Metabolic abnormalities in adult HIV infected population on antiretroviral medication in Malaysia: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: In the current two decades, dyslipidemia and increased blood glucose as metabolic abnormalities are the most common health threats with a high incidence among HIV/AIDS patients on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. Scientific investigations and reports on lipid and glucose disorders among HIV infected communities are inadequate especially in those developing such as Malaysia. This cross-sectional survey was mainly aimed to evaluate the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and associated risk factors among HIV infected population patients on ARV medication. METHODS: In a single refer

Crossover fungal pathogens: the biology and pathogenesis of fungi capable of crossing kingdoms to infect plants and humans.

The outbreak of fungal meningitis associated with contaminated methylprednisolone acetate has thrust the importance of fungal infections into the public consciousness. The predominant pathogen isolated from clinical specimens, Exserohilum rostratum (teleomorph: Setosphaeria rostrata), is a dematiaceous fungus that infects grasses and rarely humans. This outbreak highlights the potential for fungal pathogens to infect both plants and humans. Most crossover or trans-kingdom pathogens are soil saprophytes and include fungi in Ascomycota and Mucormycotina phyla. To establish infection, crossover f

Travel-associated sexually transmitted infections: an observational cross-sectional study of the GeoSentinel surveillance database.

BACKGROUND: Travel is thought to be a risk factor for the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but no multicentre analyses have been done. We aimed to describe the range of diseases and the demographic and geographical factors associated with the acquisition of travel-related STIs through analysis of the data gathered by GeoSentinel travel medicine clinics worldwide. METHODS: We gathered data from ill travellers visiting GeoSentinel clinics worldwide between June 1, 1996, and Nov 30, 2010, and analysed them to identify STIs in three clinical settings: after travel, during tr

Roles of the Maltese cross form in the development of parasitemia and protection against Babesia microti infection in mice.

Babesia microti, a hemoprotozoan parasite of rodents, is also important as a zoonotic agent of human babesiosis. The Maltese cross form, which consists of four masses in an erythrocyte, is characteristic of the developmental stage of B. microti. Monoclonal antibody (MAb) 2-1E, which specifically recognizes the Maltese cross form of B. microti, has been described previously. In the present study, we examined the roles of the Maltese cross form during the infectious course of B. microti in mice. The number of the Maltese cross form increased in the peripheral blood of infected mice prior to the

Pyridinoline, a mature collagen cross-link, in fibrotic livers from Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice.

The amount of pyridinoline, a cross-linking amino acid found in mature collagen, was measured in murine liver for a period of up to 40 weeks following Schistosoma mansoni infection. The pyridinoline level (expressed as pmol per 100 micrograms of liver) markedly increased in the course of murine schistosomiasis, and the number of pyridinoline residues per collagen molecule was also higher in the livers of infected mice than that of control livers. This increase in the extent of intermolecular collagen cross-linking might play a role in the modulation of collagen catabolism as an auxiliary mecha

Capture immunoglobulin M system for rapid diagnosis of La Crosse (California encephalitis) virus infections.

A capture immunoglobulin M (IgM) enzyme immunoassay was developed to diagnose La Crosse virus infections by the detection of specific IgM in acutephase serum specimens. IgM was detected by the capture IgM system in the serum of 24 of 29 (83%) of the patients studied. In comparison, IgM was detected in 19 of 29 (66%) of the patients by an indirect immunofluorescence technique. Specific IgM was detected in 83% (20 of 24) of patient serum specimens by day 3 after the onset of clinical symptoms.

Immunologic diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease: cross-reactions with anaerobic and microaerophilic organisms and infections caused by them.

The hundred twenty-four isolates of anaerobic and microaerophilis organisms were examined with a polyvalent direct immunofluorescent antibody (DFA) reagent directed against Legionella pneumophila, serogroups (SG) I-IV. Three of 53 isolates of Bacteroides fragilis cross-reated with the SG I component of the reagent. Rabbit antisera to three SG I strains of L. pneumophila cross-reacted with these three B. fragilis isolates, and cross-reactivity was not due to preexisting rabbit antibodies; antisera to a fourth SG I strain did not cross-react with these isolates. Indirect fluorescent antibody (IF

Clinical and microbiological characteristics of polymicrobial bloodstream infections in hematologic malignancy patients: a cross-sectional study.

Patients with hematological malignancies experience severe immune dysfunction due to the impact of intensive chemotherapy and the impairment of hematopoietic cells. This condition places them at high risk for infectious complications, including bloodstream infections (BSIs), which are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Polymicrobial bloodstream infections (PBSIs), involving multiple microorganisms, represent a critical clinical condition with high mortality rates in this population. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for poor clinical outcomes associated with PBSI

Implications of immune responses to DENV, JEV, and ZIKV Infections for cross-reactivity and considerations for vaccine evaluation.

Dengue virus (DENV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) are mosquito-borne flaviviruses of global concern, causing illnesses ranging from mild fever to severe neurological or hemorrhagic disease. Antibodies against these viruses exhibit complex cross-reactivity, influencing both neutralization and antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). DENV comprises four serotypes (65-70% sequence identity) with multiple genotypes. Secondary heterologous infections increase the risk of dengue with or without warning signs and severe dengue, largely mediated by pre-existing antibodies from

Bispecific antibodies cross-link and redirect CD8+ T cells to kill cytomegalovirus-infected cells.

Adoptive transfer studies of ex vivo-expanded autologous cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific CD8+ T lymphocytes (CTLs) in immunocompromised hosts demonstrate a central role for viral control, but this therapeutic approach is not generally feasible. We present T cell-redirecting bispecific antibodies (TRBAs) that cross-link CD3ε on CTLs to gH protein on CMV-infected cells, including versions where a single-chain antibody is appended to the carboxyl terminus of the heavy chain of a regular antibody, or where both light and heavy chains have two tandem variable regions in a crossover ordered design.
