A bioeconomic performance index for comparison of an experimental intensive aquaponic system with tilapia and tomato versus aquaculture and hydroponics.

This study evaluates the bioeconomic performance index of an experimental intensive aquaponic system (IAS) integrating Nile tilapia (Oreochr … er in the integrated system (P < 0.05). Tomato yield was highest in the hydroponic system; however, crop production in the aquaponic system was achieved without synthetic fertilizers, relying exclusively on recycled aquaculture-derived nutrients. Although the IAS exhibited higher operating costs, mainly due to energy consumption associated with continuous water c …

[Impacts of climate change on the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems: a focus on the impact of interactions between CO2, temperature and water deficit].

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures, as well as changes in water regimes, are major determinants of the functioning and productivity of agroecosystems. Although the individual effects of each of these factors have been extensively studied, their combined action remains poorly understood, despite the fact that these factors interact closely to shape future climate conditions. This article provides a synthesis of current knowledge on the combined impacts of rising CO2, temperatures and water deficiency on crop plants, with a particular focus on wheat. Following a review of the

Aphid-induced Defences in Chilli Affect Preferences of the Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

The sweetpotato whitefly (WF), Bemisia tabaci, is a major pest that damages a wide range of vegetable crops in Malaysia. WF infestation is influenced by a variety of factors, including previous infestation of the host plant by other insect pests. This study investigated the effects of previous infestation of host chilli plants by the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) on the olfactory behavioural response of B. tabaci, using free-choice bioassay with a Y-tube olfactometer. We analysed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by non-infested and M. persicae-infested chilli plants using solid-p

Changes in the bacterial community and composition of fermentation products during ensiling of wilted Italian ryegrass and wilted guinea grass silages.

To gain further insights into temperate and tropical grass ensiling, fermentation products and bacterial communities were examined at both the initial and late stages of ensiling of wilted Italian ryegrass and wilted guinea grass silages. 2,3-Butanediol and ethanol fermentation were observed in wilted Italian ryegrass silage. Enterobacteria such as Rahnella sp. and Enterobacter sp. may have been involved in fermentation; however, alcohol production was intensified after the silage enterobacterial community overwhelmed the pre-ensiled enterobacterial community. Pediococcus spp. appeared in sila

Government extension, social support and farmers' response to climate-adaptive technologies: Insights from a discrete choice experiment.

Climate change poses substantial challenges to agricultural production systems and rural livelihoods. Leveraging agricultural extension programs to promote climate-adaptive technologies is an important pathway to enhancing agricultural resilience and ensuring food security. However, how government extension services, social support mechanisms, and economic incentives jointly shape farmers' preferences for climate-adaptive technologies remains insufficiently understood. Based on survey data from 1,547 farm households in the main maize-producing region of Liaoning Province in China, this study e

Transcriptome-wide modulation by Sargassum vulgare and Acanthophora spicifera extracts results in a prime-triggered plant signalling cascade in tomato and sweet pepper.

Seaweed extracts (SWEs) are becoming integrated into crop production systems due to their multiple beneficial effects including growth promotion and induction of defence mechanisms. However, the comprehensive molecular mechanisms of these effects are yet to be elucidated. The current study investigated the transcriptomic changes induced by SWEs derived from Sargassum vulgare and Acanthophora spicifera on tomato and sweet pepper plants. Tomato and sweet pepper plants were subjected to foliar treatment with alkaline extracts prepared from the above seaweeds. Transcriptome changes in the plants w…

Effect of soil texture and zinc oxide nanoparticles on growth and accumulation of cadmium by wheat: a life cycle study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cadmium (Cd) is getting worldwide attention due to its continuous accumulation in agricultural soils which is due to anthropogenic activities and finally Cd enters in food chain mainly through edible plants. Cadmium free food production on contaminated soils is great challenge which requires some innovative measures for crop production on such soils. The current study evaluated the efficiency of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) (0, 150 and 300 mg/kg) on the growth of wheat in texturally different soils including clay loam (CL), sandy clay loam (SCL), and sandy loam (SL) which were contaminate…

Onions--a global benefit to health.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is botanically included in the Liliaceae and species are found across a wide range of latitudes and altitudes in Europe, Asia, N. America and Africa. World onion production has increased by at least 25% over the past 10 years with current production being around 44 million tonnes making it the second most important horticultural crop after tomatoes. Because of their storage characteristics and durability for shipping, onions have always been traded more widely than most vegetables. Onions are versatile and are often used as an ingredient in many dishes and are accepted b

Climate-mediated upward shift of coffee agroforestry and associated reforestation in Arabica coffee's native range.

