Testing the Feasibility, User Experiences, and Preliminary Effect of Conversation Cards for Adolescents© For Behavior Change and Collaborative Goal Setting in Primary Care: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Our team developed Conversation Cards for Adolescents© (CCAs), a tool to help adolescents and health care providers (HCPs) communicate and collaboratively set behavior change goals. The objectives of this pilot randomized controlled trial were to test the feasibility, user experience, and preliminary effect of using CCAs with adolescents in primary care, focusing on behavior change and collaborative goal setting among adolescents. From March 2019 to September 2022, adolescents were recruited from the Northeast Community Health Centre (Edmonton, AB). Adolescents were randomized (1:1) to one of

Cooperative herbivory between two important pests of rice.

Normally, when different species of herbivorous arthropods feed on the same plant this leads to fitness-reducing competition. We found this to be different for two of Asia's most destructive rice pests, the brown planthopper and the rice striped stem borer. Both insects directly and indirectly benefit from jointly attacking the same host plant. Double infestation improved host plant quality, particularly for the stemborer because the planthopper fully suppresses caterpillar-induced production of proteinase inhibitors. It also reduced the risk of egg parasitism, due to diminished parasitoid att

[Urgent care: psychiatry].

This text gives advice on how to take a history of present illness, do a mental status examination and come to a correct diagnosis in psychiatric emergencies. Certain syndromes are described that form the most common energency situations: suicidal ideations, agitation, danger to others, confusion, delirium, intoxications and substance withdrawal and stupor. Each situation is described in detail, its prevalance is noted and recommendations are made for appropriate interventions.

Dissecting first-year students' perceptions of health profession groups: potential barriers to interprofessional education.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that health profession students enter interprofessional education (IPE) programs with negative perceptions of health disciplines other than their own, which could serve as possible barriers to engagement with interprofessional principles. Yet, past studies have not fully dissected these perceptions, nor have they examined how these perceptions may contrast with how students view their own future profession. METHODS/FINDINGS: A total of 638 students from six different health profession training programs completed surveys assessing their perceptions/stere

Cooperative breeding in groups of synchronously mating females and evolution of large testes to avoid sperm depletion in african striped mice.

Testis size has been related to the mating system of both vertebrates and invertebrates. These differences are regarded as adaptive responses to sperm competition in promiscuously mating species. However, not all variation in testis size can be explained by sperm competition. Here, we test the hypothesis that the evolution of large testes occurs when synchronously breeding females must be fertilized within a short period of time to avoid reproductive competition among the females. African striped mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio) males of a polygynous population with cooperative breeding and high risk

Criterion validity of informants in the diagnosis of disruptive behavior disorders in children: a preliminary study.

The relative validity of the reports of parents, teachers, and children, and combinations of these informants was assessed using measures of concurrent impairment associated with disruptive behavior disorders as criterion variables in a clinic-referred sample of 177 boys ages 7-12 years. For oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD), the reports from teachers, alone and in combination with parents and children, showed the strongest relations to impairment criteria. The reports of parents and children, alone and in combination, were relatively less valid. For attention-defic

Rationale and design of a multicenter, international and collaborative Coronary Artery Aneurysm Registry (CAAR).

UNLABELLED: Coronary artery aneurysm is defined as a coronary dilation that exceeds the diameter of adjacent segments or the diameter of the patient's largest normal coronary vessel by 1.5×. It is an uncommon disease that has been diagnosed with increasing frequency since the widespread appearance of coronary angiography. The published incidence varies from 1.5% to 5%, suggesting male dominance and a predilection for the right coronary artery. Although several causes have been described, atherosclerosis accounts for ≥50% of coronary aneurysms in adults. Reported complications include thrombosi

Collaborative study to assess the suitability of a candidate International Standard for yellow fever vaccine.

Yellow fever vaccines are routinely assayed by plaque assay. However, the results of these assays are then converted into mouse LD(50) using correlations/conversion factors which, in many cases, were established many years ago. The minimum required potency in WHO Recommendations is 10(3) LD(50)/dose. Thirteen participants from 8 countries participated in a collaborative study whose aim was to assess the suitability of two candidate preparations to serve as an International Standard for yellow fever vaccine. In addition, the study investigated the relationship between the mouse LD(50) test and

Kinematic Coordination and Muscle Synergy Patterns of Grasping During Lower-Limb Locomotion.

