Is vision continuous with cognition? The case for cognitive impenetrability of visual perception.

Although the study of visual perception has made more progress in the past 40 years than any other area of cognitive science, there remain major disagreements as to how closely vision is tied to cognition. This target article sets out some of the arguments for both sides (arguments from computer vision, neuroscience, psychophysics, perceptual learning, and other areas of vision science) and defends the position that an important part of visual perception, corresponding to what some people have called early vision, is prohibited from accessing relevant expectations, knowledge, and utilities in

Addressing demand artifacts in psychological research (and beyond).

Demand artifacts stem from participants' beliefs about treatment effects and motivations to respond in accordance with these beliefs. These artifacts typically build on subtle cues that exert extraneous influences unbeknownst to researchers, through processes that are not part of their stated theory. Demand artifacts threaten the internal and external validity of studies, and they have been supported across a wide range of psychological domains (e.g., clinical, cognitive, and social psychology, psychology of perception) and beyond (e.g., consumer research, experimental economics, psychosomatic

Effects of a simultaneous lip tube and auditory feedback perturbation on the production of the French vowel /u/.

This study investigates the relative weight of somatosensory and auditory feedback in the production of the French vowel /u/ in a simultaneous lip tube and formant shift perturbation. To do so, 20 native Quebec French speakers were recruited. Three experimental conditions involving a lip tube, with each displaying a different auditory condition, were devised. In the first condition, auditory feedback was corrected by canceling the auditory effects of the lip tube using a formant shift. In the second condition, the corrected auditory feedback was replaced with white noise. Finally, access to na

Generative Forecasting of Brain Activity Enhances Alzheimer's Classification and Interpretation.

Understanding the relationship between cognition and intrinsic brain activity through purely data-driven approaches remains a significant challenge in neuroscience. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) offers a non-invasive method to monitor regional neural activity, providing a rich and complex spatiotemporal data structure. Deep learning has shown promise in capturing these intricate representations. However, the limited availability of large datasets, particularly for disease-specific groups such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD), constrains the generalizability of deep l

Neural propensity for trait rumination in adolescents: A cross-sectional study with Voxel-Based Morphometry.

Rumination is a transdiagnostic risk factor among adolescents for developing psychopathology. Despite prior research on the neuroscience of rumination in adults, more research is needed regarding the underlying structural neural correlates associated with adolescent rumination. This study analyzed the neural correlates of trait rumination among adolescents (N = 95) using Voxel-Based Morphometry. We found higher trait rumination was associated with lower gray matter density in the left orbitofrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, dorsolateral prefrontal gyrus, and bilateral temporal gyrus, whi

Online Indicators of Written Production: 'Bio-Behavioural' Markers of Dyslexia-Dysorthographia?

Dyslexia-dysorthographia is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which the symptoms appear during the person's development (generally around the age of 7 or 8) and persist throughout life. The study of this written language disorder mainly focuses on children, principally in the clinical, cognitive science and neuroscience fields. The importance and originality of this study are that it investigates the impact of dyslexia-dysorthographia on written production in young adults (students) with dyslexia, from a psycholinguistic perspective. To do this, students and matched-control individuals were ask

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the LTPJ shifts the agent's behaviors in repeated hold-up game.

The Hold-up problem is very common in transactions with specific investment in incomplete contractual relationships, which is affected by human trusting, cooperative, altruistic behavior. Recent neuroscience studies have shown that TPJ plays an important role in social cognition and prosocial decision-making. However, most of the studies have focused on RTPJ in the right hemisphere, while few studies have focused on LTPJ in the left hemisphere. The purpose of this study is to modulate the excitability of LTPJ through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and to explore the effects of

Linking psychoanalysis with neuroscience: the concept of ego.

Through his whole life Marc Jeannerod was fascinated by Freud's thinking. His interest in Freud is witnessed by several of his writings in which he expresses interest in building a bridge between psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience. Following Jeannerod's ideas we discuss here a fundamental point of Freud's construction, the concept of ego, from a neurophysiological point of view. We maintain that, in order both to act coherently and to have a basic, first person, understanding of the behavior of others, it is necessary to posit the existence of a neurophysiological "motor" ego similar to…

[Visual perception deficits of cortical origin].

This work comprises of a literature review on visual perception distortions that have their origin in structural or functional irregularities of the brain, resulting in the cortex malfunction. The main area that we pay attention to is the brain cortex, but we should not forget, that diseases destructive to the lower brain structures also inevitably lead to secondary dysfunction of the cortex, and thus they have also been included in this paper. Cerebral vision disorders are a small percentage of caseload in either neurology or ophthalmology practice, yet they certainly are interesting for the

Visual phenomenal consciousness: a neurological guided tour.

The scientific study of the cerebral substrate of consciousness has been marked by significant recent achievements, resulting partially from an interaction between the exploration of cognition in both brain-damaged patients and healthy subjects. Several neuropsychological syndromes contain marked dissociations that permit the identification of principles related to the neurophysiology of consciousness. The generality of these principles can then be evaluated in healthy subjects using a combination of experimental psychology paradigms, and functional brain-imaging tools. In this chapter, I revi

Inhibition in schizophrenia: association with auditory hallucinations.