Climate change is expected to cause latitudinal and elevational shifts in where crops can grow, with major consequences for land use, rural livelihoods and biodiversity. Shifts in agroforestry systems can be especially transformative, as this alters tree cover. We used semi-structured interviews and vegetation surveys to investigate the patterns, drivers, consequences and future trajectories of an upward shift of Arabica coffee agroforestry within its native range in the Afromontane mountains. We observed a climate-, income- and crop raiding-driven upward shift of coffee production into a nove

Transcription factor MYB8 regulates iron deficiency stress response in Arabidopsis.

Iron (Fe) is a crucial microelement for humans, animals, and plants. Insufficient Fe levels in plants impede growth and diminish photosynthesis, thus decreasing crop production. Notably, approximately one-third of the soil worldwide is alkaline and prone to Fe deficiency. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms underlying Fe absorption and transportation in plants can enhance Fe bioavailability in crops. In this study, the role of the transcription factor MYB8 in plant response to Fe deficiency in Arabidopsis was investigated via reverse genetics. Phenotype analysis revealed that the functiona…

Unintended Consequences of Biomass Markets and Implications for Nitrate Reduction Policy.

Energy crops are considered a promising approach to reduce nitrate (NO3) loss to groundwater and surface water from cropland, but they are costly to adopt and will require biomass market-based payments and/or policy incentives to induce production. We developed a spatially explicit integrated economic and biophysical model to assess the implications of biomass markets at various biomass prices for nitrate loss in the Raccoon River Basin, Iowa. We also examine the cost-effectiveness of alternative policy approaches to achieve nitrate loss reduction, including a nitrate price and/or a corn stove

Hydraulic Activation of Stomata Induced by Hygroscopic Fertilizer Salts Alters Crop Carbon-Water Exchange: Field Evidence From Cereal Crops.

Hydraulic activation of stomata (HAS), driven by hygroscopic salt films on leaf surfaces, can create an additional pathway for water loss beyond conventional stomatal vapour diffusion, yet this process remains largely overlooked in studies of plant-atmosphere interactions. We conducted the first field-based assessment of HAS-related responses following foliar interception of hygroscopic urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) fertilizer, using eddy covariance (EC) data from five cropland sites (2005-2021). During the 10-day period following UAN application, vegetation conductance (Gveg) increased signific

Leaf CO2 response curve fitting method matters: cross-tool assumptions spread photosynthetic parameters and bias leaf-canopy photosynthesis.

An-Ci curves are used to infer Vcmax,25 and J25 for terrestrial biosphere models, but fitting-tool assumptions can alter both parameters; although Vcmax,25 varies more, J25 differences can also shift inferred limitation regimes and thereby affect propagation from leaf to canopy simulations. We compared 11 widely used An-Ci fitting configurations and one optimal model configuration across four C3 crops (soybean, perennial ryegrass, red clover, and winter wheat), ran two complementary sensitivities (one-at-a-time toggles relative to a baseline and variance-based decomposition), and used the resu

The influence of climate change on food production and food safety.

Food security and food safety are two concepts related to food risks. The majority of studies regarding climate change and food risks are related to the security of food provision. The objective of this study was to review the current state of knowledge of the influence of climate change on food production and food safety. The literature search was carried out by specifying each area individually (crops, ranching, fishing, food safety, etc.), including the term "climate change" and other specific factors such as CO2, ozone, biotoxins, mortality, heat, etc.) The increase in carbon dioxide conce

Gene Expression Pattern of Vacuolar-Iron Transporter-Like (VTL) Genes in Hexaploid Wheat during Metal Stress.

Iron is one of the important micronutrients that is required for crop productivity and yield-related traits. To address the Fe homeostasis in crop plants, multiple transporters belonging to the category of major facilitator superfamily are being explored. In this direction, earlier vacuolar iron transporters (VITs) have been reported and characterized functionally to address biofortification in cereal crops. In the present study, the identification and characterization of new members of vacuolar iron transporter-like proteins (VTL) was performed in wheat. Phylogenetic distribution demonstrated

Pesticides as a cause of occupational skin diseases in farmers.

Pesticides are chemical substances used in agricultural production to protect crops against pests. They help to achieve better quality and quantity of crops; however, they also are capable of causing occupational diseases in farmers. Skin is the most exposed organ while spraying the pesticide on fields. Farmers are also exposed to pesticides while mixing, loading the pesticide as well as while cleaning the equipment and disposing of empty containers. Other activities associated with exposure are sowing pesticide-preserved seeds, weeding and harvesting previously sprayed crops. During the first
