Neural correlates of cognitive control in gambling disorder: a systematic review of fMRI studies.

Decreased cognitive control over the urge to be involved in gambling activities is a core feature of Gambling Disorder (GD). Cognitive control can be differentiated into several cognitive sub-processes pivotal in GD clinical phenomenology, such as response inhibition, conflict monitoring, decision-making, and cognitive flexibility. This article aims to systematically review fMRI studies, which investigated the neural mechanisms underlying diminished cognitive control in GD. We conducted a comprehensive literature search and collected neuropsychological and neuroimaging data investigating cogni…

Subjective complaints of cognitive symptoms are related to psychometric findings of memory deficits in patients with HIV-1 infection.

Eighty-five subjects at various stages of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection and 39 seronegative controls underwent neurological and neuropsychological evaluation to assess the relationship between cognitive test results and subjective complaints (cognitive, affective, motor, and other). The effect of psychiatric disorders on the association between cognitive performance and complaints of the patients was also examined. Patients with symptomatic infection had higher frequency of complaints than subjects at asymptomatic stage. Detailed neuropsychological examination confirmed a stro

Preliminary Examination of Associations Between Psychological Flexibility Processes of Change and Quality of Life in Digital Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Autistic Adults.

An understanding of the relations between psychological flexibility processes and quality of life among autistic adults could help inform treatment development to improve the acceptability of mental healthcare among autistic adults. This pre-registered (https://osf.io/t3pws) secondary analysis of a mixed-methods pilot open trial provides a preliminary test of which subprocesses of psychological flexibility are associated with improvements in quality of life among a sample of 56 autistic adults who received a 6-week digital self-help acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) intervention. Deletion of the 5-HT3A receptor reduces behavioral persistence and enhances flexibility.

The 5-HT3A receptor is the only ionotropic serotonin receptor and has been implicated in cognitive functions, yet its specific role remains … he new rule in the switching task significantly faster than wild-type controls, indicating enhanced cognitive flexibility. These findings suggest that the 5-HT3A receptor plays a role in regulating the balance between behavioral persistence and flexibility, normally biasing this balance toward persistence under normal physiological conditions. This mechanism may underl …

Neurocognitive Profiles in Parents of Autistic Children and Parents of Children with Anorexia Nervosa.

There is growing evidence to suggest an overlap between autism spectrum disorder (autism) and anorexia nervosa (AN), both of which are known to be highly heritable conditions. The aim of this study was to explore overlapping behavioural and clinical characteristics, and neurocognitive profiles related to the autism dyad of symptoms among parents. Parents of autistic children, parents of children with AN, and parents of typically developing children completed a battery of behavioural questionnaires and neurocognitive tasks related to social cognition and cognitive flexibility. Parents of autist…

Abstract task representations for inference and control.

Behavioral flexibility depends on our capacity to build and leverage abstract knowledge about tasks. Recently, two separate lines of research have implicated distinct brain networks in representing abstract task information: a frontoparietal cortical network, and a network involving the medial temporal lobe (MTL), medial prefrontal, and orbitofrontal cortex (OMPFC). These observations have mostly been made in parallel, with little attempt to understand their relationship. Here, we hypothesize that abstract task representations in these networks differ primarily in format, not content. Namely,

The representational geometry of cognitive maps under cognitive control.

Recent work has shown that the brain abstracts non-spatial relationships between entities or task states into representations called cognitive maps. Here, we investigate how cognitive control enables flexible top-down selection of goal-relevant information from multidimensional cognitive maps retrieved from memory. We examine the relationship between cognitive control and representational geometry by conducting parallel analyses of functional magnetic resonance imaging data and recurrent neural network models trained to perform the same task. We find both stable map-like representations in a m

Cognitive abilities on transitive inference using a novel touchscreen technology for mice.

Cognitive abilities are impaired in neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia. Preclinical models with strong endophenotypes relevant to cognitive dysfunctions offer a valuable resource for therapeutic development. However, improved assays to test higher order cognition are needed. We employed touchscreen technology to design a complex transitive inference (TI) assay that requires cognitive flexibility and relational learning. C57BL/6J (B6) mice with good cognitive skills and BTBR T+tf/J (BTBR), a model of ASD with cognitive deficits, were evaluat…

Unravelling the impact of frontal lobe impairment for social dysfunction in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 is an autosomal dominant multisystemic disorder affecting muscular and extra muscular systems, including the central nervous system. Cerebral involvement in myotonic dystrophy type 1 is associated with subtle cognitive and behavioural disorders, of major impact on socio-professional adaptation. The social dysfunction and its potential relation to frontal lobe neuropsychology remain under-evaluated in this pathology. The neuroanatomical network underpinning that disorder is yet to disentangle. Twenty-eight myotonic dystrophy type 1 adult patients (mean age: 46 years ol

Neural correlates of reversal learning in frontotemporal dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that results in disinhibition and difficulty with flexible responding when provided feedback. Inflexible responding is observed early in the course of the illness and contributes to the financial and social morbidities of FTD. Reversal learning is an established cognitive paradigm that indexes flexible responding in the face of feedback signaling a change in reinforcement contingencies, with components of reversal learning associated with specific neurotransmitter systems. The objective of the study was to evaluate the ne
