Spatiotemporal SEIQR Epidemic Modeling with Optimal Control for Vaccination, Treatment, and Social Measures.

This paper introduces a spatiotemporal SEIQR epidemic model governed by a system of reaction-diffusion partial differential equations that incorporates optimal control strategies. The model captures the transmission dynamics of an infectious disease across space and time. The model incorporates the quarantined compartment Q as part of the epidemic structure. It also includes three time-dependent control variables representing vaccination, treatment of quarantined individuals, and non-pharmaceutical interventions that reduce transmission. The study has four main objectives: (i) to prove the exi

New generation of oral mucosal vaccines targeting dendritic cells.

As most infectious organisms gain entry at mucosal surfaces, there is a great deal of interest in developing vaccines that elicit effective mucosal immune responses against pathogen challenge. Targeted vaccination is one of the most effective methods available to prevent and control infectious diseases. Mucosal vaccines can offer lower costs, better accessibility, needle free delivery, and a higher capacity for mass immunizations during pandemics. Both local mucosal immunity and robust systemic responses can be achieved through mucosal vaccination. Recent progress in understanding the molecula

A survey of hospitals managing human rabies cases in India.

A survey of 23 infectious diseases (ID) hospitals/ID wards of general hospitals was done during 2008-09 to assess the facilities for and management of rabies patients. All were Government hospitals and 0.5% of total beds was earmarked for rabies cases. The hospitals were mostly run by medical colleges (47.8%) and ID hospitals (30.4%) and located outside city limits (52.2%). The patients were admitted to 'rooms (39.1%)' and 'wards (43.5%)'. The general conditions of rabies sections i.e. sanitation and linen (65%), space and toilet (52% and 56%) and bed (47.8%) require improvements. There is a n

Risks and prevention of nosocomial transmission of rare zoonotic diseases.

Americans are increasingly exposed to exotic zoonotic diseases through travel, contact with exotic pets, occupational exposure, and leisure pursuits. Appropriate isolation precautions are required to prevent nosocomial transmission of rare zoonotic diseases for which person-to-person transmission has been documented. This minireview provides guidelines for the isolation of patients and management of staff exposed to the following infectious diseases with documented person-to-person transmission: Andes hantavirus disease, anthrax, B virus infection, hemorrhagic fevers (due to Ebola, Marburg, La

Effect of containment strategies for respiratory diseases on infections imported via international travel to the USA: a modelling study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine outcomes from respiratory pathogens containment strategies focused on international travellers. DESIGN: We developed a compartmental model generalisable to respiratory infectious diseases, in which international travellers interact with each other and airline/airport workers during transit. We used SARS-CoV-2 Omicron surge data (basic reproduction number (R0): 9.5) as a case example and performed sensitivity and scenario analyses, including varying the R0 for different respiratory pathogens. SETTINGS: A US high-volume airport. PARTICIPANTS: Simulated international tra

International Biological Reference Preparations for Epidemic Infectious Diseases.

Recent years have seen unprecedented investment in research and development for countermeasures for high-threat pathogens, including specific and ambitious objectives for development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. The inadequate availability of biological reference materials for these pathogens poses a genuine obstacle in pursuit of these objectives, and the lack of a comprehensive and equitable framework for developing reference materials is a weakness. We outline the need for internationally standardized biological materials for high-threat pathogens as a core element of global

Infections in patients with multiple sclerosis: Implications for disease-modifying therapy.

