BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) has been widely used to treat patients with depressive disorder to prevent relapse. The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of newly developed MBCT program as an adjuvant to pharmacotherapy in the treatment of patients with panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder.
METHODS: Forty-six patients with panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder were assigned to either MBCT or an anxiety disorder education (ADE) program for a period of 8 weeks. The Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Hamilton Depression Rating

Intolerance of uncertainty, cognitive avoidance, and positive beliefs about worry have been well researched in adults with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), but few studies have explored these aspects in adolescent clinical samples. To address this gap, we compared the three cognitive variables amongst 12-18 year-olds with diagnoses of GAD (n = 46), those with other anxiety disorders (n = 18), and a group with low self-reported anxiety (n = 38). Adolescents with GAD reported significantly higher intolerance of uncertainty and positive beliefs about worry relative to their peers with other an

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to use cluster analysis based on the trajectory of five cognitive-emotional processes (worry, rumination, metacognition, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) over time to explore differences in clinical and performance variables in primary care patients with emotional symptoms.
METHODS: We compared the effect of adding transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioural therapy (TD-CBT) to treatment as usual (TAU) according to cluster membership and sought to determine the variables that predicted cluster membership. 732 participants completed scales abo

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of the minor neurocognitive diseases in the clinical course of dementia before the clinical symptoms' appearance is the holy grail of neuropsychological research. The R4Alz battery is a novel and valid tool that was designed to assess cognitive control in people with minor cognitive disorders. The aim of the current study is the R4Alz battery's extension (namely R4Alz-R), enhanced by the design and administration of extra episodic memory tasks, as well as extra cognitive control tasks, towards improving the overall R4Alz discriminant validity.
METHODS: The study comp

BACKGROUND: Patients with stress-related mental disorders often report cognitive impairment, but studies investigating objective cognitive impairment in patients with stress-related disorders have produced inconsistent findings.
AIM: The primary aim of this study was to investigate objective cognitive functioning in patients diagnosed with the stress-related disorders adjustment disorder or exhaustion disorder, compared to a healthy normative group. Secondary aims were to conduct subgroup analyses of cognitive functioning between the diagnostic groups and explore associations between self-rep

BACKGROUND: There are increasing data linking sleep apnea with cognitive impairment. We aimed to clarify the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and cognition. Detailed attention was assigned to the potential role of central versus obstructive apneic pauses in cognitive impairment.
METHODS: Patients with suspected SDB were prospectively enrolled, and a complex sleep study was performed that included overnight polysomnography. A revised version of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-R) was used to assess cognition, evaluating overall cognition and individual subdomains.

The present study aimed to investigate differences in circulating thyroid hormone levels, gender, education, depressive symptoms, and cognitive performance among patients with cognitive impairment, and also to examine their associations, as well as that of cognitive decline, with 5-year mortality. Between 1998 and 2017, a hospital-based, single-centre (Neurology Department of the General Hospital in Vienna, Austria), retrospective follow-up study enrolled 2102 patients with mild to severe cognitive impairment (grouped into subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer'

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is present in bipolar disorder (BD) during the acute and remitted phases and hampers functional recovery. However, there is currently no clinically available treatment with direct and lasting effects on cognitive impairment in BD. We will examine the effect of a novel form of cognitive remediation, action-based cognitive remediation (ABCR), on cognitive impairment in patients with BD, and explore the neural substrates of potential treatment efficacy on cognition.
METHODS/DESIGN: The trial has a randomized, controlled, parallel-group design. In total, 58 patien

Long-term stress as well as physiological aging result in similar immunological and hormonal disturbances including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis depletion, aberrant immune response (regulatory T-cells, Tregs, and T(h17)-lymphocyte accumulation) and decreased dehydroepian-drosterone synthesis both in the brain and in the adrenal glands. Since the main mechanisms of inflammation control, "prompt" (stress hormones) and "delayed" (Tregs), are broken, serum cytokine levels increase and become sufficient for blood-brain-barrier disruption. As a result peripheral cytokines penetrate into the

OBJECTIVES: The cognitive-behavioral model of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) implicates impaired cognition; yet existing evidence of cognitive impairment in the disorder is often inconsistent. To date, cognitive performance in BDD has not been measured utilizing the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV), a gold standard cognitive assessment in clinical settings. Accordingly, this study compared WAIS-IV performance between individuals with BDD and healthy controls.
METHODS: Participants included 59 BDD patients and 56 controls. Cognitive performance was evaluated via the

