Time-dependent changes in Bolton-Hunter-labeled 125I-substance P binding in rat spinal cord following unilateral adjuvant-induced peripheral inflammation.

Time-dependent changes in Bolton-Hunter-labeled 125I-substance P binding occurred in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord following unilateral adjuvant-induced inflammation in the hindpaw of the rat. Inflammation was characterized by measures of edema and hyperalgesia. Edema and hyperalgesia were both present 6 h after induction of inflammation. However, by eight days, hyperalgesia had dissipated while edema persisted. Six hours after the induction of inflammation, widespread decreases in Bolton-Hunter-labeled 125I-substance P binding occurred on both sides of the dorsal horn of spinal level L4

Bipolar affective disorder and substance abuse.

Epidemiologic data as well as data from treatment-seeking populations indicate that substance abuse disorders and other psychiatric disorders co-occur more commonly than would be expected by chance. In particular, substance abuse, especially cocaine abuse or dependence and alcoholism, is a far more common phenomenon in the population of patients with bipolar affective disorder than in the general population. National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area data indicate that bipolar affective disorder is the axis I disorder most likely to be associated with some form of substan

Psychiatric disorders in women with bulimia nervosa and their first-degree relatives: effects of comorbid substance dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and comorbid substance dependence often display impulsive behaviors. We assessed Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in their first-degree relatives in order to understand the etiological factors that may contribute to this subtype of BN. METHOD: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methodology to compare the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders among 47 women with BN and 44 non-eating-disordered community control women, and their first-degree relatives (177 and 190, respectively). BN probands were stratified by the presence (n = 20) o

Systemic role of orexin A, substance P, bradykinin, and DABK in severe COVID-19 and 2.5-yr follow-ups: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Orexin A regulates sleep-wake cycles, arousal, and energy homeostasis, linking it to the renin-angiotensin system and substance P. Dysfunction in these pathways occurs in acute and long-term COVID-19, including post-COVID syndrome. METHODS: This observational study analysed plasma orexin A, substance P, bradykinin, and des-Arg9-bradykinin (DABK) in 78 ICU COVID-19 patients, 14 survivors of severe COVID-19 (2.5-yr follow-ups), and 14 healthy controls. RESULTS: During acute COVID-19, bradykinin and substance P were significantly reduced, whereas DABK was elevated compared with heal

Polygenic Risk for Aggression Predicts Adult Substance Use Disorder Diagnoses via Substance Use Offending in Emerging Adulthood and is Moderated by a Family-Centered Intervention.

A substance use offense reflects an encounter with law enforcement and the court system in response to breaking the law which may increase risk for substance use problems later in life. Individuals may also be at risk for substance use offending and substance use problems based on genetic predisposition. We examined a mediation model in which polygenic risk for aggression predicted adult substance use disorder diagnoses (SUD) via substance use offending in emerging adulthood. In addition, we explored for potential attenuation of genetic influences on these outcomes by a family-based interventi

Distribution of substance P-like immunoreactivity in the enteric neurons of the large colon of normal and amitraz-treated ponies: an immunocytochemical study.

The distribution of the putative motor excitatory neurotransmitter, substance P, was studied immunocytochemically in the left dorsal colon of four normal control ponies and three ponies with amitraz-induced impaction colic. Substance P-like immunoreactivity in the control ponies was observed in nerve fibres in all layers of the bowel wall and in the nerve cell bodies of the enteric ganglia. The substance P-like immunoreactivity was clearly more intense in the cell bodies of submucosal ganglia than in those of the myenteric ganglia. The internodal nerve strands of the myenteric plexus were very

[Possibilities for the in vitro evaluation of bioavailability. 5. Compact peroral agents with basic drugs].

Lipophilic, basic drugs can be transported across lipoid-membrane even if the part of the substance being not ionized in the solution is very low. Therefore the resorption model can be used for the control of drugs containing the substances as salts. In the case of 4 substances no differences could be found concerning half transport time between the aqueous solutions and the drugs.

Precipitation and determination of the onset and course of schizophrenia by substance abuse--a retrospective and prospective study of 232 population-based first illness episodes.

Onset and lifetime prevalence of substance abuse were assessed retrospectively using the IRAOS interview in a population-based, controlled sample of 232 first episodes of schizophrenia (ABC sample). Subjects with schizophrenia were twice as likely as controls to have a lifetime history of substance abuse at the age of first admission (alcohol abuse: 23.7 versus 12.3%; drug abuse: 14.2 versus 7.0%). 88% of the patients with drug abuse took cannabis. The sequence of substance abuse and schizophrenia was studied on the timing of abuse onset and illness onset, the latter as based on various defini

Perceived safety and controllability of events: Markers of risk for marijuana use in young adults?

Drawing on constructs from the trauma literature, the current study evaluated perceptions of safety and controllability of events as potential markers of risk for marijuana use. In addition, we characterized these perceptions in relation to individual level substance abuse risk factors (marijuana expectancies, impulsivity, depression, and anxiety), gender, and race. Data were collected via web survey from college students at two northeastern universities (n=228, 82.0% female). Controllability of events (CE) was rated significantly higher by Blacks than Whites. Safety/vulnerability (SV) and CE

[Research advances in neuroinflammatory mechanisms of substance addiction].

Substance addiction is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by compulsive substance use, impaired behavioral control, and high relapse rates. Although mesolimbic dopaminergic reward system dysfunction is a key neurobiological substrate of substance addiction, it cannot fully explain persistent drug craving, addiction-related memory, or compulsive drug-seeking and drug-taking behaviors after abstinence. Repeated exposure to addictive substances can induce oxidative stress, activation of pattern-recognition receptors, increased blood-brain barrier permeability, and gut-brain axis dysregu

Analysis of Relationships between DAT1 Polymorphism Variants, Personality Dimensions, and Anxiety in New Psychoactive Substance (Designer Drug) (NPS) Users.

The use of 'new psychoactive substances' appears to be increasingly common. The aim of this study was to examine biological and personality determinants in individuals who choose to use these substances, which may help in the prevention and treatment of psychoactive substance use disorders. The study group consisted of 374 male volunteers; all were users of 'new psychoactive substances' (NPS). The NPS users were recruited after they had abstained-for at least 3 months-from any substance of abuse in addiction treatment facilities. The NPS patients and the control subjects were examined by a psy

Isolating cognitive and neurologic HIV effects in substance-dependent, confounded cohorts: a pilot study.

Controversy exists as to whether effects of HIV infection can be detected in the cognitive profiles of substance users, with methodological differences in degree of control for confounding factors a major contributor to empirical discrepancies. To address this shortcoming, we conducted a small but well-controlled study aimed at isolating HIV neurocognitive (NC) effects in a group of chronic substance users. Thirty HIV-negative substance users were individually matched to 30 HIV-positive substance users on relevant medical and demographic factors, including reading level and methadone therapy s

Changes in the frequency and pattern of drugs detected among suspected drug users during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey.

From March 13 until May 31, 2020, a complete lockdown in Turkey was planned and implemented by the government of Turkey. The vulnerable population with substance use disorders was affected more than others due to the social isolation measures meant to control the pandemic. This study presents detailed and broad data on drug abuse in suspected cases during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey and compares the frequencies and patterns of drug abuse before and during the pandemic. The samples were screened by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry and liquid chromato
