UNLABELLED: Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in Chile and worldwide. Although its greatest burden affects older adults, its impact on individuals of working age is concerning. Strain P3-BQ1T is a Gram-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming bacterium with gliding motility and filamentous cells. BACKGROUND: The Camarones River Valley, located in the extreme north of Chile, is characterized by high environmental arsenic levels and an arid desert. It has been inhabited by humans for the past 7,000 years. Evidence exists for chronic arsenic poisoning in both prehispanic and present populations residing in the area. Copper mine tailings have been discharged around the city of Chanaral, in northern Chile, for more than 60 years. This report summarizes a 17-month long monitoring study of species richness and biodiversity at five intertidal sites around the point of the tailing discharge. Total dissolved copper in sites close to the point of discharge varied between 8.72 microg/l and 34.15 microg/l, showing that there has not been a significant reduction since 1994.
