Music interventions in 132 healthy older adults enhance cerebellar grey matter and auditory working memory, despite general brain atrophy.

Normal aging is associated with brain atrophy and cognitive decline. Working memory, involved in cognitive functioning and daily living, is … d become a major policy priority in the framework of healthy aging, to promote brain plasticity and cognitive reserve, through stimulating group interventions such as music-making and active listening.

Birth weight is associated with brain tissue volumes seven decades later but not with MRI markers of brain ageing.

Birth weight, an indicator of fetal growth, is associated with cognitive outcomes in early life (which are predictive of cognitive ability in later life) and risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disease across the life course. Brain health in older age, indexed by MRI features, is associated with cognitive performance, but little is known about how variation in normal birth weight impacts on brain structure in later life. In a community dwelling cohort of participants in their early seventies we tested the hypothesis that birth weight is associated with the following MRI features: total brain

Imaging Cerebral Glucose Metabolism during Dual-Task Walking in Patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gait impairment is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Natural walking involves more cognitive demand than treadmill walking or in-laboratory walking tests because patients have to actively work on navigation and top-down cognitive control which taxes cognitive reserve in the prefrontal cortex. To mimic the prefrontal engagement occurring with natural walking in a controlled and safe environment, dual-task (DT) treadmill walking has been developed. In this study, we tested the feasibility of imaging DT walking-related changes in brain glucose metabolism in patients …

Mediation of changes in anxiety and depression during treatment of social phobia.

To investigate the interactive process of changes in social anxiety and depression during treatment, the authors assessed weekly symptoms in 66 adult outpatients with social phobia (social anxiety disorder) who participated in cognitive- behavioral group therapy. Multilevel mediational analyses revealed that improvements in social anxiety mediated 91% of the improvements in depression over time. Conversely, decreases in depression only accounted for 6% of the decreases in social anxiety over time. Changes in social anxiety fully mediated changes in depression during the course of treatment. Explaining tip-of-the-tongue experiences in older adults: The role of brain-based and cardiorespiratory fitness factors.

Cognitive decline associated with healthy ageing is multifactorial: brain-based and lifestyle factors uniquely and jointly contribute to distinct neurocognitive trajectories of ageing. To evaluate existing models of neurocognitive ageing such as compensation, maintenance, or reserve, we explore how various known brain-based and cardiorespiratory fitness factors intersect to better understand cognitive decline. In a pre-registered study (https://osf.io/6fqg7), we tested 73 healthy older adults aged 60-81 (M = 65.51, SD = 4.94) and collected neuroimaging (functional, structural, and perfusion MR

Veteran-informed design considerations for telehealth cognitive rehabilitation in substance use disorder care.

Veterans with substance use disorder frequently experience cognitive difficulties that interfere with treatment engagement and everyday functioning. When designing telehealth-delivered research involving cognitively demanding interventions, study procedures and intervention materials must align with veterans' cognitive needs and contexts. This brief report describes how veteran-informed preparatory design work can be conducted to inform research procedures for feasibility and acceptability testing of a telehealth-delivered cognitive rehabilitation intervention within a Veteran Affairs health c

Rhinal and hippocampal event-related potentials as epileptogenic zone markers in the pre-surgical evaluation of temporal epilepsies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs) allow for lateralization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) to estimate the reserve of memory in the contralateral non-epileptogenic hemisphere, and to investigate the prognosis of temporal lobe seizure control in unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). OBJECTIVE: To define the accuracy of cognitive evoked anterior mesial temporal lobe (AMTL-N400) and P600 potentials in detecting the epileptogenic zone in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and second, to evaluate the possibility of using them as markers of cognitive outcome. METHODS: The systemat

Abnormal brain activation on functional MRI in cognitively asymptomatic HIV patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A previous fMRI study demonstrated increased brain activation during working memory tasks in patients with HIV with mild dementia. The current study aims to determine whether patients who are HIV-1 positive and have normal cognitive function also show increased brain activation on fMRI. METHODS: Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI was performed in 10 patients with HIV (CD <500) and 10 age-, sex-, education-, and handedness-matched seronegative subjects. Each subject performed a battery of neuropsychological tests and fMRI with three tasks (0-back, 1-back, and

Subjective cognitive concerns and global metacognitive bias in prodromal Parkinson's and Parkinson's disease without cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective cognitive decline is common in persons with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) and prodromal PD (proPD) and predicts objective cognitive decline. Subjective concerns may reflect enhanced sensitivity to cognitive changes or negative global metacognitive biases (general underconfidence, not task specific) related to depression or anxiety. We evaluated the presence and predictors of metacognitive awareness, the self-assessment of one's cognitive abilities, in PwPD and proPD. METHOD: Data from 468 PwPD, 817 proPD, and 75 healthy control adults were drawn from the Parkinson's Progres

Degree of self-certainty is related to the association between cognitive flexibility and anxiety following breast cancer treatments.

OBJECTIVE: Executive functioning difficulties-notably cognitive flexibility-are frequent following breast cancer (BC) treatment. Conflicting findings suggest that factors beyond anticancer treatments contribute to these changes. Anxiety and self-representation modifications are potential contributors. We explored the relationships among self-representations, anxiety, and cognitive flexibility in women with nonmetastatic BC compared with healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: We compared 54 BC patients to 47 HCs. We collected questionnaire data on self-representations (Questionnaire of Self-Represent

Impact of exercise on cognitive efficiency in older adults with subjective memory complaints: a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrovascular dysfunction may contribute to cognitive impairment in older adults. Exercise is recommended for preventing cerebrovascular health and cognition; however, it remains unclear whether cognitive changes are related to changes in cerebrovascular function. Thus, this study aimed to examine whether exercise-induced changes in cognition and subjective memory complaints are associated with changes in cerebral blood velocity. METHODS: This study is a randomized controlled trial that included 72 sedentary older adults with memory complaints (age = 62 ± 7, 19 [26%♂]). Partic

Baseline white matter hyperintensities affect the course of cognitive function after small vessel disease-related stroke: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cognitive impairment is a common sequel of recent small subcortical infarction (RSSI) and might be negatively affected by preexisting cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). We investigated whether the course of cognitive function in patients with RSSI is influenced by the severity of white matter hyperintensities (WMH), an important imaging feature of SVD. METHODS: Patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-proven single RSSI were tested neuropsychologically concerning global cognition, processing speed, attention, and set-shifting. Deep and periventricular WMH sever