Human motor behaviors typically require coordination between lower-limb rhythmic tasks and upper-limb voluntary tasks. This study investigates the synergy strategies of human motion at the joint and muscle levels to explore the control mechanisms of cooperative tasks, such as grasping during walking or running. We designed novel motor experiments and analyzed kinematic characteristics, ipsilateral joint angles and EMG signals. Using principal component analysis on joint angle trajectories and non-negative matrix factorization on 16-muscle activities, we extracted kinematic primitives and muscl

Sex differences in brain functional specialization and interhemispheric cooperation among children with autism spectrum disorders.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) differs substantially between males and females, suggesting that sex-related neurodevelopmental factors are central to ASD pathogenesis. Numerous studies have suggested that abnormal brain specialization patterns and poor regional cooperation contribute to ASD pathogenesis, but relatively little is known about the related sex differences. Therefore, this study examined sex differences in brain functional specialization and cooperation among children with ASD. The autonomy index (AI) and connectivity between functionally homotopic voxels (CFH)

Deciphering competitive interactions in hyaluronic acid-wheat germ gliadin-EGCG ternary nanoparticles: Multi-spectroscopic and computational insights into encapsulation and release.

This study investigated the relationships between intermolecular interactions, physicochemical properties, and EGCG release in ternary nanoparticles assembled from hyaluronic acid (HA), wheat germ gliadin (WGG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Multi-spectroscopic analyses, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations suggested that HA and EGCG interact with WGG through hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, and π-π stacking and may occupy partially overlapping interaction regions. These competitive interactions were associated with composition-dependent changes in particle s

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor systems in the hypothalamus and the brainstem regulate feeding and weight through distinct pathways.

The report by Adriaenssens et al. in JCI Insight 22 May 2023 explored the role and property of the neurons that express glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) in the brainstem and hypothalamus. The chemogenetic activation of the brainstem GIPR neurons and that of the hypothalamic GIPR neurons showed different feeding and behavior responses. The brainstem GIPR neurons projected to the paraventricular hypothalamus and lateral parabrachial nucleus. Fluorescent-labeled, stabilized peptide GIPR agonist (GIPRA), peripherally injected, localized to the area postrema, nucleus tra

A Review of the Mechanical Behavior of Magnesium Alloys in Compression: From Mechanistic Competition to Structural Regulation.

Magnesium alloys that are low density and have a high specific strength are widely utilized as lightweight structural materials. Due to their hexagonal close-packed crystal structure, plastic deformation in magnesium alloys is strongly limited in dislocation slip and mainly accommodated by deformation twinning, which results in distinct mechanical anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry. This paper, centered on mechanism competition and microstructure regulation, systematically reviews the recent progress in the compressive mechanical responses of magnesium alloys. Key results reveal the

Analytic solution of neural network with disordered lateral inhibition.

The replica method has played a key role in analyzing systems with disorder, e.g., the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, and associative neural networks. Here we study the influence of disorder in the lateral inhibition type interactions on the cooperative and uncooperative behavior of recurrent neural networks by using the replica method. Although the interaction between neurons has a dependency on distance, our model can be solved analytically. Bifurcation analysis identifies the boundaries between paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, spin-glass, and localized phases. In the localized phase, the n…

Electronic structure of mercury oligomers and exciplexes: models for long-range/multicenter bonding in phosphorescent transition-metal compounds.

Spectroscopic and bonding properties of Hg(n) oligomers and *Hg(n) exciplexes are determined by rigorous theoretical treatments. Reliable values that agree well with experimental data have been computed for the luminescence energies and other molecular spectroscopic parameters by making a careful selection of theoretical methods and basis sets. The calculations clarified the assignments for several phosphorescence bands in the mercury vapor based on calculated energies and other parameters that quantify the large excited-state distortion in the emitting states. Both the weak ground-state mercu

Interacting biological and electronic neurons generate realistic oscillatory rhythms.

Small assemblies of neurons such as central pattern generators (CPG) are known to express regular oscillatory firing patterns comprising bursts of action potentials. In contrast, individual CPG neurons isolated from the remainder of the network can generate irregular firing patterns. In our study of cooperative behavior in CPGs we developed an analog electronic neuron (EN) that reproduces firing patterns observed in lobster pyloric CPG neurons. Using a tuneable artificial synapse we connected the EN bidirectionally to neurons of this CPG. We found that the periodic bursting oscillation of this…

Methylene-Linked Triazolylidenes as Cooperative Ligands in Manganese-Catalyzed N-Alkylation.

We elucidate the mechanism of the manganese-catalyzed N-alkylation of aniline with benzyl alcohol mediated by a bis(1,2,3-triazolylidene) Mn(I) complex through a combination of experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Activation of the precatalyst by a base leads to the formation of an anionic alkoxo complex featuring a deprotonated methylene bridge, which is identified as the catalytically active species. Notably, the methylene linker exhibits previously unrecognized noninnocent behavior, undergoing reversible deprotonation and participating directly in proton-tr

Victim sensitivity and the accuracy of social judgments.

Recent theorizing on the relation between victim sensitivity and unethical behavior predicts that victim sensitivity is related to an asymmetrical focus on cues associated with untrustworthiness compared to cues associated with trustworthiness. This hypothesis and its consequences for the accuracy of social predictions are investigated in this article. In Study 1, participants rated the trustworthiness of 35 computer-animated faces that differed in their emotional expression. People high in victim sensitivity rated neutral and hostile faces more untrustworthy than people low in victim sensitiv
