective medical chart review using grounded theory methods. Two focus groups with clinical staff, one focus group wi

BACKGROUND: Decision-making during the end-of-life (EOL) phase for children with cancer is extremely difficult for parents. We synthesized the qualitative experiences of children with cancer, parents, and healthcare professionals (HCPs), and their social interactions during the EOL decision-making process in the pediatric oncology setting.
METHODS: Meta-ethnography was used to conduct a systematic review and meta-synthesis. We searched four online databases to identify original studies published in English and Japanese and examined 21 relevant studies. Two Japanese reviewers discussed the dif

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have investigated how caregivers manage stressors associated with their child's spinal cord injury (SCI) and how these patterns relate to their child's coping and adjustment. The current study explored empirically derived coping profiles among caregivers of youth with SCI and the relation of these patterns to parent and youth psychosocial outcomes.
METHOD: This was a cross-sectional survey of 318 children (ages 1 to 18) and a primary caregiver. Participants completed measures assessing demographics, coping, quality of life (QOL), anxiety, and depression. We utilized

Feeling loved by one's parents is critical for children's health and well-being. How can such feelings be fostered? A vital feature of loving interactions is reciprocal self-disclosure, where individuals disclose intimate information about themselves. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we examined whether encouraging reciprocal self-disclosure in parent-child dyads would make children feel more loved during the conversation. Participants were 218 children (ages 8-13, 50% girls, 94% Dutch) and one of their parents (ages 28-56, 62% women, 90% Dutch). Parent-child dyads received a list of 14 quest

Children in foster care frequently have histories of physical/sexual abuse and neglect, increasing their risk for externalizing behaviors (EB; e.g., aggression). According to the differential susceptibility theory, children with reactive temperaments (e.g., negative emotionality) may be particularly vulnerable to early maltreatment, but may also benefit the most from environmental enrichment such as family cohesion. In a high-risk longitudinal sample of 82 children adopted from foster care in Los Angeles County from 1996 and 2001, we examined predictions of EB from childhood to adolescence/you

BACKGROUND: The long-term consequences of intrauterine exposure to Class A drugs are still relatively undocumented, and much of the literature relates to the North American experience, where cocaine use predominates. In Britain, heroin and amphetamine use is more common and, within Britain, patterns of drug use vary. Clearly the long-term educational and welfare needs of these children will be enhanced if the behavioural, developmental and child-care outcomes are known. This study attempts to explore some of these issues.
METHODS: The developmental, behavioural and child protection outcomes i

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between parental incarceration and housing insecurity among a recent, nationally representative sample of children in the US.
STUDY DESIGN: Data from the 2024 National Survey of Children's Health, a nationally representative survey of noninstitutionalized US children aged 0-17 years, were examined. Weighted multinomial and logistic regression models were estimated to examine associations between parental incarceration and several indicators of housing insecurity (eg, frequent moves, homelessness, caregiver eviction stress, missed housing payments), ad

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a stigmatised chronic pain condition, commonly experienced by females of child-bearing age. Fibromyalgia negatively impacts on quality of life, mental and physical health, and relationships. However, little is known about how women and birthing people (WBP)1 living with fibromyalgia adjust to new parenthood. The current study aimed to address this literature gap.
METHODS: Fifteen WBP with fibromyalgia were interviewed about their experiences of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using reflex

Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases among children, affecting approximately one in ten globally. Preventing asthma in the early life benefits individuals both during childhood and into adulthood. During the critical prenatal period, exposure to diverse maternal microbiota may enhance immune tolerance in fetal and neonatal stages. This exposure can train the immunity of innate immune cells through functional reprogramming of epigenetic mechanisms, potentially altering susceptibility to allergic diseases like asthma. Additionally, microbiota transmission during childbirth, close

BACKGROUND: Extensive research supports the existence of a "cycle of violence" that links exposure to parental violence during childhood (i.e., witnessing interparental violence and child maltreatment) with intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. However, there is still a need to explore the mechanisms through which early exposure to parental violence may foster IPV perpetration during adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examine the mediating role of attachment insecurities and gender differences in the relationship between exposure to parental violence during childhood and IPV perp

BACKGROUND: Conventional cost-effectiveness analysis [CEA] using cost per QALY thresholds may counteract other incentives introduced to foster development of treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases. Therefore, alternative economic evaluation methods were explored, namely Discrete Choice Experiment Willingness to Pay (DCE-WTP) and Relative Social Willingness to Pay (RS-WTP), to value interventions for an ultra-rare childhood disease, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2).
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Treatment for CLN2 was valued from a citizen's ('social') perspective using DCE-WTP

African American women are at higher risk of poor mental ill health compared with other racial and ethnic groups in the United States. For low-income and homeless African American populations, the risk of poor mental ill health is even higher. The purpose of our study was to learn what programmes at a long-term transitional living centre helped at-risk and homeless African American mothers to succeed on their own, in accordance with self-identified goals. We conducted ten focus group interviews with 39 graduates of a long-term transitional living centre located in a Midwestern city, and an ind

Every year in France, nearly 50 infants live in a prison nursery with their mother. According to French law, infants can live with their mother in the prison nursery until they reach 18 months of age. The international community is concerned about the lack of validated social, medical and legal data on these infants living in prison. This was a retrospective and descriptive study. Medical and paramedical files of the General Council of Île-et-Vilaine, France, were studied. Every infant born between 1998 and 2013 while their mother was in prison were included. Fifty-four files were collected. T

Background and Aims. Research on child maltreatment has largely overlooked the under-five age group and focuses primarily on quantitative measurement. This mixed-methods study of maltreated children (N = 92) entering care (age 6-60 months) combines a quantitative focus on the associations between care journey characteristics and mental health outcomes with a qualitative exploration of maltreatment in four different families. Methods. Care journey data was obtained from social care records; mental health and attachment assessments were carried out following entry to care; qualitative data compr

It is unclear whether there is variation in the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on child peer problems, and which individual and environmental factors might predict such variation. This study uses data from 7,712 children (3,974, 51.5% boys) aged 4 from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Children were cross-categorized based on exposure to IPV from birth to 3 years, and mother-rated peer problems at age 4, into 4 groups: Resilient, Non-resilient, Vulnerable and Competent. Between-group differences in maternal depression, maternal life events, parenting, att

AIM: To describe household change over a 10-year period of tremendous social, political, economic and health transformation in South Africa using data from the Agincourt health and demographic surveillance system in the rural northeast of South Africa.
METHODS: Examination of household structure and composition at three points: 1992, 1997, and 2003. These three years loosely represent conditions immediately before the elections (1992), short term post-elections (1997), and longer term (2003), and span a period of notable increase in HIV prevalence.
RESULTS: Average household size decreased a

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: For children with esophageal atresia (EA) or tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), the first years of life can be associated with many problems. Little is known about the long-term function of children who underwent repair as neonates. This study evaluates outcome and late sequelae of children with EA/TEF.
METHODS: Medical records of infants with esophageal anomalies (May 1972 through December 1990) were reviewed. Study parameters included demographics, dysphagia, frequent respiratory infections (> 3/yr), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), frequent choking, leak, stricture