BACKGROUND: Although cognitive impairments occur in approximately 70% of individuals with a psychotic spectrum disorder (PSS) and have a substantial impact on daily functioning, they are often underrecognized in clinical practice. Due to their limited specificity, they are not included in the DSM classification criteria. Historically, cognitive deficits were already central to the concept of dementia praecox.
AIM: To provide an overview of the literature on cognition in psychosis.
METHOD: This article summarizes the existing literature on cognition in PSS.
RESULTS: Patients with PSS general

Diabetes mellitus has become a global public health challenge, with a steadily rising prevalence that imposes substantial socioeconomic burdens. Over recent years, the gut-brain axis (GBA) has garnered significant attention as a crucial biological framework. GBA denotes the intricate network of bidirectional signaling between the gut and the brain via neuronal, endocrine, and immunological pathways, with the connections among gut bacteria, gut barrier function, and neuroendocrine factors significantly influencing the progression of diabetes mellitus. Studies indicate that disruptions in gut mi

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Tuft cells, a type of epithelial cell in the gut, play a pivotal role in regulating type 2 immunity and maintaining the gut barrier. However, their role in cognitive impairments remains unclear.
METHODS: We compared behavioral performance between male tuft cell-absent mice (Pou2f3-/-) and their wild-type (WT) littermates. We analyzed gut microbiota using fecal 16S rRNA, measured gut permeability via FITC-dextran assay, and detected CD4+-T cells and type 2 innate lymphoid cells by flow cytometry in both genotypes. Co-housing and fecal microbiota transplantation experiments w

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a key regulator of neuroplasticity, synaptic integrity and cognitive function and its dysregulation has been implicated across major psychiatric disorders. However, its transdiagnostic association with cognitive performance remains incompletely understood. In this cross-sectional study, 160 participants were examined, including individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls (HC) (n = 40 per group). Serum BDNF concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

Pathological doubt in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests core deficits in memory and metamemory, but the nature of these deficits and their response to treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating (a) whether memory and metamemory problems in OCD are due to retrieval or encoding processes, and (b) the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on these functions. Sixty OCD patients and 60 matched healthy controls completed 3 episodic memory tasks involving different stimuli, with assessments of judgment-of-learning and feeling-of-knowing. OCD pati

OBJECTIVES: Although social support is a major dimension of well-being, there is a lack of appropriate tools to assess it in older adults with neurocognitive disorders. This study aims to provide a validation of an adapted version of the Perceived Social Support Questionnaire (PSSQ) for this population. A secondary objective was to investigate whether psychosocial and cognitive outcomes varied according to the category of persons perceived as available (family, professionals, friends, residents).
METHOD: 113 nursing home residents with neurocognitive disorders were administered the adapted PS

Empathy encompasses the ability to recognize the emotional states of others (cognitive empathy), adjust one’s own feelings accordingly (affective empathy), and develop the motivation to provide support (compassionate empathy). Emotional categorical congruence describes the similarity between the emotions we attribute to another person or experience ourselves in response to their situation and that person’s original emotional state. Some authors argue that categorical congruence is an essential feature of empathy, while others emphasize that similarity regarding the hedonic quality of the respe

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is widely described as an evidence-based psychological treatment, including within eating disorder (ED) care. However, evidence claims are only valid within the boundaries of the populations, outcome measures, and service contexts represented in the underlying trials. This paper argues that CBT is not universally evidence-based and that extending its evidentiary status to neurodivergent people and Indigenous, First Nations, and Māori communities is not currently justified. Drawing on decolonial and neurodiversity scholarship and lived experience-led literatu

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the clinical utility of the long-term memory sign (LTMS), which is defined as self-reported long-term memory loss that is equal to or greater than self-reported short-term memory loss, and hypothesized to be a sign of functional cognitive disorders.
METHOD: The LTMS was established using two standardized clinical interview prompts in 568 consecutive patients (MAGE = 64.25, SD = 13.03) referred for neuropsychological evaluation. Patients were categorized into five diagnostic groups: dementia (n = 140), mild neurocognitive disorder (n = 245), primary psychiatric d
