Edge seismic phase picking: Model distillation for multimodal early-warning systems.

Seismic monitoring is entering a high data volume, multimodal sensing regime driven by dense sensor deployments, including micro-electro-mechanical systems arrays, large-N (100s-1000s) Nodal arrays, distributed acoustic sensing, and other geophysical instruments. Machine learning models, with appropriate tuning and calibration, are capable of achieving close to expert-level performance in seismic detection and phase picking. The emerging operational challenge is how to scale that machine intelligence across future multimodal sensing networks. Effective incorporation of these capabilities remai

OSI Stack Redesign for Quantum Networks: Requirements, Technologies, Challenges, and Future Directions.

Quantum communication is emerging as a foundation for next-generation networks, offering unprecedented capabilities in security, entanglement-based connectivity, and distributed computation. However, the classical Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, designed for deterministic, error-tolerant systems, is incompatible with quantum phenomena such as decoherence, probabilistic entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem. This paper surveys and redefines the OSI model for quantum networking in the context of 7G systems. We propose a Quantum-Converged OSI stack by extending the classical seven-la

EpiDiP/NanoDiP: a versatile unsupervised machine learning edge computing platform for epigenomic tumour diagnostics.

DNA methylation analysis based on supervised machine learning algorithms with static reference data, allowing diagnostic tumour typing with unprecedented precision, has quickly become a new standard of care. Whereas genome-wide diagnostic methylation profiling is mostly performed on microarrays, an increasing number of institutions additionally employ nanopore sequencing as a faster alternative. In addition, methylation-specific parallel sequencing can generate methylation and genomic copy number data. Given these diverse approaches to methylation profiling, to date, there is no single tool th

A Quality Improvement Campaign Reduces Head and Cervical Spine Imaging in Low-risk Trauma Patients.

INTRODUCTION: While computed tomography (CT) is invaluable for detecting life-threatening injuries in the emergency department (ED), the literature shows increasing use of head CT and cervical spine CT in low-risk trauma patients without a corresponding rise in injuries identified. These low-yield exams expose patients to avoidable radiation, increase costs, and contribute to inefficiencies in already overburdened EDs. In this study we evaluated the impact of a multimodal quality improvement (QI) campaign to reduce the use of head and cervical spine CT in low-risk trauma patients. METHODS: Th

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a heterogeneous disease with numerous abnormal targets and pathways involved in insulin resistance, low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, beta cell dysfunction, and epigenetic factors. Botanical drugs provide a large chemical space that can modify various targets simultaneously. Matricaria aurea (MA, golden chamomile) is a widely used herb in Middle Eastern communities for many ailments, including diabetes mellitus, without any scientific basis to support this tradition. For the first time, this study aimed to investigate the possible antidiabetic activit

Evaluation of incidental adrenal masses at a tertiary referral and trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Incidental adrenal masses are those that are found on imaging performed for any nonadrenal evaluation. Published guidelines define accepted follow-up criteria for incidental adrenal masses; however, adherence to these guidelines and barriers to appropriate follow-up are not well understood. We aimed to describe practice patterns for the discovery, evaluation, and follow-up of incidental adrenal masses. METHODS: Medical records of patients with an incidental adrenal mass underwent retrospective review at a tertiary referral and level-1 trauma center, as well as regional ambulatory

Spatially resolved single cell analysis suggests an APOE NCF1 associated immunosuppressive niche and its prognostic signature in thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid carcinoma (TC) presents a rising global incidence, with a subset of cases progressing aggressively despite standard therapies. The tumor microenvironment (TME), particularly the functional state of CD8⁺ T cells, is crucial in disease progression, yet a systematic, high-resolution understanding of the cellular interactions associated with immune exhaustion and tumor evolution in TC remains limited. METHODS: To address this, we performed an integrated single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analysis of human TC samples. Our approach combined scRNA-seq data processing, cell co

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) heterogeneity poses significant challenges for drug development, identification of individuals at risk, and treatment response prediction. Scientists have leveraged graph theory and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to successfully stratify people with AD. Still, the prognostic value of rs-fMRI graph metrics in AD clinical trials remains unclear. METHODS: We analyzed rs-fMRI from participants in amyloid-lowering clinical trials. Four graph metrics-global efficiency, clustering coefficient, modularity, and shortest path length-

Enabling Scalable Real-Time Sensor Stream Processing Across Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Storage Solutions.

Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Health, and Smart City applications generate continuous data streams that may contain sensitive personal information. Decentralized storage systems such as Solid provide data ownership, access control, and interoperable sharing but offer limited support for real-time stream processing. We present Heimdall, an intermediary analytics service that registers RSP-QL queries over streams stored in Solid Pods to produce query results and reuses existing query executions when supported reuse conditions are satisfied. We evaluate Heimdall against Client-Side Processing a

120-Channel High-Fidelity Optical Multiplexing Using a Minimal Meta-Atom Set.

High-capacity optical multiplexing is crucial for next-generation intelligent information systems, spanning high-speed communications, optical computing, and immersive displays. A fundamental challenge is to maximize the number of independent channels while maintaining high fidelity, compact footprint, and low structural complexity, constraints that severely limit existing diffractive optical elements. Here, we overcome these long-standing trade-offs by introducing a multi-dimensional reconfigurable diffractive neural network (MRDNN) that enables high-capacity, high-fidelity optical multiplexi

Antigen binding triggers long-range conformational changes in monoclonal antibodies.

INTRODUCTION: Antigen binding in monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is traditionally associated with target recognition, but emerging evidence suggests it may also modulate antibody conformation and effector functions. Understanding how antigen engagement impacts the structural organization of therapeutic antibodies and their interaction with immune receptors is essential for optimizing antibody-based therapies. In this study, we investigated, via computational approaches, how antigen engagement alters the structural organization of therapeutic IgG1s and influences their ability to interact with Fcγ

Balloon-assisted endovascular embolization of a subcutaneous penile arteriovenous fistula using a quadruple coaxial system: A case report.

An arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is an abnormal vascular communication that allows blood to shunt directly from an artery to a vein. AVFs may be congenital or acquired, including traumatic or iatrogenic causes. Acquired AVFs typically involve the peripheral vascular system, whereas AVFs arising from the subcutaneous tissue of the penis have not been previously reported. We describe a rare subcutaneous penile AVF that was treated with endovascular therapy in a patient with a history of childhood surgery. The patient was a 49-year-old man with congenital hemophilia A and a history of circumcision

Determining the Optimal Number of MEG Trials: A Machine Learning and Speech Decoding Perspective.

Advancing the knowledge about neural speech mechanisms is critical for developing next-generation, faster brain computer interface to assist in speech communication for the patients with severe neurological conditions (e.g., locked-in syndrome). Among current neuroimaging techniques, Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides direct representation for the large-scale neural dynamics of underlying cognitive processes based on its optimal spatiotemporal resolution. However, the MEG measured neural signals are smaller in magnitude compared to the background noise and hence, MEG usually suffers from a
