Corpus callosum size and diffusion tensor anisotropy in adolescents and adults with schizophrenia.

The corpus callosum has been implicated as a region of dysfunctional connectivity in schizophrenia, but the association between age and callosal pathology is unclear. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) were performed on adults (n=34) and adolescents (n=17) with schizophrenia and adult (n=33) and adolescent (n=15) age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The corpus callosum was manually traced on each participant׳s MRI, and the DTI scan was co-registered to the MRI. The corpus callosum was divided into five anteroposterior segments. Area and anisotropy were calcul…

Disrupted developmental organization of the structural connectome in fetuses with corpus callosum agenesis.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a model disease for disrupted connectivity of the human brain, in which the pathological formation of interhemispheric fibers results in subtle to severe cognitive deficits. Postnatal studies suggest that the characteristic abnormal pathways in this pathology are compensatory structures that emerge via neural plasticity. We challenge this hypothesis and assume a globally different network organization of the structural interconnections already in the fetal acallosal brain. Twenty fetuses with isolated corpus callosum agenesis with or without associated malfor…

Orodental manifestations in cases with partial agenesis of corpus callosum-rare phenomena.

UNLABELLED: This article focuses on the associated signs and symptoms of patients with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. The orodental manifestations of such cases have been given special weightage which will prove to be of great help to oral physician when encountered with such cases. CASE DETAILS: Two siblings, aged 14 and 16 years, reported with a chief complaint of severe crowding of teeth with mouth breathing habit. They were low birth-weight babies and had been born to non-consanguinous parents. The distinguishing features of these children were craniofacial abnormalities, delaye…

Transient lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum in acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria.

Patients with acute uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria have no evident neurologic disorder, vital organ dysfunction, or other sever … aminations found a lesion with restricted water diffusion in the mid-portion of the splenium of the corpus callosum of 4 (40%) of 10 male patients. The four patients who had a splenial lesion initially had evidence of more severe hemolysis and thrombocytopenia than the six patients who had no apparent abnormality. Repeat studies four weeks later found no residua …

Agenesis of the corpus callosum associated with spinal open neural tube defect.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the incidence and clinical implications of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) in spinal open neural tube defects (SONTD). METHODS: All cases of SONTD registered at the Spina Bifida Clinic in King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 1995 and 2010 were retrospectively reviewed, and mid-sagittal MRI of the corpus callosum (CC) area was analyzed in each case. Neurodevelopmental outcome was classified as poor in children with seizures, severe neurodevelopmental impairment, or death. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients (45.8%) with ACC were identified amo…

Structure, integrity, and function of the hypoplastic corpus callosum in spina bifida myelomeningocele.

Although there are many studies of people with complete or partial hypogenesis of the corpus callosum (CC), little is understood about the hypoplastic CC in which all structures are present but thinned. Spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) is a model organism for such studies because many have either a hypogenetic or hypoplastic CC. We used diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) to evaluate the hypoplastic CC in SBM and its relation to interhemispheric functions and intelligence quotient (IQ). Participants were individuals with SBM and an intact or hypoplastic CC (n=28), who were compared to a typ…

Reversible splenial lesion on the corpus callosum in nonfulminant hepatitis A presenting as encephalopathy.

Reversible focal lesions on the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) have been reported in patients with mild encephalitis/encephalopathy caused by various infectious agents, such as influenza, mumps, adenovirus, Varicella zoster, Escherichia coli, Legionella pneumophila, and Staphylococcus aureus. We report a case of a reversible SCC lesion causing reversible encephalopathy in nonfulminant hepatitis A. A 30-year-old healthy male with dysarthria and fever was admitted to our hospital. After admission his mental status became confused, and so we performed electroencephalography (EEG) and magne…

MRI measures of corpus callosum iron and myelin in early Huntington's disease.

Increased iron in subcortical gray matter (GM) structures of patients with Huntington's disease (HD) has been suggested as a causal factor in neuronal degeneration. But how iron content is related to white matter (WM) changes in HD is still unknown. For example, it is not clear whether WM changes share the same physiopathology (i.e. iron accumulation) with GM or whether there is a different mechanism. The present study used MRI to examine iron content in premanifest gene carriers (PreHD, n = 25) and in early HD patients (n = 25) compared with healthy controls (n = 50). 3T MRI acquisitions incl

Atypical meningioma in the posterior fossa associated with colpocephaly and agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Colpocephaly is an abnormal enlargement of the occipital horns, i.e., the posterior or rear portions of the lateral ventricles of the brain, … orders. Brain magnetic resonance (MR) images showed bilateral enlarged occipital horns, agenesis of corpus callosum, and a cerebellar mass in the right cerebellar hemisphere. Right suboccipital craniotomy was performed, and the tumor was resected totally. Pathological study of the surgical specimen showed findings of atypical meningioma, and the postoperative cou …

Morphometry of corpus callosum in Williams syndrome: shape as an index of neural development.

