Huntington's disease (HD) results from degeneration of striatal neurons. Choroid plexus (CP) cells secrete neurotrophic factors, and CP transplants are neuroprotective in rat models of HD. To determine if similar neuroprotective effects could be obtained in primates, porcine CP was encapsulated in alginate capsules. Choroid plexus carcinoma(CPC) is a rare intracranial neoplasm that usually arises in the supra-tentorial region of infants. We report an adult case of CPC that arose in the foramen Luschka. PURPOSE: Latanoprost, a prostaglandin F2a analogue and ocular hypotensive agent, alters extracellular matrix and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), including MMP-1, within tissues of the uveoscleral outflow pathway. We report a case of an incidental pineal cyst discovered on MR imaging that progressed to a choroid plexus papilloma. The MR features of pineal cysts, the difficulty of distinguishing benign cysts from cystic neoplasms, and the implications for surgical management are discussed.

Two unusual uveal tumors occurring in eyes enucleated for presumed malignant melanoma are discussed. One was a leiomyoma of the ciliary body, affecting a 22-year-old female, the other a hemangiopericytoma of the choroid in an 84-year-old male patient. The latter case is the fourth intraocular hemangiopericytoma reported in the literature to date. The histopathologic diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.

A case of choroid plexus papilloma of the III ventricle associated with hydrocephalus in an 1-month-old boy is reported. The tumor was removed after placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt; however, the histologically mainly benign tumor grew very rapidly. The cause of this rapid growth may have been a drop in the intraventricular pressure after the shunting procedure.

A complete ocular examination is essential for the correct diagnosis of a malignant melanoma of the choroid. The single, most important technique is indirect ophthalmoscopy associated with biomicroscopy of the fundus. Fluorescein angiography may provide additional arguments for malignancy, but with this method it is not always possible to differentiate a malignant melanoma from a suspected naevus or even a choroidal metastasis. Choroid plexus carcinoma was diagnosed in a 10-year-old maltese dog with chief complaint of progressive ataxia and head tilt. No abnormalities was observed on hemogram, radiographs of the skull, and electroencepharograph (EEG). Neurological examination suggested central vestibular lesions. On the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination, images after contrast enhancement with Gadolinium DTPA-dimeglumine showed a rough circular lesion with an increased signal intensity in caudal fossa. This lesion was histopathologically confirmed to be choroid plexus carcinoma.

Thirteen eyes of 55 consecutive patients treated with brachytherapy for malignant melanoma of the choroid developed postirradiation cataracts. Cataract development was more common in older patients and in patients with larger and more anterior tumors. Eleven eyes had extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. Initial visual improvement occurred in 91% of eyes, with an average improvement of 5.5 lines. We are using Cobalt 60 plaques at Curie Institute since 1968 for the treatment of malignant choroidal melanoma. We reviewed a series of 79 patients treated between 1982 and 1984 with a minimal follow up of 5 years. Tumors thickness varies between 2 and 11 mm with a mean thickness of 5.7 mm. Previous series that described fetuses with choroid plexus cysts have been too small to determine whether there is an association with trisomy 18 sufficiently high to warrant amniocentesis. To address this issue, we studied the incidence of choroid plexus cysts and other ultrasonographic abnormalities in 26 consecutive fetuses (13.5 to 36 weeks' gestation) with trisomy 18. A 67-year-old woman presented with signs of severe intraocular inflammation and secondary glaucoma.
