A Description of Health Care Utilization in Young Adults With Chronic Overlapping Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs) affect young adults and pose significant challenges in medical care. This study aimed to describe the types and number of current and past medical providers and medications used by young adults with COPCs and to explore associations between health care utilization, clinical pain, and psychosocial factors. METHODS: Fifty young adults (mean age: 27.16 y) with COPCs were recruited and completed online questionnaires assessing demographics, pain intensity and interference, number of pain conditions, health care providers consulted, medicatio

Changes in Physical Health After Supported Housing: Results from the Collaborative Initiative to End Chronic Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: The permanent supported housing model is known to improve housing outcomes, but there has been sparse research on the effects of supported housing on physical health. Various organizations including the National Academy of Sciences have called for research in this area. OBJECTIVE: This observational multi-site outcome study examined changes in physical health among chronically homeless adults participating in a comprehensive supported housing program and the associations between changes in physical health, housing status, and trust in primary care providers. DESIGN: Data are pres

Hypertension management in the digital era.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hypertension (HTN) is the most common chronic disease in the United States, and the standard model of office-based care delivery continues to yield suboptimal outcomes, with approximately 50% of affected patients not achieving blood pressure (BP) control. Poor population-level BP control has been primarily attributed to therapeutic inertia and low patient engagement resulting in significant and preventable morbidity and mortality. This review will highlight the rationale for a reengineered model of care delivery for populations with HTN. RECENT FINDINGS: New technologies no

Patients Describe their Lived Experiences of Battling to Live with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) has never comprehensively been examined from a lived experience perspective. Patients generally have a poorer quality of life than people with other chronic pain conditions. This study aimed to understand the essence of living with CRPS. Data were collected from 17 patients via in-depth interviews. Hermeneutic discussions with four health professionals generated deeper insights. Internet blogs and a book containing patient stories were included for theme verification and triangulation. CRPS is seen as a war-like experience and five themes were identified w

Barriers to Long COVID Care in the U.S.: An Application of Levesque et al.'s Access Framework.

Long COVID is a condition that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic in individuals who developed the multi-system chronic condition after a COVID-19 infection. During the pandemic in the United States (U.S.), these "COVID long-haulers" navigated a complex and overburdened health care system in pursuit of diagnoses and treatments. This qualitative secondary analysis used the 2013 Levesque et al. Conceptual Model of Healthcare Access to examine multidimensional health care access issues faced by 29 COVID long-haulers in the U.S. Our analysis showed that long-haulers faced complementary issues from

Description and students' perceptions of a required geriatric clerkship in postacute rehabilitative care.

This article describes medical students' evaluation of a geriatric clerkship in postacute rehabilitative care settings. This was a cross-sectional study of fourth-year medical students who completed a mandatory 2-week rotation at a postacute care facility. Students were provided with three instructional methods: Web-based interactive learning modules; small-group sessions with geriatric faculty; and Geriatric Interdisciplinary Care Summary (GICS), a grid that students used to formulate comprehensive interdisciplinary care plans for their own patients. After the rotation, students evaluated the

Healthcare Warranty Policies Optimization for Chronic Diseases Based on Delay Time Concept.

Warranties for healthcare can be greatly beneficial for cost reductions and improvements in patient satisfaction. Under healthcare warranties, healthcare providers receive a lump sum payment for the entire care episode, which covers a bundle of healthcare services, including treatment decisions during initial hospitalization and subsequent readmissions, as well as disease-monitoring plans composed of periodic follow-ups. Higher treatment intensities and more radical monitoring strategies result in higher medical costs, but high treatment intensities reduce the baseline readmission rates. This

Impact of a three-subject, dual-track, interactive care model on hospitalized patients with diabetic foot.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot (DF) is a severe chronic complication of diabetes, associated with high amputation risk and mortality. Conventional nursing often neglects patients' psychological needs and long-term self-management, limiting comprehensive rehabilitation. Interactive nursing has shown promise in chronic disease care, yet systematic evaluations of its multidimensional effects remain scarce. This study assessed a three-subject, dual-track, interactive care (TSDTIC) model on wound healing, psychological state, and quality of life in DF patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study

A pilot study of how information and communication technology may contribute to health promotion among elderly spousal carers in Norway.

The objective of this pilot Norwegian intervention study was to explore whether use of information and communication technology (ICT) by informal carers of frail elderly people living at home would enable them to gain more knowledge about chronic illness, caring and coping, establish an informal support network and reduce stress and related mental health problems. Potential participants were close relatives of an elderly person with a diagnosis of a chronic illness dwelling in the same household who wished to continue caring for their relative at home, were 60 years of age or older, had been c

Musculoskeletal pain illness perceptions: factor structure of the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised.

BACKGROUND: The Revised Illness Perceptions Questionnaire (IPQ-R) is commonly used to measure illness perceptions. We tested whether the structure of the IPQ-R was appropriate for use with primary care musculoskeletal pain patients. METHODS: Confirmatory (C) and exploratory (E) factor analyses (FA) were used to test whether the structure of the IPQ-R was supported for patients with knee pain (n = 393), hand pain (n = 2113) and back pain (n = 1591). CFA was used to test whether the timeline acute/chronic, timeline cyclical, consequences, personal control, treatment control, illness coherence a