Patients with multiple sclerosis have an increased risk of infections compared to the general population. The increased risk has been described for decades and is not alone attributed to the use of disease-modifying drugs, but secondary to the disability. The introduction of more potent immunomodulatory drugs may cause an additional challenge, and depending on the mechanism of action, a treatment-induced increased risk of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infections is observed. The choice of treatment in the individual patient with infections and multiple sclerosis must be guided by the d

Nobel prize for the artemisinin and ivermectin discoveries: a great boost towards elimination of the global infectious diseases of poverty.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) made a marked transformation for neglected and vulnerable communities in the developing countries from the start, but infectious diseases of poverty (IDoPs) continue to inflict a disproportionate global public health burden with associated consequences, thereby contributing to the vicious cycle of poverty and inequity. However, the effectiveness and large-scale coverage of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) have revolutionized malaria treatment just as the control of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis have benefitted from harnessing the broa

Biosecurity strategies for conserving valuable livestock genetic resources.

The foot and mouth disease (FMD) epidemic in the UK in 2001 highlighted the threat of infectious diseases to rare and valuable livestock and stimulated a renewed interest in biosecurity and conservation. However, not all diseases resemble FMD: their transmission routes and pathological effects vary greatly, so biosecurity strategies must take this into account. Realism is also needed as to which diseases to exclude and which will have to be tolerated. The aim should be to minimise disease generally and to exclude those diseases that threaten the existence of livestock or preclude their nationa

Estimating vaccine coverage by using computer algebra.

The approach of N Gay for estimating the coverage of a multivalent vaccine from antibody prevalence data in certain age cohorts is complemented by using computer aided elimination theory of variables. Hereby, Gay's usage of numerical approximation can be replaced by exact formulae which are surprisingly nice, too.

Impact of national immunization schedule on vaccine preventable diseases: a hospital based study.

An analysis of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) in two block years, i.e., 1972-1975 and 1986-1989 showed an overall decline in morbidity and mortality. Improvement in morbidity was most noticeable in typhoid fever followed by polio and tetanus. However, in tuberculosis and measles with compilations, there was a significant increase in admission rates 3.8 vs 4.4% and 1.8 vs 2.2%, respectively. Mortality in vaccine preventable diseases except polio has declined significantly.

Addressing the Challenge of Potentially Hazardous Elements in the Reduction of Hypertension, Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease in the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Environmental surveys have characterized trace elements such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) as potential risk factors for non-communicable diseases. There have been few studies conducted in the Caribbean region to explore, define or clarify such findings locally. Furthermore, local pollution control efforts are often juxtaposed against more seemingly immediate economic concerns in poor communities. OBJECTIVES: The present commentary is a call to action for the evaluation of potentially hazardous elements as potential risk indicators and/or factors of common noncommuni

Prevalence based epidemiological cancer statistics: a brief assessment from different populations in India.

Modern civilization, urbanization, industrialization, changes in daily life, population growth and ageing all have contributed to epidemiological changes in many diseases, including cancer, in India and other countries. Tobacco has been identified as the most important cause of cancer followed by alcohol consumption, dietary practices, inadequate physical activity, infections due to viruses and sexual behavior. The total number of new cancer cases is increasing rapidly, due to growth in size of the population, and an increase in the proportion of elderly persons, as a result of improved life e

Infection Control in Carceral Facilities.

At the end of 2022, 5.4 million people (1 of every 48 adults) were either in jail, in prison, or on probation/parole in the United States. One in 20 persons in the United States (5%) will be incarcerated during their lifetime. Among those newly admitted to carceral settings, the prevalence of active tuberculosis disease and infections from blood-borne viruses and sexually transmitted pathogens is substantially higher than in community counterparts. Exposure to the carceral setting places residents, employees, and visitors at risk for acquiring communicable diseases, predominately those transmi

[The modern Silk Road spirit leads the "Belt and Road" Initiative to facilitate global tropical disease control programmes].

The modern Silk Road spirit advocating for win-win cooperative partnerships, aligns with the target of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, which provides new opportunities for collaboration on tropical disease control among countries along the "Belt and Road". The modern Silk Road spirit may effectively facilitate tropical disease control programmes and improve disease control concepts and approaches through collaborative research, information sharing, infrastructure development, and joint efforts in pharmaceuticals and vaccine development; however, there are still multiple challenges that require