Brain abnormalities in Williams syndrome (WS) have been consistently reported, despite few studies have devoted attention to connectivity between different brain regions in WS. In this study, we evaluated corpus callosum (CC) morphometry: bending angle, length, thickness and curvature of CC using a new shape analysis method in a group of 17 individuals with WS matched with a typically developing group. We used this multimethod approach because we hypothesized that neurodevelopmental abnormalities might result in both volume changes and structure deformation. Overall, we found reduced absolute …

Midbrain and falx in fetuses with absent corpus callosum at 11-13 weeks.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the first trimester diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). METHODS: The midbrain and falx cerebri were examined in stored images of the midsagittal view of the fetal brain at 11(+0)-13(+6) weeks' gestation from 15 fetuses with ACC and 500 normal controls. The midbrain diameter and falx diameter were measured and their ratio was calculated. The values in fetuses with ACC and normal controls were compared. RESULTS: In the control group, the midbrain and falx diameters increased significantly with crown-rump length (CRL) from respective mean values of 5.1 and…

Altered microstructure of white matter except the corpus callosum is independent of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) reflects the maturation of the brain microstructure. Although preterm infants are at significant … analysis was performed in the posterior and anterior limbs of the internal capsule (PLIC and ALIC), corpus callosum (CC), optic radiation, and cerebral peduncle. RESULTS: Preterm infants had significantly decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) in nearly the entire white matter (WM) compared with term infants (p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that FA …

Mobility decline in the elderly relates to lesion accrual in the splenium of the corpus callosum.

In a previous cross-sectional study on baseline data, we demonstrated that the volume of brain white matter hyperintensities (WMH) in the splenium of corpus callosum (SCC) predicted the current mobility function of older persons. The primary aim of this follow-up study was to determine the relation of WMH volume change in SCC (SCC-∆WMH) with change in mobility measures. A secondary aim was to characterize the global and regional progression of WMH. Mobility function and WMH burden were evaluated at baseline and at 2 years in 77 community-dwelling individuals (baseline age, 82 ± 4). Regional WM…

Neurophysiological investigation of congenital mirror movements in a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

We describe a patient with complete agenesis of the corpus callosum and congenital mirror movements in which primary motor cortex (M1) excitability of both hemispheres was assessed with transcranial magnetic stimulation. Voluntary contraction of the index finger was associated with bilateral electromyographic activity in the first dorsal interosseus muscle. Motor-evoked potentials of identical latencies were produced bilaterally after unilateral M1 stimulation. Measures of intracortical inhibition and facilitation were within normal limits bilaterally although a shorter contralateral silent pe…

Morphological and electrical properties of oligodendrocytes in the white matter of the corpus callosum and cerebellum.

In the central nervous system, electrical signals passing along nerve cells are speeded by cells called oligodendrocytes, which wrap the nerve cells with a fatty layer called myelin. This layer is important for rapid information processing, and is often lost in disease, causing mental or physical impairment in multiple sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury. The myelin speeds the information flow in two ways, by decreasing the capacitance of the nerve cell and by increasing its membrane resistance, but little is known about the latter aspect of myelin function. By recording e

Interhemispheric lipoma associated with agenesis of corpus callosum in an infant: case report.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is an anomaly that may occur as isolated or in association with other central nervous system or systemic malformations. We report the case of an infant antenatal diagnosed with ventriculomegaly referred in the postnatal period to our department for imaging evaluation. Ultrasonography showed the absence of the corpus callosum and an interhemispheric lesion highly suggestive for a cerebral lipoma. The diagnosis was confirmed through MRI.

Corpus callosum abnormalities and the controversy about the candidate genes located in 1q44.

Submicroscopic deletions of 1q44-qter cause severe mental retardation, profound growth retardation, microcephaly and corpus callosum hypo/agenesis in most patients. At least 3 intervals in 1q44 have been described as critical regions containing genes leading to corpus callosum abnormalities. In this report we describe a patient with a de novo small interstitial 1q44 deletion of 1,152 kb detected with 44K oligonucleotide array-CGH (44K Agilent Technologies) and a mild phenotype lacking corpus callosum abnormalities. The first deleted oligonucleotide was located at 242.638 Mb (within the ADSS ge…
