Sexual health research often relies on single risk indicators. However multi-variable composites may better capture the underlying construct of risk-taking. Latent Profile Analysis identified subgroups based on condom use consistency, partner numbers, and sex frequency among 605 adolescents. Three profiles were identified for each of grades 8 to 10 (Condom Users, Few Partners, and Risk-Takers) and 4 in grades 11 and 12 (Condom Users, One Partner Two Partners, and Risk-Takers). Inconsistent condom use groups reported more non-condom (and often less effective) birth control use and STD and pregn

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vaginal douching has been hypothesized to increase a woman's risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection … rent STI was 19.4% and 41.5%, respectively. Fifteen percent of the women reported consistent use of condoms with their clients and 8.4% with their regular partners. Vaginal douching was significantly associated with decreased use of condoms (with clients: OR = 0.31; with regular partner(s): OR = 0.22) and increased rate of self-reported STI history (OR = …

BACKGROUND: Condom use is a primary prevention strategy for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Consistent condom use substantially reduces the risk of HIV infection. Similar levels of effectiveness for reducing the risk of other STIs have not been established. Differences in disease-specific infectivity and the number of exposures to an infected partner may explain differences in condom effectiveness.
GOAL: The goal was to examine the impact of differing infectivities and increasing numbers of exposures on theoretical condom effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Alternative female-initiated barrier methods, such as the female condom, are needed among women exchanging street sex to enhance their ability to protect themselves from HIV and STD infection.
OBJECTIVE: To describe predictors of female condom use among 96 women exchanging sex for money and drugs on the streets of New York City.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 113 sex workers received a baseline interview, a demonstration on proper female condom use, and 10 female condoms. A total of 101 sex workers received a followed-up evaluation at 2 weeks, of which 96 were included in data analysis…

Greater access to alternative female-initiated barrier methods, such as the female condom, is needed among women exchanging street sex. This study describes knowledge of and experience with the female condom among 101 women exchanging sex for money and drugs on the streets of New York City, and examines the acceptability of female condom use as an alternative barrier method for HIV/STD prevention among this population. Female condom use among this sample of sex workers was found to be related to having a regular sexual partner, living with someone who is a drug or alcohol abuser, not being hom

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A cross-sectional survey of sexually transmitted disease (STD) patients assessed sexual activity and condom use during the time between STD symptom onset and clinic attendance.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients were asked to report sexual activity and condom use while STD symptoms were present. Medical records were abstracted for diagnoses.
RESULTS: The study population (n = 3025) was predominately African American (75.3%) and male (63.5%), with a mean age of 28.1 years. Sexual activity while experiencing STD symptoms was reported by 39.7% of 2,508 symptomatic patients, 17.2%

Among people who work abroad, sexual activity and therefore the risk of HIV infection appear to be relatively high. Little is known about the factors that influence sexual conduct when staying abroad, separated from their usual social environment. This is why 55 expatriates who had been sexually active in AIDS endemic areas were selected for an in-depth interview from the original sample of 864 Dutch expatriates participating in a study on sexual behaviour and HIV infection. The social and cultural context in which the sexual contacts took place was addressed in these interviews. Qualitative a

Substance use is frequently assumed to be associated with higher levels of sexual risk-taking and lower levels of condom use. An analysis of 668 black, Hispanic and white low-income women at public health and public assistance facilities in Miami show that 19% engaged in risky sexual behavior over the preceding six months, 24% in substance use and 31% in condom use. Overall, substance users are nearly four and one-half times more likely to take sexual risks than nonusers, but are about half as likely to have relied on condoms. When the probability of condom use is considered in the context of …

Low-income African-American women (N = 178) entering health clinics completed surveys assessing perceived barriers to condom use for themselves personally and for African-American women generally. Following the survey, each woman received a demonstration of five barrier contraceptive methods and then rated her preference among those methods. The women perceived relatively few personal barriers to use of the male condom but perceived significantly greater barriers for other African-American women (all p < .0001). The male condom was first choice of the largest percentage of women (45%) and last

Low income, urban, African-American, and Hispanic youth have been identified as a group for which there is concern about the spread of HIV. … d African-American females began their sexual experiences earlier and were less likely to have used condoms or other protection from pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) at first intercourse. Recent levels of condom use also left many Detroit youth unprotected from STDs. Less than half used a condom at least intercourse in the last year with …

To induce abortion in women with intra-uterine foetal death (IUFD), during a two-year period (August 1990 to October 1992), at Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, condom-Foley catheter method (CFCM) with oxytocin, and oxytocin infusion alone were compared. All 25 pregnant women randomly assigned to the CFCM aborted within 24 hr, a 100% success rate with an induction-abortion time interval of 14.6 hr (p < 0.001), whereas among 20 patients who were treated with oxytocin infusion alone, induction failed in all. Repeated induction in the second group resulted in a marked delay of abortion;

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between psychological distress, alcohol, drug and condom use in HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual c … n whose regular sexual partners were HIV-positive men.
CONCLUSION: The risk of vaginal sex without condoms in HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples may be reduced by specific psychological counseling and attention to drug and alcohol use as risk factors. Further research on the effect of employment of HIV-negative women is required.

This is a retrospective analysis of 79 spinal cord injury patients who have had penile implants from one to 14 years. The primary indication for implants was the loss of condom catheter with a small retractile penis. Mean period after injury to when the implants were placed was 8.24 years (range 1-21 years). Mean total length of time the implants have been followed was 7.08 years (1-14 years). Sixty patients responded to our detailed questionnaire and they have been subjected to further analysis: prior to the implant 46 patients (77%) frequently lost their condoms. Fourteen of the patients (23…

In an investigation of risk behaviour among injecting drug users in the North-West of England, information was obtained concerning the sharing of injecting equipment, respondent's sexual partners and the use of condoms. Between six and nine months after the initial contact, 169 respondents (56%) were contacted again. The emphasis in the second phase of the project was on changes, if any, in risk behaviour that had occurred in the intervening period. Significant reductions were found in sharing, mostly in the more indiscriminate use of others' injecting equipment. No reduction was observed in s…

Between January 1, and October 31, 1987, 420 homosexual men who participated in a cohort study of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) completed a questionnaire that examined their sexual practices during the previous six months. Of the subjects, 205 (48.8%) men were HIV-seropositive and 215 (51.2%) men were HIV-seronegative. Although there was an appreciable level of condom usage in both groups, 13.5% of the HIV-seronegative men had engaged in unprotected receptive anal intercourse and 6.3% of the HIV-seropositive men had engaged in unprotected insertive anal intercourse. BACKGROUND: Although many countries have been promoting hormonal contraceptives to prevent unintended pregnancy and condom use to prevent HIV transmission, little is known about how women targeted by these messages have interpreted and internalized them. We describe HIV-positive and negative women's understanding of the benefits of contraception and condoms and their motivations to use them.
METHODS: This is a qualitative sub-study from a clinical trial evaluating the effects of progestin contraception on HIV-positive and negative women aged 18-45 years randomly assigned to depot medroxyproge…

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic chlamydia screening is actively encouraged in English general practices. Based on recent policy changes, Public Health England piloted 3Cs and HIV in 2013-2014, integrating the offer of chlamydia testing with providing condoms, contraceptive information, and HIV testing (referred to as 3Cs and HIV) according to national guidelines.
AIM: To determine young adults' opinions of receiving a broader sexual health offer of 3Cs and HIV at their GP practice.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Qualitative interviews were conducted in a general practice setting in England between March and …