The study investigated whether auditory hallucinations (AH) in schizophrenia are linked to a deficit in inhibition. Two tasks assessing the intentional suppression of cognitive events-the Hayling Sentence Completion Test (HSCT) [Neuropsychologia 34 (1996) 263] and the Inhibition of Currently Irrelevant Memories Task (ICIM) [Nature Neuroscience 2 (1999) 677]-were administered to 42 patients with schizophrenia and 24 normal controls. Presence and severity of symptoms in the patient group were examined using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Patients performed significantly worse

One brain, one mind: A joint EPA-EAN leadership perspective on brain health.

Neurology and psychiatry have operated as separate disciplines for over a century, yet this division reflects historical and institutional developments rather than the underlying biology of the brain. Contemporary neuroscience shows that brain and mental health disorders share genetic susceptibilities, inflammatory and metabolic pathways, environmental and social risk factors, and clinical features that cross diagnostic boundaries. Cognitive, emotional, sensory, and motor symptoms regularly appear across both neurological and psychiatric populations, and conditions such as seizures, psychosis,

Rethinking Functional Outcome Measures: The Development of a Novel Upper Limb Token Transfer Test to Assess Basal Ganglia Dysfunction.

The basal ganglia are implicated in a wide range of motor, cognitive and behavioral activities required for normal function. This region is predominantly affected in Huntington's disease (HD), meaning that functional ability progressively worsens. However, functional outcome measures for HD, particularly those for the upper limb, are limited meaning there is an imperative for well-defined, quantitative measures. Here we describe the development and evaluation of the Moneybox test (MBT). This novel, functional upper limb assessment was developed in accordance with translational neuroscience and

Meta-connectomics: human brain network and connectivity meta-analyses.

Abnormal brain connectivity or network dysfunction has been suggested as a paradigm to understand several psychiatric disorders. We here review the use of novel meta-analytic approaches in neuroscience that go beyond a summary description of existing results by applying network analysis methods to previously published studies and/or publicly accessible databases. We define this strategy of combining connectivity with other brain characteristics as 'meta-connectomics'. For example, we show how network analysis of task-based neuroimaging studies has been used to infer functional co-activation fr

Quantifying motor-cognitive reserve using a novel multi-modal stress test.

Reserve is a physiological capacity used under demanding situations. The concept was developed to account for the discrepancy between pathology and clinical manifestation. In neuroscience, motor, brain and cognitive reserves are abstract measures, conceptually defined yet elusive to quantify. Reserve is indirectly assessed using proxies such as years of education and brain volume, limiting its utility. Moreover, the dichotomy in definitions of cognitive and motor reserves is artificial, as daily function requires an intricate network of connections between these domains. Here, we assessed the

From multisensory integration to synaesthesia: a boundary-preserving continuum and research framework.

Synaesthesia is commonly defined as an involuntary and consistent phenomenon in which stimulation in one sensory or cognitive domain elicits an additional experience in another domain. Yet definitions derived from perceptual psychology, neuroscience, aesthetics, cultural anthropology, and artistic practice often speak past one another. This article proposes a boundary-preserving conceptual review that uses the evolutionary history of sensing as a meta-theoretical platform for dialogue among these definitions. It makes four contributions. First, it clarifies the boundaries among congenital or d

Sleep and circadian regulation of DNA repair and retrotransposons in neuronal genome stability and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms.

Sleep and wake are fundamental brain states that coordinate diverse physiological processes required for long-term health and survival. Recent research in molecular neuroscience and chronobiology has begun to clarify how sleep-wake cycles and circadian timing intersect with genomic maintenance mechanisms in the nervous system. In this Review, we summarize current evidence that sleep and circadian rhythms temporally regulate neuronal genome stability, with a particular focus on how they modulate neuronal retrotransposon activity. We discuss circadian clock-dependent regulation of DNA repair pat

Sleep fragmentation, impaired glymphatic clearance, and long-term cognitive impairment after critical illness.

Sleep disruption is nearly universal during critical illness and is increasingly linked to long-term cognitive impairment among intensive care unit survivors. Advances in neuroscience have highlighted the glymphatic system - a brain-wide perivascular network that clears metabolic waste such as β-amyloid and phosphorylated tau - as a plausible mechanism connecting sleep disturbance to adverse neurocognitive outcomes. Glymphatic transport is highly state-dependent, functioning optimally during slow-wave sleep and diminishing with wakefulness or fragmented sleep. This invited review synthesizes p

Parvalbumin interneurons in Alzheimer's disease: Physiological insights and pathophysiological mechanisms.

Fast-spiking parvalbumin-positive (PV+) interneurons, a specialized class of inhibitory neurons, possess unique morphological and functional properties that govern spatiotemporal precision in local microcircuits, large-scale network synchronization, and memory-related computations. Since their initial identification in the late 19th century, technological innovations in cellular neuroscience have progressively elucidated the multifaceted roles of these neurons. In this review, we first delineate the embryonic origins and developmental trajectory of PV+ interneurons, emphasizing their unique pr
