A middle-aged man with variable breathing problems and frequent acute attacks, diagnosed as severe bronchial asthma, was given high-dose oral corticosteroid treatment. Owing to the somewhat atypical history, and normal lung function test results despite severe concomitant asthma-like symptoms, the diagnosis was reconsidered. As a new diagnostic work-up showed the presence of a disease of slight to moderate severity, it was decided to taper off the corticosteroid treatment. Within one year the daily dose of prednisolone was decreased from 40 to 7.5 mg without deterioration of the airway symptom

Efficacy of cortisone and cyclophosphamide on the muscle phase of Trichinella spiralis in albino rats, before and after complete encapsulation, was studied by haematoxylin and eosin staining for histopathological changes and by the indirect immunoperoxidase test for the extent of antigen deposition. Measurement of cortisol (F) and cortisone (E) are important to study cortisol metabolism during gestation or in hypertensive patients. We developed a method for simultaneous measurement of F and E based on plasma extraction by dichloromethane, separation by high resolution chromatography and detection at 254 nm. Good correlation between this method and RIA was obtained in measurements of maternal plasma cortisol (r = 0.77). Retention times for F and E were 25 +/- 0.6 and 20 +/- 0.4 min respectively. Local injection of radiopaque medium demonstrated the presence of intracystic fibrous septa in 13 patients with solitary bone cyst. Contrast examination was helpful in predicting the response of solitary bone cysts to treatment by injection of methylprednisolone-acetate (MPA). As the number of septa increased, an increased difficulty in obtaining an equal distribution of MPA inside the cyst and a higher incidence of incomplete healing of the cyst was encountered.
